Description

Recently, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution calling on the US to end its economic embargo on Cuba. US embargo against the island began in 1960 and it was only loosened in 2000 to allow food and humanitarian goods to be sent to the country. However, it is public knowledge that the Cuban government has consistently called for an end to the sanctions, arguing that the embargo is a failed policy that primarily harms Cubans and hinders the country’s economic development. In addition, the United Nations General Assembly has passed a resolution annually since 1992, that calls for the US to end the economic, commercial, and financial embargo - but unfortunately, the US is simply not willing to change its position on the issue. So what’s next for Cuba and how do they hope to resolve this sensitive political issue?

GUEST: Mr Fakri Rodriguez Pinelo, Cuban Ambassador to South Africa
