“Repent! For the Kingdom of Heaven is near!” These are the words Jesus uses to launch his teaching ministry. The Kingdom of Heaven has been described as the central thesis of Jesus’ teaching, and the Sermon on the Mount as his magnum opus. But what is the Kingdom of God all about? As we prepare for our upcoming series exploring the Sermon on the Mount, I wanted to spend a couple of weeks first exploring the biblical theme of the Kingdom of God. This theme shows up not only in the Sermon on the Mount but flavors all of Jesus’ teachings. If we want to understand who we are and how to live like Jesus, we must understand the Kingdom of God in the way Jesus understood it.
