Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern have officially applied to merge, creating Americas first transcontinental railroad. The proposed combination, supported by thousands of endorsements and shareholder approval, aims to boost competition, benefit customers, employees, and communities. The merger, expected to finalize by early 2027, would combine Union Pacifics western network with Norfolk Southerns eastern access, creating a unified system across 43 states and 100 ports. The merger is expected to bring operational improvements, converting 10,000 existing lanes from interline service to faster single-line service, eliminating 2,400 rail car and container handlings and 60,000 car-miles daily.
