Mr. Jameson’s condition has worsened and his doctor has decided to refer him to a neurosurgeon. Listen to the dialogue and pay your attention how the doctor:

• sympathises with the patient about the continuing pain and the development of weakness in the patient’s right foot


• explains that this weakness is due to the continued pressure on the nerve roots supplying the muscles of his leg


• explains that the pressure is at the level of the disc between the lumbar vertebrae


• explains that he should be referred to a neurosurgeon and why


• reassures the patient about the operation and following treatment


• explains the prognosis if the patient agrees to the operation


• explains the prognosis if the patient doesn’t have the operation


• asks the patient if there are any further points he would like explained.
