Description

Vimbayi Kaziboni, the first African to conduct an Austrian classical philharmonic orchestra, shares his insights on identity, inclusion, and transformation within the world of contemporary classical music. In this interview, recorded ahead of the opening concert of the Wien Modern Festival, Kaziboni reflects on his journey as a conductor and cultural innovator in Vienna — the “Mecca of classical music.”

He speaks about the importance of listening, observing, and inspiring others to rediscover themselves through music, while addressing the challenges of representation and belonging in an increasingly polarized world. After nearly two years living and working in Vienna, Kaziboni discusses the visible impact of his work and his vision for a more inclusive and forward-looking classical music scene.

Vimbayi Kaziboni was interviewed by simon INOU on October 9, 2025 at Wiener Konzerthaus.
