Aran faces a choice. Halt his war mage training and, in the process, give up clues to his past, or abandon Voria. Aran sacrifices everything to follow Voria on a suicidal quest into the one place where even gods fear to tread.
On a bleak world in the deepest darkness lays an object of enormous power, one that could turn the tide of the war against Krox. But Voria isn't the only one seeking the weapon. The great Void Wyrm Khalahk has vowed to hunt Voria and will see her dead, even if it means following her into the Umbral Depths themselves.
All while the dreadlord, Nebiat, makes herself at home on Shaya, binding the souls of its leaders.

Excellent Story
This is a good follow up to the first book. It really takes be back to my Rifts role-playing days.
Four Stars
I love the series. Would have gotten 5 stars but both books were too short.
Whether you love Sci-Fi or Fantasy â Take a Leap of Faith and Dive in to the best read of the year!!
If you have read the first book you know what to expect, well at least you think you have some idea of what to expect, but this one is better.
I have to admit, I picked this up with a little trepidation, I am normally a Mil Sci-Fi fan, or a bit of Space Opera (Star Wars Nut, but love Glynn Stewart, Ryk Brown, Morin, Webb, Buroker, Dalzelle, I can keep going, but there are just too many), and I have read a lot of Chrisâs work in the past too. So I thought what the hell, Space ships, Magic, Spell Rifles, Demi-Gods, Mages â Wow â there is even a kitchen sink in here. Oh, and donât forget the Dragons in Space that can cast magic and tear your ship to pieces at range, before closing and then ripping them a new one with clawsâSo by this stage, most people are re-reading this and going â What theâ.
But the funny thing is, this is totally awesome.
Fox has taken all the best bits from Fantasy DnD and then combined it with a sort of soft Military Sci-Fi, and come up with this exceptional story at the other end that you just have to read to believe, and it is definitely worth reading.
He writes outstanding characters, although, I must admit that some of the characters were left behind a little in this story, but I think that is because there was just so much action, magic, fighting and incredible creatures (not just spell wielding dragons), that after reading a couple of chapters, you kind of have to stop for a while and practice breathing again.
In the 2nd Chronicle, Major Voira and her crew, including Aran, Nara, Crewes and the odd collection of âDimsâ, have all returned from saving the planet Marid, and almost the galaxy, to be met with abuse, and stupidity. Voira is put on trial for a myriad of crimes, and Aran and Nara are put into training, which is actually helpful.
