Publisher's Summary:
Gracie has never felt like this before. One day, she suddenly can't breathe, can't walk, can't anything - and the reason is standing right there in front of her, all tall and weirdly good-looking: A. J.
But it turns out A. J. likes not Gracie but Gracie's beautiful best friend, Sienna. Obviously Gracie is happy for Sienna. Super happy! She helps Sienna compose the best texts, responding to A. J.'s surprisingly funny and appealing texts, just as if she were Sienna. Because Gracie is fine. Always! She's had lots of practice being the sidekick, second best.
It's all good. Well, almost all. She's trying.
Funny and tender, Well, That Was Awkward goes deep into the heart of middle school and finds that even with all the heartbreak, there can be explosions of hope and moments of perfect happiness.

Good middle school book
I liked that it was a book I could relate to. I did not like that it had a slow beginning. I recommend this book to other middle school kids.

BEST EVER

A great book for middle schoolers and up
It can be hard to find books that really fit kids in middle school--not too young but not too mature--but this is a great book for 11-14 year olds and up. It's witty and fun. I appreciate that it deals with a common real life experience of early romance during these grades (a sudden crush and the behind-the-scenes negotiations that often ensue) but also has a poignant family story line that was really touching. I read it in one sitting.

A modern-day take of Cyrano de Bergerac... with tweens!
This modern-day take of Cyrano de Bergerac is so funny and enjoyable with a quick, quirky humor. It begins when Gracie starts noticing A.J. â like, noticing, noticing. But A.J. likes Gracieâs friend Sienna, and Sienna wants Gracie to write texts to him from her because sheâs too nervous to do it herself. A.J. has surprisingly witty replies to her texts, really unlike how he is in person, and Gracie finds sheâs enjoying talking to him. But wait â if sheâs writing on behalf of Sienna, is someone writing on behalf of A.J.? A perfect adventure in mistaken identities, this book kept my interest from first page to last.

Embrace the Awkwardness
I love books that embrace the awkwardness of middle school! I want every single middle schooler to read them to show them that they're not alone. I made an instant connection with Gracie and I very much enjoyed her sense of humor and perspective on life. I could also connect with the things that brought Gracie pain and I loved watching her story unfold. I highly recommend this one.
