At 7am, I was startled by a noise that sounded like what I would do if I found an intruder in my home. The commotion seemed to come from the direction of the National Forest, where my neighbor also lives. Concerned the banks insider, I texted him to ensure everything was okay. It turns out the disturbance was caused by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), who were on a hunt. They had chosen that particular day, November 10—the peak of the rutting season—to deploy five teams of two officers each across 540 acres of the National Forest. They were searching for a wounded buck despite no evidence of its injury, such as hair or blood. Riding ATVs through the area, they ended up shooting at the first movement they spotted in the early morning light.
