What’s the Deal with Cheaters?
Description
Dr. Marie Murphy is a relationship coach with a Ph.D. in the sociology of sexuality. She helps people who are cheating on their partners – or are engaging in anything they think counts as infidelity – to deal with their feelings, clarify what they want, and make decisions about what they’re going to do. A lot of the “advice” that’s out there for people who are cheating on their partners is little more than thinly veiled judgment, but that’s not what Marie provides. She gives you guidance and support that respects the fullness of your humanity, and the complexity of your situation – no matter what you’re doing. Marie also hosts the podcast “Your Secret is Safe with Me.
Here are the talking points that we’ve covered:
- Infidelity does not inherently make someone a bad person.
- Understanding the reasons behind cheating to aid in moving forward.
- Addressing the stigmatized nature of infidelity from a neutral standpoint to avoid blame and regret.
- Disconnect between loving someone as a person and wanting them as a romantic partner.
- Societal pressures leading to marriages or partnerships that lack enthusiasm.
- Infidelity as a response to unmet romantic or intimate needs and as a trial for new relationships.
- Challenging the adage “once a cheater, always a cheater.”
- Diversity within infidelity: serial cheaters vs one-time incidents.
- Motivations behind serial cheating such as discomfort with monogamy or coping mechanisms.
- Understanding personal needs and desires before entering a marital relationship.
