Former Labor leader and Albanese Government Cabinet Minister Bill Shorten is retiring from politics, after 17 years in Parliament.

He told RN Breakfast he's "incredibly grateful" for the outpouring of support, but he says he doesn't want to waste another minute in his current role.

Bill Shorten says he wants to make Australia "a better country" in his new role as Vice Chancellor of the University of Canberra - and  says the "best resource we have is people" with education the best path "from disadvantage to advantage."
