Hillbilly Elegy is based on J.D. Vance's memoir of the same name. The film, which Vanessa Taylor adapted, is about an Appalachian child and his troubled relationship with his two mothers—Amy Adams as his mother and Glenn Close as his grandmother in Hillbily Elegy on Flixtor. Vance was caught between his tough-as-nails, no-nonsense taskmaster grandmother and his drug-addled mother. As he matured into an adult, he tried to win her approval and save his mother. Considering the potential for nuance in these individuals from one of the most colorful regions of the country, Taylor's writing is disappointingly lifeless, but I quickly realized that the Appalachian charm is only the hook.
