Microsoft is now offering free Extended Security Updates, or ESU, to consumer users in the European Economic Area, meaning you can keep getting crucial security updates for another year without needing to enable Windows Backup or pay extra. This follows pushback from consumer groups like Euroconsumers, who argued against the original requirement to use OneDrive. However, this change only applies to consumer users in Europe; elsewhere, you'll still need to enable Windows Backup or pay for continued support. Consumer advocates are pushing for even longer support to protect users from security risks.
