Welcome to 15 minutes in the word with New York Times best-selling author Joy Smire.
00:00:36
On today's program, Joy will be teaching from her series on leashing God's wisdom.
00:00:42
On any given day, there can be multiple decisions, all of them meeting answers.
00:00:47
Whether it's one big decision or many small daily choices, each of us face these dilemmas in life and it can be overwhelming to confront them alone.
00:00:55
But there is hope.
00:00:56
God has the answers, and in this series, Joyce will help teach how to receive God's wisdom and guidance for every single day.
00:01:03
Now here's Joyce with today's series on leashing God's wisdom.
00:01:07
Open up your Bible to Proverbs.
00:01:11
Talking this weekend about making right choices, and it's so important, so so so important, that we understand the the weight of our choices and the weight of our decisions.
00:01:28
In Deuteronomy 3019, the Bible says, "I set before you life and death," which both of those are pretty important subjects.
00:01:35
I don't think he's really talking about breathing versus not breathing.
00:01:39
I think he's talking about having a real life versus walking around breathing, but having a life that's full of all kinds of death and misery.
00:01:50
I said before you life and death, "You choose."
00:01:53
Wow.
00:01:55
I guess that pretty much says it all, and then he says, "Choose life that you and your descendants might live."
00:02:08
You know, it's amazing, all the decisions that we make, and I don't even think we're aware of how many we do make, but because of studying for this, I become a little more aware in the last few days.
00:02:20
This morning was a little bit of a disorganized morning for me.
00:02:25
It was just one of those mornings where not everything went the way I'd like it to go, and a lot of it was just details that I would prefer not to tend to.
00:02:35
Sometimes when we go somewhere different, like being in Canada versus America, there's kind of different things you got to do here, you have different guidelines, and so all of a sudden I found out everything was different,
00:02:46
but nobody told me how different it was going to be, and so I'm trying to figure out the difference over there while I'm getting ready to preach, and so that kind of gets me rattled, you know?
00:02:54
And I could feel myself starting to get a little bit like, "Mmm, how many of you can feel that?"
00:03:01
And here's just what I said to myself, and this is just like, just like a wonderful magic spiritual tonic.
00:03:11
I said, "You know what, Joyce?
00:03:12
It is not going to be wise for you to let yourself get upset and then go out there and try to preach."
00:03:21
And as soon as I said that, everything calms down.
00:03:25
So I think we need to begin to take more responsibility for the anger, the frustration, the upset, the lack of peace that we often have in our lives,
00:03:36
because really you can do something about it.
00:03:40
You have to understand that first.
00:03:43
You can do something about it.
00:03:47
Everybody say, "I can do something about it."
00:03:51
And it's simply by making choices now.
00:03:56
We're going to look at a fair amount of scripture this morning, and I think that's good for us to do that.
00:04:04
Wisdom is in us.
00:04:07
The Bible says in 1 Corinthians that Jesus is made unto us wisdom from God.
00:04:16
So you have wisdom.
00:04:18
It's in you.
00:04:19
The thing I think we need to do is live a little bit deeper.
00:04:23
And there again, that's another kind of real spiritual term.
00:04:27
Yes, the deeper life.
00:04:29
And nobody knows what that is.
00:04:31
Living deeper just simply means that you take the time to go beyond what you think, what you want, and what you feel, and you just go a little bit deeper to see what you're sensing inside,
00:04:48
because that's where wisdom is at.
00:04:50
Wisdom and peace work together.
00:04:53
They're like twins.
00:04:54
When you walk in wisdom, then you're always going to have peace.
00:04:56
So if you don't have peace, it probably means you're not walking in wisdom, not making the best choice.
00:05:01
If any man is in Christ, the Bible says that he's free indeed.
00:05:09
And the Son is set free is free indeed.
00:05:12
And we love the word free.
00:05:14
We love that freedom.
00:05:15
But we also have to understand that freedom comes with responsibility.
00:05:19
In other words, freedom is not free.
00:05:23
Jesus provides it free, but having the freedom to make your own choices and to actually choose life or death and not have God push one or the other off on us is an amazing liberty,
00:05:38
but each one of those choices that we make produce something in our life.
00:05:45
The Bible calls it sewing and reaping.
00:05:49
Don't be foolish.
00:05:50
It says a man will only reap what he says.
00:05:52
So if I sew wisdom, I'm going to reap all the promises of wisdom.
00:05:56
And if I sew foolishness, then I'm going to reap all the rewards of foolishness.
00:06:02
Let's just take a little survey.
00:06:05
How many of you know if I said to you, would it be wise or foolish to sit around all day and feel sorry for yourself, which one would it be?
00:06:15
You guys are going to find out you're really smart.
00:06:17
If somebody offends you and you have a choice of quickly forgiving them and being free from it all day are sitting somewhere and seething inside with anger and hatred,
00:06:39
would it be wise or foolish to forgive?
00:06:44
Say, you're really smart.
00:06:48
If somebody does something and you can either be suspicious or believe the best, would it be wise to be suspicious or believe the best?
00:06:59
You see the thing that has taken me about 40 years to realize, well maybe I got it about somewhere around the 30-year mark, is that all of these things that God tells me that we tend to think are so hard.
00:07:14
It's so hard to forget.
00:07:16
It's just so hard to believe the very best.
00:07:20
It's so hard to not feel sorry for yourself when you get so mistreated in life.
00:07:26
Really those things are not hard.
00:07:28
The thing that's hard is giving into those things because all they do is feed misery.
00:07:35
They're all food for misery.
00:07:37
So if you really want to be happy, which I recommend and you really want to be peaceful, which I recommend, then the best thing to do is go a little bit deeper than what you want,
00:07:50
think and feel and do what you know is right.
00:07:54
Now I want to tell you something.
00:07:57
I want you to remember this every time you do what's right while it still feels wrong, you're growing.
00:08:03
Every time you do what's right while it still feels wrong, you're growing.
00:08:15
Now if you've grown in that area and you can easily do what's right, that's still a good thing, but you're not growing spiritually in that area.
00:08:24
However, there will be another area that God will be happy to show you that you can grow in, which means that choosing the right thing is not going to be easy.
00:08:37
There's a great example in Luke chapter 5 and I'm not going to have us go there, but Luke chapter 5, the first seven verses.
00:08:45
The disciples have been fishing all night and they hadn't caught anything.
00:08:50
Now you just imagine working all night, not one fish.
00:08:55
They pulled into the dock the next morning, they were washing their nets, putting them up.
00:09:00
That was a huge job back then, no electronic equipment.
00:09:03
They're discouraged from getting no fish, tired from being up all night.
00:09:06
They've got all this stuff put away and Jesus gets into the boat and says to them, "God into the deep water and fish some more."
00:09:20
Now he was basically telling them the reason why you didn't get anything is because you're fishing in shallow water.
00:09:27
The shallow water represents shallow living for the Christian.
00:09:31
It represents living in that soulless realm of I want to think, I feel, I want to think, I feel, I want to think, I feel as long as I keep my flesh happy, then I'm happy.
00:09:39
But when he told them to go out into deep water, I love what Peter said.
00:09:44
He said, "Master, we toil all night and we're exhausted."
00:09:47
But on the ground of your word, we will go out and lower the nets again.
00:09:56
That's a huge message.
00:09:58
I can make a four-part series off of Luke 5 because he was saying, "Look, I don't think what you're saying is a good idea.
00:10:06
We've already fished all night and caught nothing.
00:10:09
I don't want to.
00:10:09
I don't feel like it.
00:10:11
But because you said to, "I will."
00:10:15
Let me tell you something, your personal "I will" is one of the strongest things that you have going for you.
00:10:25
When David said, "This is the day the Lord has made I will rejoice and be glad."
00:10:31
I don't think he got up and felt happy that day.
00:10:34
Matter of fact, I think he probably was on the verge of having a lousy day.
00:10:39
He said, "I'm going to make a decision."
00:10:42
Just like I made a decision, I was not going to get frustrated over a few details.
00:10:47
I was able to just say, "I will."
00:10:51
Not.
00:10:51
Let this bug me.
00:10:52
Most of the things that bug us are no big deal anyway.
00:10:56
You deal with them, you go on about your business.
00:10:58
Life is not perfect.
00:10:59
People aren't perfect.
00:11:00
They don't always do the right thing, so get over it.
00:11:04
Amen?
00:11:05
Tell somebody next to you, "Get over it."
00:11:09
You didn't even say it like you meant it.
00:11:14
Don't get lazy on me this morning.
00:11:18
Some of you turned the pose I'd get over and and the rest of you didn't even do it.
00:11:25
You know, if you can't even do what I ask you to do, how are you going to do what God asked to do?
00:11:31
All our lives would change if we just make better choices.
00:11:40
And by the way, when Peter and the disciples went out into the deep water, the Bible says that they caught so many fish that they had to call for their partners and other boats to come and they filled up all the boats and still had an overflowing abundance.
00:11:57
Well, I got the message about 20 years ago from Luke 5 that if I will go beyond what I want, think and feel and I'll live deeper, walking in wisdom, making choices that maybe don't feel good,
00:12:10
but I know or write, I know their wisdom, then I'm going to have my boat full and I'm going to have an overflowing abundance in my life to give to all of you who come and want help.
00:12:22
And the same thing can happen to you.
00:12:28
You can have an overflowing abundance to give to your family.
00:12:32
How you live in front of your children is going to make a huge difference in what they do with their life.
00:12:38
Just taking them to church on Sunday is not enough.
00:12:41
You need to live the life in front of them.
00:12:43
Don't expect somebody else to raise your kids.
00:12:46
Teach them not to inherit your faith but to develop their own.
00:12:54
Proverbs is such a wonderful book and you know, there's 31 chapters in Proverbs.
00:13:01
Well, actually, there's 32 now because I wrote another one about three months ago.
00:13:06
You know, I'm not real domestic.
00:13:10
I'm kind of gave it up a long time ago.
00:13:13
And people say to me, "Do you like to cook?"
00:13:16
I'm like, "No."
00:13:18
Well, you know, a beautiful darling, she loves to cook and she's a real homemaker and she said to me, "One time, do you like to cook when you're home?"
00:13:28
And I said, "No."
00:13:29
Well, because I wrote that book called "Eat the Cookie by the Shoes," which she said they got it mixed up and called it "Eat the Shoes by the Cookie."
00:13:39
Thanks for listening.
00:13:41
James 1.5 encourages us that if we desire wisdom, we need only ask God and it'll be given.
00:13:48
So what are we waiting for?
00:13:50
It begins with trust.
00:13:52
Trusting him opens the door to his leading.
00:13:54
As we make the journey with God and his word, we'll discover that no matter how big or small the issue, he is ready to help guide us.
00:14:02
As we learn to make right choices today, we'll be happier with our tomorrow.
