Young, Latina, and In Politics - A Conversation with Denaee A.
Update: 2021-03-13
Description
On this episode I speak with Denaee Amaya, a local Latina politician. Denaee speaks on her experience of being the youngest in the room, and also people telling her she is too young to run for the position she was. She gives us advice on how to move past that, and go after your dreams no matter what.
Denaee ran for office last year, and shared with us how her campaign took a new approach. She brought in volunteers from the schools and went door to door. Her campaign colors were purple and yellow, purple is the mix of blue and red, she wanted to be a party for the people.
We talk about the lack of representation for the black and brown community in the political world, and how important it is to people from the community represent.
I also asked the question "how does one contact the city if they want to start a program or event". A lot of times trying to organize or start something that involved city permits and permission could be intimidating, and almost impossible to get a hold of the right people you need to talk to. She gives us advice on how to go about contacting the right people.
Denaee has accomplished much already at her young age, and is just starting. I cannot wait to see what she does for the community. Follow Denaee on insta @denaeeamaya
