ביולי 1944 התכנסו בכירי הכלכלנים מ-44 מדינות בעולם במלון בעיירה קטנה בצפון ארה"ב, בחרו בדולר האמריקאי כמטבע הרזרבה העולמי והחליטו על הקמת קרן המטבע הבינ"ל והבנק העולמי.
