This time I give you a list of the top items I think everyone should carry with them as a sound tech for hire.
This week I am keeping on the theme of real life trouble shooting. I ended up short on the number of channels I needed for a headliner and had to fix a channel that wasn't working properly. I explain the situation in detail and how I (we) got around the problem.
This is a walk through of how I set up the live stream concert with my band. With no concerts happening this is one way to keep your skills up and possibly even get yourself some work out of it.
This week I have a chat with Mitchell McCloy about his experience of going from industry arts college right into working for a production company and running his own studio Canadian Daydream. https://www.cdndd.ca/
https://justinmelimusic.com/Here is my interview with Justin Meli, FOH tech for Crown Lands and studio wizard. We talk about getting home from Europe in the Covid outbreak and of coarse some sound tips. We talk about laying out all the channels for the band and his approach to dealing with having a drummer as a lead singer! Every tech out there knows the struggle.
What can you do when you are stuck at home. Here's a couple good websites to do some ear training. First one is the Golden Ears training at moultonlabs.com/full/product01 The next is one musictheory.net This site has lots of stuff. Go to exercises and click through to interval training.
I spoke with Paul Maxwell, owner of Maxwell's Concerts & Events music venue on COVID - 19. We talk about the effects of the virus on a local and global scale when it comes to live music and what it was like for him to have to close his doors until further notice.
Dave and I talk about tube amps vs sims, a history of guitar amp companies, and some more technical stuff about how to understand an Ohm load from amp to speaker.www.angusaudio.com
This week I have Zach Gerber on the show. He owns Skytrack studios and he has done a lot of work with Walk off the Earth since their rise to fame in 2012 as well as many other artists. We discus life on the road and in the studio. What it's really like on a tour bus and how to make it through each show on top. We get into the unique pressures of doing live shows compared to the recording studio and the hard choice of if you could only do one, which would you pick? Check out his wo...
This time I talk about my overall mentality when I comes to dealing with sound as I hear it on each channel strip. Getting the gains set, eq's fixed up and the gates and compressors working to your advantage. This is hard to really explain without hearing or seeing the soundboard but listening in to this episode should help bring my perspective on mixing to the surface.
Things I do on the soundboard to be ready for when the band arrives for sound check. That's about it. I walk through the ways I pre set up each channel strip and bus sends to be ready for a band.
This week I did an interview with Stew Pothier, who is currently the sound tech for Helix. We get into to talking about live recording and how it can give you a better understanding of how to mix live.
When people think about live vs studio work generally people just think about the way you mix. In this episode I talk about time, the pressure, room acoustics, the people, the money, the enjoyment and of coarse feedback! Let me know if you like working live events or recording more?!
I'm kicking off the new year with an episode about the unwritten rules of sound etiquette. These are just a few things off the top of my head that more then less target beginner to mid level bands and techs. Have a listen and find out how to make your sound tech grumpier than they already are!
Noise gates can be a powerful tool if you remember they are always there to use if you need them. I talk about using them to get rid of noise and clean up a drum mix. I also talk about how headphones are useful to me in a live show, either from FOH or at monitors position.
One soundcheck I got burned pretty bad for not checking the squelch setting on a new wireless handheld. Listen in and I'll do my best to explain what squelch is and why you should keep you eye on it before a soundcheck.
Have a listen to what I think about using the pan control while mixing a live concert.Should you do it?
Ryan MacAdam interview part 2, we talk more about safety and how new the production industry is. Go back and listen to part one to learn more about Ryan and about education in the production world.
This is part one of an interview I had the pleasure of doing with Ryan MacAdam. He shares a realistic view on the music industry with some very personal stories about burn out, ongoing education, and safety on the job. With 20 plus years working his ass off he has some really great insight on what it could look like to work as a tech full time. If you are just starting out or a few years in, this is more then worth a listen. This can be a great industry if you are the right person for t...
I explain a couple different ways of setting channel levels on a soundboard and how to set up DCA's in a useful way. What does it mean to mix at unity and why would you need another fader to control what you already have set up? Listen in and find out. www.soundguytips.com
This episode is a quick look inside one of my workdays where a few things were going wrong and how I got things going again. These problems were no a huge thing to fix but if they were things that HAD to work for the client.
Story Time! If you like variety in your work day then maybe being a sound tech is for you. I wanted to tell this story of a 22 hour day I went through which included 3 different work calls, driving over 500km and performing on stage for over 16 000 people. Listen in and see where being a sound tech could take you.
One of the biggest struggles for a sound tech is getting the on stage monitors nice and loud with NO feedback. This episode I go into some detail about how I control feedback, tune monitors for a vocal mic and channel splitting to give you separate controls from FOH for the mains and monitors.
This is another episode of very basic information about what to do before a band arrives for sound check. I talk about some step by step things I do to make sure the soundboard, amp rack, speakers, mics and stage power are all working properly so I am ready for a band. It's better to be looking at it then looking for it! Join in the conversation on the Sound Guy Tips facebook group.
This week I talk about the people aspect of being a solo sound tech for an event with multiple bands. Running a show smoothly by yourself can be tough when you are new to the game. Earning the bands trust is key to being able to do your job at the highest level you can, from prep before the show to how you interact with them from start to finish will make all the difference. Turning up a kick drum in a P.A. is easy but making a band feel like they can trust you when you have never met before ...

There is a lot to talk about and this is as good of a spot as any. If you are listening in to this and are unsure about either of these topics then please listen because you won't be able to do sound without this stuff.
My name is Jonah Kay.
