Description

The Fat Athlete podcast focuses on the experience of larger female athletes and the struggles of finding competitors, the limitations that come with age and size, and feelings that arise from always being under-represented. I also talk about the intersectionality of being female, black, and over 40 and what lessons I have learned about myself, the world, and athletics. This podcast is for big people taking up space in places meant for small people, such as organized sports, gyms, and other competitive athletics. Listen to learn about tips, tools, and resources for making what can sometimes be a harsh and disheartening experience a catalyst for self-advocacy and personal achievement.

In my many ramblings and musings, I give you insight into my struggles to prepare through comp training. I also talk about the fantastic support of my team and friends. I drop a couple F* bombs and get candid about sideline barfing (fair warning). It's a fun ride, for sure!

In this episode of The Fat Athlete, I talk about mental health and the importance of processing dense experiences after particularly tough training. I also touch on my experiences with PTSD and a chronic illness and how past experiences led me to become more self-aware and focus on mental recovery. Finally, I give some resources on the best ways to care for yourself as a fat athlete and provide recommendations for things that can become bothersome if you don't take care of them. **Trigger warning: This episode discusses overtones of trauma and abuse and may be triggering to some audiences.**

In this the first episode of The Fat Athlete, I introduce myself and talk about my current sport, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I get into a recent competition experience that didn't go as planned, and I reflect on what I learned. I discuss the importance of creating space to say "no" even when you feel like that decision is too far out of reach and reflect on what I could have done differently to help myself. Finally, I give some sage advice on how to advocate for yourself even when you feel like you should accept a situation that you feel like you may have perpetuated and how what you perceive to be true may not always be accurate.
