Description

My name is Scot Storey, and I created this podcast, “Despite the Limits” to provide short conversations aimed at helping leaders grow professionally and personally.  As a lifelong student of human connection, leadership, and communication, I am passionate about shaping the growth and capabilities of leaders. My personal journey in leadership development has been shaped by a career of service in the US Army’s Special Operations Forces leading numerous teams from just a few operators to organizations several thousand people strong, with the Army’s Rangers, Green Berets and Civil Affairs units in some the world’s most remote and arduous conditions. I believe in the power of a good story to shape personal connections and help people reach their full potential.  That is what this podcast is all about.

Let’s have a conversation!

Send us a text There are three kinds of people you need in your life if you want to grow. Everybody needs a mentor, a peer, and a student if you are to grow to your full potential. This episode was born during my Spring Break travel to the Texas coast to visit my family. The trip gave me time to think about a few of my assignments in the Army. These assignments have stayed in my mind all these years because of the people I was privileged to serve with. Join me while I talk about the i...

Send us a text Episode 2 of Season 2 is the first time I am bringing different voices onto the podcast. I was able to spend some time the studio of the Tracer Burnout podcast with the hosts Dan Baker and Roger Vogel. Their podcast is dedicated to letting veterans share their stories. I was honored to be their guest and share my story of service which they will air at a later date, but afterwards we spent a little time talking about their journey. We had a great conversation and what th...

Cultivating Discipline

2025-01-1020:23

Send us a text This first episode of season 2 comes from a listener suggestion. Bill Emig reached out to me through Facebook and asked me about discipline. Specifically, he asked me about cultivating a life of discipline. This episode is about the two key components to cultivating discipline, habit and identity. I talk about why it is so hard to change bad habits and how to use the habit cycle to change them. I also talk about how to build new habits from scratch. I close out with some...

Do it Now!

2024-12-1809:18

Send us a text The end of 2024 is just around the corner and I had some thoughts to share so here is a bonus episode. In episode 23 I talked about doing an end of year review. This episode explores the concept of New Year’s resolutions and talks about while they are good things, we probably should not wait for the New Year to start incorporating any changes. Let’s continue the conversation! https://www.linkedin.com/in/scot-storey https://www.facebook.com/Scot.Storey.Leadership?mibextid=LQQJ...
Send us a text The end of 2024 is quickly approaching. In episode 23 I talk about how I will incorporate an end of year review into how I am approaching the close of the year. I start with the process that author and speaker, John Maxwell uses and then discuss some of the observation I see from how he does this that I intend to incorporate into my own process. Here is a quick summary of some things to consider as you do your own end of year review. 1.Be deliberate. Schedule specific t...
Send us a text Episode 22 is the final installment in a series of seven episodes exploring practical steps you can take when you feel stuck or simply cannot seem to get started moving toward your dream. In this episode we talk about the importance of celebrating the small incremental victories along the way to our ultimate goal. It is easy to get so focused on the long goal that we forget to reflect about where we have been. I also briefly talk about preventing our celebration of smal...

Send us a text Episode 21 is the sixth in a series of seven episodes exploring practical steps you can take when you feel stuck or simply cannot seem to get started moving toward your dream. In this episode we talk about the importance of embracing failure. This sounds counterintuitive but it really is helpful when you are trying to get something new done or make some adjustments to your ongoing efforts. For review, the six steps are: 1.Overcome Limiting Beliefs 2.Set goals 3.Develo...
Send us a text Episode 20 is the fifth in a series of episodes exploring practical steps you can take when you feel stuck or simply cannot seem to get started moving toward your dream. In this episode I talk about the importance of involving other people, specifically people you know, love and trust, in your plan or dream. These people can inspire you, encourage you, coach and teach you, amplify your efforts, and even – if need be- provide you a gentle push to just get started. Never under e...

Develop A Plan

2024-10-1120:37

Send us a text Episode 19 of Despite the Limits is the fourth in a series of podcasts exploring practical steps you can take when you feel stuck or simply cannot seem to get started moving toward your dream. In this episode I overview the military’s five paragraph operations order as a framework we can use to do step three – “Develop a Plan”. Often, we don’t move forward from goal setting to making a plan because we either don’t know how or we are worried what others may think. A good plan i...

In this episode I talk with more detail about step two – “Setting Goals”. Goal setting can keep us from moving forward in our efforts to succeed for a couple of reasons. An Axe to Grind

2024-08-0914:23

Send us a text This is episode 15. The summer heat had me thinking about a trip my wife and I took to Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula last summer. One memorable part was a kayak trip in Moose Pass, where there is a water wheel with a grindstone and a sign that reads, “Moose Pass is a peaceful little town, if you have an axe to grind, do it here.” I explore how it now appears that society expects us to no longer respect those who disagree with us. What is the impact of this? What can we do? Perhaps ...
Send us a text This is episode 14 and is a continuation of the decision making theme from episode 13 where we talked about choices, decisions, and consequences. In this episode I discuss a way to approach difficult decisions. Not necessarily the way, but a way. Here are three practical steps we can take when facing difficult decisions? (1)Learn the limitations and challenge the constraints (2)Consider what failure might look like before you start (3)Stick to the basics This is the li...
Send us a text Welcome to episode 13 of Despite the Limits. In this episode I talk about choices, decisions, and consequences. This idea came from my reflection of the decision to evacuate from Aransas Pass on the Texas coast to escape the potential impact from Hurricane Beryl. I explore some of the philosophy behind making decisions, why it can be difficult, and why making hard decisions is ultimately good for us. Cascading Failure

2024-06-2817:21

Send us a text In this episode I talk about cascading failure. What is a cascading failure? It is a failure in a system of interconnected parts where the failure of one-part leads to the failure of other parts and grows progressively until a catastrophic event occurs. Unfortunately, I learned about them because I experienced one while parking my camper recently. While no one was hurt it did provide some opportunity to learn, or relearn some leadership lessons. Here is a link to episode 9 of ...
Send us a text I recently had the opportunity to present the commencement address to the Johnston County Virtual Academy Class of 2024. Given only five minutes to share, I determined I could only make one point so I chose to talk about failure. In this episode, I share the message with you as well as share content that didn’t make it to the platform that day. Failure is not your enemy but something worth seeking out in order to learn. Here is a link to episode 7 of Despite the Li...

The Man in the Arena

2024-05-2417:34

Send us a text In this episode, I take a look at President Teddy Roosevelt’s famous quote from his speech, “Citizenship in a Republic” better known as “The Man in the Arena” speech. Today it seems easy to not risk doing something we love or take a risk on a new venture, especially in our divided times. Perhaps considering the words and the life of the United States’ 26th President Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt may help us to take a step forward into the arena. Here is a link to some of hi...

Send us a text In this episode, I talk about the idea of multitasking, which is really task switching. It is interesting to note that our minds have not kept pace with the technology that surrounds us. Understanding this helps us develop strategies to overcome the problem so it doesn't interfere with how we relate to others. Send us a text I visited with the state leadership training for a 14K member charitable organization in Texas on March 2,2023. The message is beneficial to anybody who wants to be a better leader so this episode is shortened version of my talk to them giving you the key points. In 2001, when terrorists attacked the World Trade Center and Pentagon I was thrust into a new job and I absolutely felt overwhelmed by the enormity of the task. Here are a few things I learned then and since. ...

Send us a text Connection is vital to any effort we make to effectively communicate, especially if we want to collaborate. Have you ever wondered why this is? This is the topic I explore in Season 2 Episode 4. It is my initial discussion about communication this season. This need to connect is tied to our biology and is the reason we survived when Neanderthal man did not. If you want to explore this deeper let me recommend the book “Survival of the Friendliest” written by Brian Hare a...
