There is no doubt that this situation of home isolation is extremely difficult for a lot of people. Yet, the way some social media are approaching strategies to help us through this might be making matters worse instead of better. In this special episode of the Imperfect Athlete, I talk about my way of dealing with this situation, my opinion about how we should deal with it, and maybe just a little bit of a different voice to help people deal with their imperfections. In this solo episode, I dive deeper into the neuroscience of mistakes, talking about one particular characteristic of our brains: noise. A concept that at first glance seems a weird blip in evolution turns out to have an important function in helping our brain perform optimally.
Mistakes are not only important to athletes. Coaches make and learn from their mistakes all the time. In this episode, I talk to cross country skiing and rugby coach Geoff Tomlinson about some of the biggest mistakes he made as a coach, and how they have helped him to become the coach he is now.
In this episode, I talk with PhD candidate and co-founder of the Canadian Centre for Mental Health in Sport: Krista van Slingerland. We talk about her career as a varsity basketball player and her work regarding mental health issues in sport.
In this episode, I talk to Team Canada Volleyball player and Olympian Justin Duff about how he got into volleyball, what it is like to be a professional athlete in Europe but mostly, about the mistakes that made him into the player and person he is today.
In this episode, I have a conversation with fellow mental performance consultant Laura Parrott. Together, we try to answer the question: what if an athlete want to be perfect? by talking about perfectionism. This concept is surrounded by a lot of misconception and misuse. Hopefully, by the end of this episode, you understand perfectionism a little bit better and have some tools to help you deal with you mistakes effectively.
In the first proper episode of The Imperfect Athlete Podcast I talk to Derek Watkins, a former national high jumping champion. We discuss what mistakes he made throughout his career and in the end, Derek has some really strong advice for young athletes!
Nobody changes their behaviour after a successful play, win or season. Only when a mistake is made, people tend to change their behaviour. Yet, when we talk about athletes, we mostly talk about their achievements. I want to change that by interviewing athletes, coaches and other support staff and ask them about the biggest mistakes they made in their careers, but most importantly, how those mistakes made them into the person they are today.
