What Allergy Training Do Childcare Workers Actually Get? The Reality Every Parent Should KnowIf you're sending your child to daycare with food allergies, you need to know what training the staff actually receive. The answer might surprise (and concern) you.In this video, I'm pulling back the curtain on the mandatory allergy training requirements for childcare educators in Australia, not to criticise the incredible people working in early childhood education, but because parents deserve to understand the reality. What's actually required (mandatory training):✓ First aid certificate (including CPR)✓ That's it.What that module covers:Basic allergy definitionsAction plans existEpiPens existGeneral emergency principlesWhat's NOT covered:❌ The difference between reactions in young babies & older children❌ Real-time reaction recognition❌ Cross-contact management❌ Label reading for allergens❌ Decision-making with unclear symptoms❌ Communicating with scared parentsThe comparison that matters:Schools have RAMOAP (structured allergy management frameworks). Childcare centers? Not required, even though they care for younger children who can't always communicate symptoms. This is a systemic problem, not an educator problem.Childcare workers are caring professionals doing their best with minimal training. The system is failing them AND our children.I created Beyond Compliance to fill this gap, practical, scenario-based training that gives educators genuine confidence. But more than promoting my course, I want to hear YOUR experiences.💬 Tell me in the comments:Did you know how basic the mandatory training was? What's your childcare experience been?Has your center gone above and beyond? What would make you feel more confident? The more we talk about this openly, the more pressure for change.FREE RESOURCE:Download my Allergy Reaction Cheat Sheet - phone-sized infographic for quick reference🔗 https://thenestcpr.systeme.io/allergy-management-childcareONGOING SUPPORT:The Nest Allergy Membership - for new mums and experienced allergy parents🔗 https://thenestcpr.systeme.io/the-nest-allergy-membershipFOR CHILDCARE CENTERS:Beyond Compliance course information🔗 https://thenestcpr.systeme.io/allergy-management-childcareSUBSCRIBE for honest conversations about food allergies, practical guidance, and evidence-based information.📧 Email: hello@thefirstaidnest.com.au📱 Instagram: @thenestcpr🌐 Website: thefirstaidnest.com.au/thenestcprSUBSCRIBE for weekly evidence-based allergy content, expert interviews, and practical strategies for raising kids with food allergies.#foodallergies #childcare #daycare #allergytraining #foodallergyawareness #allergykids #childsafety #earlychildhoodeducation #allergymanagement #parentawareness
You drop your child off at daycare after their food allergy diagnosis. You’ve provided action plans, EpiPens, gone through everything with staff. You drive away and the anxiety hits: Do they actually know what to do?Here’s the uncomfortable truth: childcare staff probably received less allergy training than you think. In this episode, I’m pulling back the curtain on what allergy training actually looks like in early childhood education - and why “compliance” is not the same as “confident and capable.”What you’ll learn:• The shocking reality of mandatory allergy training for childcare educators (hint: it’s 20-30 minutes online)• What’s NOT covered in basic training (EpiPen practice, real-time decision-making, cross-contact management)• Why schools have RAMOAP but daycares don’t - and what that means for your child• The difference between compliance (having action plans filed) and competence (knowing how to use them in an emergency)• Real-world scenarios educators face daily that they’re not trained for• The emotional reality for childcare staff (they’re terrified of making mistakes but have minimal training)• What educators actually need to feel confident managing allergies• Why I created Beyond Compliance - my course for early childhood educators• How YOU can create a ripple effect that makes childcare safer for all allergic childrenThe big takeaway:You have more power than you think. One conversation with your childcare director can plant a seed. Multiple parents asking about enhanced training? That creates real change.Your challenge this week:Have ONE conversation. With your center director, another allergy parent, or in a parent group. Mention Beyond Compliance. Ask about enhanced allergy training. Start the ripple effect.
Food-Based Cream, Egg & Peanut Connection, Trace Reactions & Allergy vs IntoleranceToday I’m sharing something special, a training that’s normally only available inside The Nest Allergy Membership. I wanted to give you a taste of the kind of evidence-based, practical content our members get access to every month. In this episode, I’m breaking down four topics that come up constantly in my inbox and DMs:Food-based cream for eczemaWhat it is, how it works, whether it’s right for your child, and what the research actually shows about using food proteins topically for skin conditions. The relationship between egg and peanut allergiesWhy these two allergies often occur together, what the data tells usTrace amount reactionsCan your child really react to traces? What does “trace” actually mean? When reactions to small amounts are concerning versus expected, and how to navigate this confusing area.Allergy vs intoleranceThe critical difference between a true food allergy and a food intolerance, why it mattersThese are nuanced topics that don’t have simple yes/no answers. But understanding them helps you make better decisions, ask better questions of your medical team, and feel more confident navigating your child’s food allergies. This is a sample of what Nest members receive:Inside The Nest Allergy Membership, you get access to an extensive library of training videos, expert interviews, Q&A sessions, and practical resources covering everything from allergen introduction to managing diagnosed allergies, social situations, school navigation, travel, meal planning, and so much more.Whether you’re a new mum introducing allergens and have seen a res ton in your child or an experienced allergy parent managing complex food allergies, The Nest provides expert guidance, evidence-based content, practical tools, and supportive community for every stage of your journey.Ready to join us?Learn more about The Nest Allergy Membership here Inside, you’ll get:🪺 Monthly expert training sessions and Q&As🪺 Extensive library of allergy education content🪺 Social situation videos (birthday parties)🪺 Emergency preparedness guides🪺 Private community support from other allergy families🪺 Direct access to me for questions and guidance📧 Email: hello@thefirstaidnest.com📱 Instagram: @thenestcpr🌐 Website: thefirstaidnest.com.au#foodallergies #allergymum #allergyawareness #epipen #foodallergysafety #allergymanagement #pediatricallergies #chronicillness #medicalneeds #allergyparenting #allergycommunity

Introducing common allergens to your baby is one of the most anxiety-inducing parts of starting solids - especially if you're worried about allergies or have a family history. When do you start? How much do you give? What if they have a reaction? When should you push forward with introduction and when should you stop?In this episode, I'm sitting down with Dr. Chai, a paediatric immunologist and allergy specialist, to answer all of your questions about early allergen introduction.Dr. Chai and I worked together for years, and she now has a practice in Leichhardt, Sydney, where she helps families navigate food allergies and allergen introduction every single day. She brings both expert knowledge and practical, real-world guidance that actually works for busy families. What we cover:When to start introducing allergens to your baby (and why timing matters)The common allergens you need to introduce - and whether order mattersHow much is "enough" for allergy prevention (you might be surprised)What mild reactions look like versus when you need to stop immediatelyWhen to push forward with introduction and when to pauseHow family history of allergies changes your approachThe biggest mistakes parents make with allergen introductionWhen you should see a paediatric allergist versus managing at homeDr. Chai's practical tips for parents who feel overwhelmedKey insights from this conversation:✓ Early introduction (around 6 months, when starting solids) is crucial for allergy prevention - not avoiding allergens✓ Consistency matters more than quantity - it's about regular exposure, not large amounts✓ Mild reactions (like a bit of redness around the mouth) don't always mean you need to stop - Dr. Chai explains when to continue and when to pause✓ Family history doesn't mean you avoid allergens - it means you approach them more carefully with expert guidance✓ Trust your parental instinct, but get professional support when you're unsureWhether you're about to start solids, already introducing allergens and feeling uncertain, or dealing with reactions that have you worried - this conversation will give you the expert guidance and confidence you need to move forward.About Dr. Chai: Dr. Chai is a paediatric immunologist and allergy specialist practicing in Leichhardt, Sydney. Your baby was just diagnosed with peanut allergy. You’re terrified. Then someone mentions “oral immunotherapy” and suddenly you have hope. But before you get too excited, I need to be really clear about what OIT is and what it isn’t.In this episode, I’m breaking down the truth about oral immunotherapy - the medical treatment that’s giving families hope, but also creating a lot of confusion and unrealistic expectations. We’re covering:• What OIT actually IS versus what people think it is• How the ADAPT program works for babies under 12 months with peanut allergy• The real commitment required (daily dosing, hospital visits, years of treatment)• Why “safer” doesn’t mean “cured”• Whether OIT might be right for your family• Questions to ask your allergist before starting• Why early intervention shows the best outcomesThe reality: OIT isn’t a magic cure. It’s a medical treatment that gradually introduces tiny amounts of peanut protein under strict supervision to increase tolerance. The goal is moving from “a crumb could be dangerous” to “accidental exposure is less scary.”This is a significant undertaking with real benefits AND real challenges. You need to understand both before making this decision for your family.EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT:I’m offering 10 founding member sponsorships for The Nest Allergy Membership + exclusive early access to Raffy, a new digital tool designed to be a companion for families navigating life with severe food allergies.Raffy provides the kind of organisation and clarity you’d get from a dedicated care coordinator, but available 24/7 at home: digitising manual tracking, eliminating paperwork, and keeping everything in one place so you always know where to find what you need, with step-by-step guidance when emergencies arise.🎯 Who should apply: Families currently doing or planning to start regular dosing of a food allergen who want to help shape tools that support consistent, daily exposure📅 What you get:🪺 Full founding membership access for the first month to The Nest Allergy Membership🪺 1 week pilot program with the Raffy team🪺 Direct input into app developmentApplications open until Tuesday 27th January 11:59pm👉 Learn more and apply: https://raffyallergy.com/waitlistConnect with me:Instagram: @thenestcprWebsite: thefirstaidnest.com.auEmail: hello@thefirstaidnest.comIf this episode helped you understand OIT better, please leave a rating and review - it helps other allergy families find this information!
Food challenges can feel terrifying for allergy parents. The idea of intentionally giving your child a food they’re allergic to, in a controlled environment or not, goes against every protective instinct you have. But food challenges are also one of the most powerful tools in allergy management. They can open up foods your child might tolerate, end years of unnecessary avoidance, and give you definitive answers instead of living in constant uncertainty. In this episode, I break down everything you need to know about pediatric food challenges:• Why allergists recommend them and when they make sense• The complete timeline of what happens during a 5-6 hour hospital food challenge• How to emotionally prepare your child without creating anxiety• What happens if your child has a reaction during the challenge• How to decide if a food challenge is right for your familyWhether you’re considering a food challenge, just got scheduled for one, or want to understand what they’re all about, this episode will help you feel informed and prepared instead of anxious and overwhelmed.FREE RESOURCE:Download my Quick Reference Reaction Guide, your printable decision tree for knowing exactly what to do when you’re not sure if it’s a reaction or how serious it is. In this episode, Heidi Young, paediatric nurse and allergy specialist, shares a powerful observation from her recent time in the UK: food allergy awareness is built into everyday life.Restaurants routinely ask about allergies.Parents don’t have to explain or justify.Children don’t feel like “the problem.”Back in Australia, the experience is very different.Heidi unpacks: • Why food allergy shouldn’t be treated as “rare” • The anxiety families carry into cafés, parties, and social events • How small system changes can dramatically reduce stress and risk • Why inclusion matters for children’s long-term confidence and wellbeingThis episode is for: • Parents of children with food allergies • Healthcare professionals • Educators and venue owners • Anyone wanting to understand what allergy families live with every day🎁 Free Resource:Download the Quick Reference Allergy Kit, a calm, nurse-led guide for recognising and responding to allergic reactions in babies and children 👉🏼 https://thenestcpr.systeme.io/reaction-guide

Have you heard the advice to rub peanut butter or egg on your baby’s skin before feeding it to ‘test’ for allergies? It’s common advice. It’s well-meaning. But it’s wrong and potentially harmful. In this episode of NestPod, I explain why rubbing food on your baby’s skin isn’t just unhelpful, it can actually increase their risk of developing a food allergy. As a paediatric nurse and allergy specialist with 10+ years of experience, I break down:🧴 What actually happens when food touches inflamed or broken skin🧠 Why this method doesn’t tell you if a baby is allergic🚫 How it can lead to sensitisation not prevention✅ What to do instead when introducing allergy foods safely💬 And why your baby’s immune system learns best through their tummy, not their skinIf you’re starting solids soon, or feel completely unsure about how to safely introduce peanut, egg, or other allergens this is a must-listen.▶ Want my free Quick-Reference Allergy Kit for parents?Comment QUICK or download it here: thenestcpr.systeme.io/reaction-guide▶ Need ongoing support?Join The Nest Food Allergy Membership for nurse-led guidance, community, and daily answers you can trust. Babies can’t say “my throat feels funny” or “my tongue is tingling”…so allergic reactions in infants often look completely different from what you see on the ASCIA Action Plan.In this 9-minute episode, I break down the real-life, baby-specific signs and symptoms of allergic reactions, from mild to severe, so you know exactly what to look for, what’s normal, and what needs action. As a paediatric allergy nurse of 25 years, I’ve supported thousands of families through the confusion of food allergies. And one thing I know for sure? Most parents miss early signs… not because they’re careless, but because babies simply can’t communicate what’s happening.Inside this episode, you’ll learn:🤱🏼 How allergic reactions present differently in babies👀 The subtle behavioural changes that often appear before visible symptoms⚠️ What ASCIA’s “mild/moderate” vs “severe” actually look like in a young child🫁 When to watch closely, and when to act fast🍼 Why understanding these signs bring calm and confidenceWhether your baby has reacted before, you’re about to start allergens, or you’re simply feeling overwhelmed by the “what ifs”, this episode will give you clarity you can’t get from Google.▶ Want my free Quick-Reference Allergy Kit for parents?Comment QUICK or download it here: thenestcpr.systeme.io/reaction-guide▶ Need ongoing support?Join The Nest Food Allergy Membership for nurse-led guidance, community, and daily answers you can trust. In this very first episode back after a long break of NestPod, I share the moment that changed everything, the day I saved a six-month-old baby who was choking in a park.As a paediatric nurse and allergy specialist, I thought I’d seen it all. But nothing prepares you for performing choking first aid on a real baby, in front of a panicked parent, knowing every second counts. That experience, followed by a second incident with a 2.5-year-old in Chargrill Charlie’s was the moment I knew something had to change.Parents shouldn’t be relying on luck. They should feel confident, calm, and equipped to handle the worst, even on three hours of sleep. That’s why I started The Nest. It’s why I teach baby first aid. In todays podcast, I talk about my birth story, which was not the smooth journey i hoped for. Blindness, ice cubes, emergency procedures and pre-eclampsia was not on the list of things I expected when it came to having my baby.
Ultimately, we were all well and safe but this did not stop the crippling anxiey I had about leaving the hospital after 8 days and the parental anxiety I work to keep at bay everyday.
Listen to my story and why I started The Nest, Kids CPR & Allergy.
