At the ripe old age of 85 he has spent his career learning from some of the greats in osteopathic medicine. He learned the principles of functional positional release from George Laughlin, D.O. the grandson of AT Still. He learned the muscle energy technique from the founder, Fred Mitchell Sr. In 1968 he took over a prominent osteopathic physician’s practice in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Perrin T. Wilson, D.O.  who treated the Rockefeller family and taught Dr. Stiles HVLA. We thank him for helping to develop the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes for OMT and inspiring the next generation of osteopathic physicians at Pikeville College of Osteopathic medicine. At 85 he continues teaching and treating patients. Thank you for being an example and inspiration of living an osteopathic life. You may reach out to Dr. Stiles at: estiles@Upike.edu https://www.omtsos.com/
A lover of sports, particularly Notre Dame football, jazz music, and fishing. He is the first doctor of his family, finding a home in osteopathic medical school. During his medical school years he became a predoctoral OMM fellow, spending that year learning the principles of OMM and honing his skills. Wanting to make sports an important part of his practice, he set foot down the path toward a career in sports medicine. Now working with athletes of all levels he uses his OMM skills to restore the amplitude of the paired rhythms of the body, improving both gait and breath efficiency. He has spent over a decade mastering MSKUS and speaks about the ultrasound as an extension of the physical exam. He agrees, AT Still if alive today, would be a master of MSKUS. Enjoy my conversation with a champion of osteopathic medicine Dr. Albert Kozar, D.O.
His medical journey began while on a repelling adventure in undergrad, when he helped rescue an injured climber who had fallen 80 ft. Following this experience, he began his medical journey. Having grown up building things and thinking like an engineer, the philosophy and concepts of osteopathy were a natural fit. He was blessed with incredible mentors such as Ed Stiles who taught him the importance of knowing the systems of the body well so as to better understand their influence on the musculoskeletal system. Dr. Stiles taught him Sequencing – the application of osteopathic principles to any part of the body rather than learning a series of techniques. He has learned how to observe, ask proper questions and listen to the whole patient. He says the more you know about how the body works as a unit of movement the more efficacious your treatments will be. Enjoy my conversation with Dr. Charles Beck, D.O. She has done extensive osteopathic pediatric research throughout her career and for this we thank her. She holds a special place for children with Down Syndrome and has learned many a lesson from them. Following a motor vehicle accident in 1988 she received cranial osteopathic treatments. The physician who treated her told her she should learn these osteopathic treatments for her patients. She sat in on medical school OMT classes for two years and since then has been treating her pediatic patients with great success. Enjoy my conversation with a wise soul, a Pediatrician and an incredible M.D. like A.T. Still who is an osteopath at heart.

With a father who was a cardiologist he witnessed the sacrifices, joys and impact of being a physician. He knew before the start of medical school, sports medicine was for him. He was a kinesthetic, hands-on learner. When deciding where to go to medical school he discovered osteopathic medicine and quickly identified with the philosophy. Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine quickly became his favorite class and he took advantage of every opportunity to treat his family and friends. Today he is a sports medicine fellowship director, a USA Track and Field doctor and team physician at a division 1 school. He cannot imagine his practice without OMT.
She is the Founder and CEO of her own business “In Motion Therapy” and Doctor of Physical Therapy. She has a growth mindset and works to motivate her team members to do the same. She values the hands-on approach to patient care and is an expert in pelvic floor therapy. Early on in her career she saw that the bands and clams of common physical therapy treatments were not always helping her patients get better. Coming into contact with Mark Bookhout, PT who introduced her to osteopathic manipulative treatment changed how she both analyzes and treats her patients. Today her business in Duluth, MN is growing and she continues to be “Inspired by others and Inspire those around her”. Enjoy my conversation with Annita Winkels, DPT. Two years into residency she felt like she was on the medical hamster wheel, she was not as satisfied and fulfilled with her profession as she hoped on that first day of medical school. Management was pushing for quicker turnover times in surgery, hurrying her while taking care of patients with delicate health. When it became too much she decided to take her career satisfaction into her own hands, running marathons and taking extracurricular courses in medical acupuncture, integrative medicine and contemplative medicine. Today she owns her own integrative medicine acupuncture practice. Enjoy my conversation with Dr. Julie Schmalz a fellow marathon runner, a courageous person and one who is living life to the fullest. In this lecture style episode we will talk about how the Zink Model as a postural model rooted in tensegrity. How fascia plays a key role in tensegrity. We will learn about how fascia is contractile, aids in tissue gliding, is innervated and may be a pain generator if mechanically strained. There will be a discussion about the girdling effect of the thoracolumbar fascia and how it forms an axial ring between thorax and pelvis. Finally we will end with learning how to diagnose and treat Pelvic Cross Syndrome along with strengthening deep core stabilizers. Email with comments or questions at: onmmpodcast@gmail.com

He is an internist whose heart lies in the philosophy of osteopathy. He reminds us medicine is both art and science. For both him and Dr. Still, osteopathy begins with anatomy. He visualizes the anatomy as he treats the patient, restoring motion and more specifically the blood flow. You must know anatomy to find and help restore health. Throughout his many years of clinical experiences working as an internist and understanding disease processes, he has trained himself to palpate and understand visceral somatic dysfunction. He has a reverence for the patient in front of him, listening and allowing the body to tell him what it needs. He attracts crowds of students during the Evening with the Stars, at the annual convocation so much so that students have asked him to come to teach at their medical school. Enjoy our conversation!   Chris.Stephenson@brown-legacy.com onmmpodcast@gmail.com
He was described by one of his patient’s as compassionate, conscientious, and a caring physician. He worked for 8 years at Swedish Hospital in Seattle, WA but wanted more quality time with his patients. During the COVID pandemic he opened his own practice “360 Osteopathy”. Dr. West gives us his take on working for a hospital system vs working for himself – the challenges and benefits. He is a physiatrist who practice is 99% OMM. He spends some time comparing and contrasting PM&R and OMM, which may be beneficial for students deciding between these two specialties. He also gives some incredible book and podcast recommendations. Enjoy our conversation!  Dr. West email: tonyphiz@gmail.com OMM Podcast email: onmmpodcast@gmail.com
Her medical journey began after being hit by a car while riding her bicycle. She never broke any bones but that trauma manifested in her body as a daily headache. She never felt heard by the physician who examined her after the accident and from that time forward resolved to become a caring, compassionate physician who listened attentively to her patient’s. OMM was her saving grace and the mentoring of Dr. Ed Stiles inspired her to choose a career path using the OMM. Today she is an ONMM Residency director educating and inspiring the next generation of osteopathic physicians. An athlete himself, interest in MSK medicine was a great fit. Enjoying medicine and the ICU he decided to train as an Internist, but never lost his desire to treat athletes. Following residency, he matriculated into a Sports Medicine Fellowship where his skills and knowledge of OMM were in everyday use. He values all the modalities of OMT but has found great utility in the Fascial Distortion Model Technique in treating all patients with musculoskeletal pain not only athletes. He says although this technique may be painful but is not harmful. The body has inherent intelligence which communicates with us via the body language of the patient.  Enjoy this conversation as we learn about Dr. Paiva’s career trajectory and more about the Fascial Distortion Model. tpaiva@ucdavis.edu onmmpodcast@gmail.com
