It's November, and here in the Northern Hemisphere that means cold weather and time to recover from the season. What better time than now to think about next season, your races, and how to best plan for them. We discuss how to plan out that big season picture (Macrocycle) and then begin to put the pieces in place. In part one, we discuss the general idea of periodization and the first few parts of your season, including recovery, base, and build.
The crew sits down for our one year anniversary episode. Who would have thought we'd have stuck with this for one year and 44 episodes. Today is a long one, so buckle up. We talk all things 70.3 North Carolina, from the drive down to the dinner afterwards. We also hit on the race in the middle also.
We end the show getting a little introspective on how the last year has gone, how we've changed, how we've grown, and the things we are looking forward to moving forward. It's been an awesome year, and if you've been with us since the beginning, we genuinely appreciate you taking time out of your schedule to listen.

Today the coaches discuss some of the important aspects of hydrating and fueling for your workouts of various lengths and intensities. There is a lot of info out there, and it can get confusing sometimes, so we attempt to distill it down into the key parts, so that you are able to perform to your best during your training. We go over water vs. hydration mixes, types of carbs, and how much you can handle, the role of caffeine, as well as other important fueling tips.

Today we have two Team Next Level Athletes, our co-host James Koh, along with teammate Koichi Iwata who had an amazing time at the Philly Marathon this past weekend. James completed his first marathon and Koichi his second. Both James and Koichi share some of their highs and lows of race day, along with lessons they learned along the way. It's a great episode that really can help all athletes learn things for their next race, be it a 5k or a marathon.
No two ways around it, multisport is an equipment intensive endeavor. There's gear for all three sports, and it's tough to wrap your head around what you need, what is nice to have, and what is probably a waste of time and money. In this episode we discuss that gear and try and give you some helpful tips that will make it easier to decide what things to purchase when starting out, what things to wait on, and what things to skip all together.

We are happy to have our first guest on the pod. We sit down and chat with Dr. John Mendenhall. Dr. John is our fearless leader, and the director of the team that has brought us all together. During the pod we get into John's background in sport, from his short lived career as an offensive lineman, to his experiences as a D1 college swimmer (skip to 9:00 in for a phenomenal story), and then we dig into how he came to multisport and eventually got into coaching. This episode was an absolute blast to record, and I think everyone will be able to find some great bits of advice from Dr. John as well as a bunch of laughs along the way. If you like this episode, please make sure to check out our YouTube channel where we pepper Dr. John with some Rapid Fire questions.

Welcome back to episode 2. This one started to get pretty deep, so we decided to split it into two episodes. This first part will help the beginner multisport athlete navigate the confusing and anxiety ridden side of picking that first race and training properly so you are ready to smash it come race day. Join Team Next Level Coaches while we discuss some of the important aspects of deciding how to find that perfect race (hint: there isn't one) and how to do the right amount of the right kind of training so that you are ready to have a great experience in your first race.

We recorded this episode a while ago, but in it we discuss our opinions on the current use of performance enhancing drugs in sport. We keep things light hearted as we dive into this complex and thought provoking topic.
Does it seem like you can never unlock that run potential during a triathlon? You're a stud during your workouts, but it always falls apart on race day? Listen to the coaches discuss what might be the thing holding you back, and give ideas on how to fix it. Spoiler alert, it isn't running more, or running harder.
We know it's been a while, but 2024 has been a crazy year for Team Next Level. We want you to know that we are back, and will be pushing out content more regularly in 2025. Join us for a look back on what's happened this past season through some ups and downs. We talk about all that we've learned and how we plan to apply it to our future plans.
The coaches tackle what most people would argue is the most challenging discipline to get better at. Especially if you are learning to swim as an adult. We discuss what tips and tricks helped us out when getting into the water and learning to swim. We then take a deep dive (see what I did there) into things you can do to improve your swim.
In part 2 of our series on planning out your season we discuss what the final weeks of training should look like and how to adjust for different races. We also dive into other periodization models such as block and reverse periodization.

We are a week out from our last race of the year. We've been building towards this as our "A" race all season and we are beyond pumped to share an overview of the race, our goals and expectations. Come along as Coach James divulges the inner workings of his modeling software that allow him to predict our performance down to the second. If anyone out there is doing this race, either this year or in the future, we also discuss how to navigate a split transition, point to point race and the details that will make race day less stressful.

Coach James walks us through his epic experience at Jones Beach 70.3. An inaugural event with what was supposed to be close to 4,000 competitors and what ended up having pretty crazy weather conditions. After hearing his experience we dive into how to best prepare for the worst that mother nature might throw at you. We can't change the weather, but we can prepare for it. From what to wear, to how it might change pacing or fueling strategies, we try to cover it all. Listen along so that you can be ready for that next race if the weather doesn't decide to cooperate.
The coaches sit down for our first interview in a while. We welcome Matt Schuster into the studio tonight. Matt has a great story that really embodies the Triathlon spirit. As a guy working a corporate gig in marketing, he just wasn't happy. Around the same time he discovers a newfound love for endurance sports and over the last three years he's worked to turn his love of sport into a career. Listen in as we discuss the origins of his Agegrouper project along with his impressive individual race results.

First up is a recap of the DQ Pine Barrens Triathlon we finished this past weekend. Team Next Level brought home a bunch of hardware. Then in part two, as sort of a follow up to our last episode we talk about what kind of different race character are you? Are you "The Dude" or "The Terminator" or maybe one of the other ones we talk about? Do you agree with our self assessment of who we are as racers? And please make it to the end listen to poor Koichi's experience with his torpedo water bottle :)
