Furkhan interviews Laszlo (Les) Suhajda, who shares his harrowing yet inspirational story of escaping communist Hungary as a child. Les discusses the harrowing journey his family took to attain freedom, the importance of faith in overcoming tremendous adversity, and the life-altering experiences that shaped his resilience and entrepreneurial spirit. He also highlights the dangers of socialism, the impact of the Hungarian Revolution, and his entrepreneurial endeavours in the United States. The episode encapsulates the importance of historical awareness, the role of faith in sustaining community, and the pursuit of freedom through hard work and perseverance.
Laszlo (Les) Suhajda is a Hungarian-born refugee, elite multisport athlete, U.S. Navy veteran, author, and innovator in wildfire-mitigation technology. After escaping Hungary with his family following the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, Les arrived in the United States at the age of five, where his family was sponsored and resettled in Illinois—an experience that profoundly shaped his lifelong commitment to service, excellence, and gratitude.
Les distinguished himself as an exceptional athlete, competing at high levels in soccer, football, basketball, and wrestling. He set a long-standing scoring record at Aurora College in soccer and became the only wrestler in the school’s history to qualify for the NAIA National Championships. His athletic journey continued through military service, where he competed in elite soccer and advanced to the 1976 U.S. Olympic Soccer Trials.
Les is also the author of Twelve Bells to Freedom, a powerful account drawn from recorded firsthand stories of his parents’ lives in Hungary during World War II and the years leading up to their escape.
Today, Les serves as President of Laszlo Corporation, where he leads the development of USDA-approved fire-suppression and wildfire-mitigation solutions to protect homes, communities, businesses, and critical infrastructure. His work focuses on proactive fire prevention, firebreak creation, and active fire suppression technologies.

Starting with a childhood love for music, Jeeyoon details her struggles with family expectations, a tumultuous relationship with her father, and a challenging marriage. Despite these obstacles, she found solace and meaning in music. Jeeyoon emphasizes the power of storytelling and emotional connection in her performances and describes how she uses music to heal herself and others. This heartfelt conversation delves into the transformative power of music and the resilience required to overcome life's adversities.
Award-winning classical pianist Jeeyoon Kim has delighted audiences across the United States and the world with her combination of sensitive artistry, consummate musicianship, impeccable technique, and engaging and innovative concert experiences.’ (New York Classical Review)
Since her celebrated 2016 debut album 10 More Minutes, Jeeyoon has continued to captivate listeners with her artistry and heartfelt communication on stage. Her second album and concert project, Over. Above. Beyond, expanded the boundaries of traditional piano performance through an innovative collaboration with New York-based visual artist Moonsub Shin. The resulting multimedia concert and its award-winning music video exemplified Jeeyoon’s commitment to creating a new concert experience that unites sound, imagery, and emotion.
Her next project, 시음 /si-úm/—developed during her residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity’s “Concert in the 21st Century” program—fused poetry, black-and-white photography, and music to explore the intersection of sound, silence, and the senses.
In 2025, Jeeyoon releases her latest album, Radiance, a collaboration with contemporary visual artists from ten different countries that offers a new light and interpretation of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Through this project, she reimagines the iconic work with a modern sensibility—blending sound, colour, and visual storytelling to invite audiences into a fresh, immersive experience. Radiance celebrates light in all its forms: emotional, spiritual, and artistic.
Also in 2025, Jeeyoon expands her artistic storytelling through her fourth book, Beyond the Keys: Music and Stories of Inspiration. The book pairs fifty-two reflective essays with QR-linked piano performances, inviting readers to experience her music and writing in harmony. It follows her previous books, including Whenever You’re Ready (2021), a self-help memoir in concert form that resonated deeply with readers worldwide and became a top-three bestseller in South Korea’s self-help category.
Jeeyoon began studying the piano at the age of four, and her love of music propelled her through her undergraduate studies in piano performance in her native South Korea. After moving to the United States, she earned her Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance, with Distinction, from Indiana University’s renowned Jacobs School of Music.

Some of these organizations have been endorsed by Bill Clinton, Forest Whitaker, Arcade Fire, Ashley Judd, Zak Williams (son of Robin Williams), and Tim Shriver, founder of the Special Olympics. Matthew has successfully recovered from schizophrenia and has bicycled across Canada twice. He also created www.DonateIndigenous.ca, listing the indigenous charities in Canada, so people can know where to donate to offer their help and support.

In this week’s episode, I sit down with Adriene Caldwell, author of Unbroken: Life Outside the Lines.
Adriene’s story is one of profound complexity, resilience, and courage. From early childhood through her twenties, she endured sexual assault, poverty, emotional and physical abuse, mental illness, and homelessness—circumstances that could have shattered anyone.
Yet, Adriene’s journey challenges us to see beyond the surface of survival. She opens up about her deeply conflicted relationship with her abuser—a relationship she once believed was rooted in love. Her willingness to confront that truth, without shame or self-judgment, offers a raw and powerful lens into what it means to be human.
Together, we explore:
How trauma can shape attachment and distort our understanding of love and safety
The complex process of making sense of perceived maturity and culpability after abuse
How meaning-making, compassion, and courage can transform even the darkest experiences into pathways of healing
This conversation is not about blame—it’s about understanding the complexity of the human condition, and how healing often begins with self-forgiveness and radical honesty.
Unbroken explores themes of family, love, and what it means to find your place in a world unwilling to play the role of saviour. A gripping, first-hand account of the effects of untreated mental illness, physical abuse, sexual assault, pedophilia and traumatic foster care, Adriene’s story is one of destruction and discovery - of darkness given free rein and an innate light that refuses to dim.

In this episode, Furkhan is joined by Emma Lyons, the founder of Trauma Matrix, to explore the pervasive and toxic nature of shame, especially its impact on women. Emma shares her personal journey of overcoming childhood shame and narcissistic family dynamics, emphasizing that shame is a tool of control rooted in many societal structures. The discussion delves into the distinction between shame and guilt, the cultural factors driving shame, and practical steps to release oneself from shame's grip. Emma highlights how shame affects various aspects of life, from addiction to personal relationships, and provides listeners with actionable insights to reclaim their freedom from shame.
Emma Lyons is a trauma-informed healer and founder of The Trauma Matrix, where she helps women break up with the shame voice that’s been sabotaging their success, relationships, and visibility for years. After studying law and international human rights, Emma turned away from a life path that looked good on paper but felt like slow death — and spent the next decade deep in the healing world. Despite all the therapy, yoga, mindset work, and energy practices, she still found herself stuck in loops of self-erasure, burnout, and invisibility… until she uncovered the more profound truth: she’d internalized a narcissistic system of control, and it was running her from the inside out.
Today, Emma helps high-functioning, heart-led women dismantle that inner narcissist, the shame voice that humiliates, controls, and impersonates them, so they can reclaim clarity, power, and nervous system freedom. If your audience is ready for truth bombs, psychic jailbreaks, and the missing piece no one else is talking about, Emma delivers.
