Description
Going beyond the predictable means generating a future that was not going to happen anyway. To create a future that was not going to happen anyway, an individual has to go beyond what they already know or have done before.
Jono Brent and Marc Pringle of In Your Corner (IYC) talk with guests about circumstances that have shaped them, and how they used these as catalysts for growth. We unpack what going beyond their predictable looks like for them, and learn how we can all shift who we are, what we know, and what we do to create an extraordinary future that goes beyond our predictable.

Harriet Brent, our next guest on Going Beyond The Predictable, often finds herself questioning whether she’s good enough. At school, self-doubt surfaced during exams, and staying motivated was a challenge. But nursing school was different. When things got tough during her training, Harriet’s default identity resurfaced - telling her she wasn’t good enough and that she should step back. But this time, she didn’t. What changed? She had a burning ambition to be a nurse so she could help people like the nurses who helped her.In this episode, Marc and Jono speak with a very special guest, Jono’s daughter, for an honest conversation about self-doubt and how growing up with Crohn’s disease shaped how she experiences the world. We talk about how her ambition to be a nurse helped her go beyond her predictable, and why that has been far more compelling than any push from behind.---For more on In Your Corner, visit www.inyourcorner.co.nz or check us out on LinkedIn at https://nz.linkedin.com/company/in-your-corner-co-nzWe’re currently taking applications for our Transformational Leadership Programme, a nine month programme that blends coaching with a powerful learning experience and opportunity to join a cohort of other leaders who want to make a big impact. We think many of you will resonate with this one. And not just fellow football fans or proud Tasmanians! Our latest guest on Going Beyond the Predictable is someone who has always done everything he can to avoid disappointing people. Whether that’s his family, his friends, or his colleagues at TasWater - saying yes has always felt easier than saying no. As Head of Communications & Engagement and now Acting Head of Operations (South) for Tasmania’s state-wide water and sewerage utility, Callan Paske has had to make some shifts to challenge his default identity, especially as he finds himself in a completely new role and set of challenges - as deploying the same success strategy is no longer a fit for who he needs or wants to be. Callan has been working with In Your Corner through coaching for the past 18 months. If you’re a leader curious about how coaching could support your own growth, please reach out to Simon@inyourcorner.co.nz.We’re also taking applications for our Transformational Leadership Programme, a nine month programme that blends coaching with a powerful learning experience and opportunity to join a cohort of other leaders who want to make a big impact. In this conversation of Going Beyond The Predictable, Jeremy Lightfoot joins Jono and Marc to reflect on moments where he has stepped beyond his comfort zone - even when his identity was telling him to retreat. Growing up in a faith-based household, Jeremy found himself caught between two worlds: one with his family, and another with his friends. He talks about what it was like to never feel fully himself in either space and how overtime he has learned how to break that pattern. Jeremy shares how his upbringing gave him a strong sense of integrity, and how that continues to shape his life today. He speaks about the power of making bold declarations and following through - whether that’s running marathons, swimming Lake Windermere, or in his role as Chief Executive of Ara Poutama Aotearoa - Department of Corrections NZ.Don't forget to Follow us on Spotify to be notified when future episodes are released. Kerry-Leigh Dougall (Ngāti Pahuwera, Ngāti Kahungunu ki te Wairoa), our next guest on Going Beyond the Predictable, carries a default identity of independence and self-reliance. When dreaming up our podcast, this next guest was one of the first people to come to mind. A courageous leader, mother and friend, Lee Gardiner (Ngāti Tūwharetoa) embodies what it means to go beyond the predictable. One to never back down from a challenge, Lee is well known for her tenacity, and it is no surprise that where Lee goes, people follow. Lee talked with us about her childhood experiences (from as young as the age of three) and how these have shaped her. We discovered where she gets her drive (if you know Lee, you have probably wondered this yourself) and discussed her experience connecting with her whakapapa as an adult after being raised in a Pākehā world. This was a special conversation. Thank you, Lee, for sharing your story. Don't forget to Follow us on Spotify to be notified when future episodes are released. We are fortunate to have the powerhouse, Dame Noeline Taurua, as the first guest on our podcast.Dame Noeline (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Whātua) became the Silver Ferns Coach in 2018. In just 11 months, she led the Silver Ferns from a medal-less finish at the 2018 Commonwealth Games to world champions at the2019 Netball World Cup. During this period, she balanced dual roles as head coach of both the Silver Ferns and Sunshine Coast Lightning. In the 2020 New Year Honours, Noeline was appointed a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to netball. While Noeline’s coaching success and many accolades are highly impressive - if youlistened to our first podcast, you will know that we aren't here to talk to our guests about their achievements. Instead, our aim is to discover what they had to confront and who they had to become in order to generate a future beyond the predictable. We talked to Noeline about:Stepping forward and speaking up despite the natural tendency to withdrawHer childhood experiences and identity and how these show up todayGoing from looking for the perfect 'recipe' for how to coach to understanding who she is and creating her own styleCommitting without knowing how - like starting a franchise sports team from scratch in a new country.Connecting to possibility when the outcome isn't clearHer advice on going beyond your predictable Stick around for a short reflection at the end on what we learned from the conversation. And lastly - a note from Noeline: "While I am guilty of not mentioning my family much in the podcast, they are my rocks, and couldn't have achieved any of this without them." We hope you enjoy it!Don't forget to follow us to be notified when future episodes are released.Visit our website: https://www.inyourcorner.co.nz/LinkedIn: https://nz.linkedin.com/company/in-your-corner-co-nz
