Taking an SSRI or SNRI is considered the gold standard for PPPD treatment. But is it?
Honestly, it depends. (And you know we’re gonna take a look at the research!)
A lot of people are really sensitive to medication or simply don’t want to take it.
And while you don’t need to take medication—it could be helpful. It could also not be helpful.
To get to the best answer for your unique situation, it involves considering your specific wants and needs, goals, and timeline.
In this episode, we’ll dig into:
What the research says about the efficacy of SSRIs and SNRIs for treating PPPD
Why SSRI/SNRIs are being considered as a treatment tool to begin with
The relationship between our nervous system and dizziness
Real world examples of how your brain tries to protect you
New module that’s coming to Vestibular Group Fit this year
How an SSRI or SNRI can help treat PPPD
Things to do aside from meds to help regulate the nervous system
The first step of better managing PPPD
No, you can’t think your way out of chronic dizziness, but your brain and the way you’re thinking about things does have a big impact on your vestibular disorder.
There is no right or wrong way to go about treating PPPD, vestibular migraine, or any other vestibular disorder.
And… it’s expected for things to be changing and shifting as you try treatment methods, learn new things, or other goals or priorities force you to change your plan a bit.
Things can get better! I see it every week inside Vestibular Group Fit! We’d love to see you in there.

You might be familiar with the placebo effect, which is the opposite of the nocebo effect.
The nocebo effect is how negative expectations about how medical encounters can produce negative outcomes.
And, as we’ve talked about before, your brain is a prediction machine. That’s literally its job!
So what does this actually look like in everyday life, how can it impact vestibular disorders, and the role mindset plays in the impact of the nocebo effect.
In this episode, we’ll dig into:
How side effects play a role in the nocebo effect
Examples of the prediction method in action
What research reveals about the impact of the nocebo effect
How asking better questions can lessen the impact of the nocebo effect
When your brain is told something, it will believe it.
As humans, we’re designed to find the negatives. And we know that about ourselves, so we need to then intentionally decide that we’re going to shift the way we think about things.
Though it’s not always our first instinct, it’s absolutely doable!

Excessive screen time is increasing your dizziness, anxiety, and depression.
Funny enough, people are catching on to this and looking for ideas of what to do other than watching TV or scrolling on social media.
This is obviously a common challenge and this episode is coming on the heels of the one about morning and evening routines. (You’ll find the link to listen to that show below.)
So… what can you do instead of doomscrolling or binging Netflix that can also be supportive for managing your vestibular disorder? Let’s get into it!
In this episode, we’ll dig into:
Reasons why people want to reduce screen time
How increased screen time impacts anxiety, depression, and mood
What activities members of Vestibular Group Fit are swapping for screen time
Ideas for how you can set up your environment for less screen time
I’ve been using my social media less and opting for more long-form content.
It is HARD to make these swaps—and—it is possible! So know I’m right there with you.

Prodrome is one of those things I get asked about a lot. But not in the way that’s quite so direct.
Most people don’t know that what they’re asking me about is actually “prodrome.” The question usually comes in as something like, “I’m having [insert symptom]—why is that?”
In this episode, we’ll dig into:
The 4 phases of a vestibular migraine
What to know about the interictal phase
Symptoms of prodrome you might be missing
How to start tracking your prodrome phase
How to treat the prodrome phase
As mentioned, some people think they don’t have a prodrome phase of their migraine when in reality… they’re just missing it.
Prodrome is pretty cool because you can get yourself out of the attack simply by recognizing your symptoms. (Yeah, pretty powerful!)

“I woke up one day and my whole world was spinning—and it hasn’t stopped since.”
I’d love to introduce you to Juli, a Vestibular Group Fit member!
She’s here to tell you her story—including:How she waited over 3 years to be seen by a neurologist. What she got out of last year’s Vestibular Virtual Summit. And how she flew to Vegas for a trip this year!
I know it can be so supportive to hear other peoples’ success stories of being able to successfully live—and thrive—with a vestibular disorder. These are some of my favorite conversations to have!
In this episode, we’ll dig into:
Juli’s backstory & her experience with chronic dizziness
Her very recent vestibular disorder diagnosis
How Juli knew something was wrong
What type of treatment Juli has had since her diagnosis
What Juli wants others to know about the VNG balance test
What led Juli to Dr Madison & VGF
The importance of identifying your triggers
How VGF has positively impacted Juli’s life
What Juli does regularly to build a bigger bucket
How Juli started to ask for help & build a support system
“I’m not alone, there’s a community in Vestibular Group Fit.”
You’re likely already doing some things right, just like Juli with her toolkit (before she knew they were a real thing). In VGF, you get to build on that!
In group, you discover new tools to add to that toolkit, better advice for your unique situation, and you’re able to rebuild that self-trust that’s been eroded by time and healthcare providers telling you “nothing is wrong” when clearly—there is. Hope to see you in there!

The stages (or phases) of migraine are important to understand because when we’re talking about vestibular migraine a lot of people say they feel symptomatic all the time.
That’s not only very possible with VM—it’s also vital to know which phase you’re in so you know how to treat it.
Each of the 5 phases of migraine can last different amounts of time and need to be treated differently.
In this episode, we’ll dig into:
Symptoms of vestibular migraine
How long to track VM symptoms
What the 4 phases of a vestibular migraine are
What to know about the overlooked 5th phase of VM
How to treat the different stages of a vestibular migraine
Everyone experiences the stages of VM differently. Give yourself time and space to start noticing what’s going on with your body and your unique rhythm.
Writing down (tracking) your symptoms is a necessary step to understanding how you experience the stages of migraine and makes treatment much easier!
And if you’d like more support to manage your migraine attacks, that’s exactly what we do inside Vestibular Group Fit!

People are frequently asking about the difference between BPPV and vestibular migraine (VM), so we’re getting into that on this episode!
Aside from them both causing nystagmus (involuntary eye movement), these are not even a little bit the same thing.
But vestibular migraine can cause nystagmus which can present identically to BPPV—and that can be really confusing for providers and patients alike!
So… let’s explore how you can determine what’s what and what the appropriate treatment options are for each.
In this episode, we’ll dig into:
The difference between BPPV and vestibular migraine
The one similarity between BPPV and vestibular migraine
The role the inner ear crystals play in BPPV
What the Epley maneuver can be used to treat
How vestibular migraine can cause positional vertigo
How to treat BPPV vs vestibular migraine
It’s critical to land on the correct diagnosis in order to know which treatment path to choose. The best way to tell what you’re dealing with is to work with a physical therapist because in science, we find that they’re the best people to diagnose.
And remember, it is possible to have more than one vestibular disorder and to not feel dizzy everyday.

In this episode, we’ll dig into:
Neck pain and the prodromal phase of migraine
3 things to consider when having neck pain and migraine
Which muscles in the upper and middle back to be mindful of
What’s in the 6-week neck protocol in Vestibular Group Fit
How to have the best posture for your neck
It is completely normal to not actually want to move your neck because that typically makes you feel more dizzy. And… it’s going to help you so much more in the long run if you welcome movement back into your neck. Dr. Jenna Green joins me, Dr. Madison Oak, for this episode all about vestibular rehab therapy (VRT)! If you don’t know, Dr. Jenna is my work wife inside Vestibular Group Fit.
One thing you’ll hear us stress is that you can be not ready for VRT. We’ve both (kindly) kicked people out of therapy before because it wasn’t the best option for them at that time.
There’s a lot we unearth not just about what VRT actually looks like, but also how to find the best setting and physical therapist for your treatment.
In this episode, we’ll dig into:
What is vestibular rehab therapy (or VRT)
How to find a vestibular rehabilitation physical therapist near you
Why it’s so important to have a good relationship with your PT
Symptoms you should see a physical therapist for
How seeing a vestibular PT can help with anxiety
How frequently & how long you need to see a vestibular physical therapist for
How much of vestibular rehab is at-home vs what you do in the clinic
Why fewer PTs are working with insurance and what you can do about it
What often happens when you start VRT too soon
The difference between VRT basics and traditional VRT
How affordable the vestibular rehab therapy basics are
How to know you are ready to start vestibular rehab therapy
The biggest benefit of telehealth VRT
Sometimes TIME is the most proactive thing you can do for your body, to regulate your system.
There is a huge upside to telehealth VRT, so don’t worry if you don’t have a trained PT in your area. You have options!
Most vestibular PTs are kind and highly empathetic people. They want to know if you’re feeling a certain way about your exercises. For the best benefit to you, VRT needs to be a collaborative experience.
If you have any other questions about vestibular rehab therapy—what VRT is, the types of exercises prescribed in VRT, or if Vestibular Group Fit is right for you—DM us! You’ve got our contact info below.

And it is possible, with a little information and guidance, to figure out which you may be dealing with.
In this episode, we’ll dig into:
How PPPD is different from vestibular migraine
The diagnostic criteria for PPPD and vestibular migraine
The most important piece of criteria for PPPD that most ignore
What to notice about the symptoms of PPPD vs vestibular migraine
If you can have PPPD and vestibular migraine
The best thing to do to figure out if you have PPPD or VM
What to do once you determine if it’s PPPD or vestibular migraine
What I want you to know is that both of these are treatable and get better.
A comprehensive treatment plan is the best approach no matter if you’re dealing with PPPD or vestibular migraine.
