In today's episode, we're talking about bacteria and the impact artificial sweeteners can have on your gut health. Did you know that you’ve got more bacterial cells in your body than human cells? Bacteria are the biggest part of what makes us uniquely human. You are a walking bacterial super-organism. Artificial sweeteners—like sucralose, aspartame, and saccharin—aren’t neutral because they have no caloric value as so many love to postulate. A study published in the Journal of Nature in 2014 revealed that the altered bacterial balance brought on by ingesting artificial sweeteners triggered glucose intolerance—basically, Splenda or Ace K lay the ground work for diabetes in the future. Artificial sweeteners shift the gut away from butyrate-producing species (our favorite short chain fatty acid) and toward inflammatory ones. In today's episode, we're talking about why supposed "healthy" foods can prevent us from losing weight. For example, Siete tortillas or chips are not health-promoting foods. This doesn’t mean they are bad, but when we remove everything but the starch component, press it, heat it, sit at our desk and eat it, we can fully expect that the area around our hips and belly button are going to expand. Not to mention these gluten-free starches are essentially devoid of all manner of vitamins, minerals and polyphenols. If wheat berries are a challenge for your body, you will be best served using zucchini for noodles and getting really creative with your baked goods. Today is a great day to check your trades. Many times, in our efforts to get our food lined up in a fashion that promotes a greater level of health, we inadvertently trade toxicity for ultra processed foods. Let me start off by saying there is zero judgement here. While substituting corn syrup loaded yogurt for vanilla yogurt with 28 grams of sugar may not be the best choice, it's at least a sign that you are consciously considering what you are consuming. By some psychological magic we have been duped into believing we need to watch out for the cholesterol in eggs, the sugar in fruit, the saturated fat in beef and lectins in seeds, because they are coming for our health. In this episode, I'm talking about how we can go from surviving to thriving. For the last 7 years I have been working with a woman to help get her energy, body composition, blood sugar, stress response under control and her life performance optimized. In today's episode I'm talking about why I don't use Nyquil, Dayquil, or Tylenol if I get sick. The way I look at it is, the symptoms of acute illness - headache, chills, fever, mucous even coughing, are signs that my body is working in its wisdom to clear infection. These uncomfortable symptoms are not the random rebellion of my body trying to keep me from enjoying life. My body is taking the most precise infinitely complex actions to make sure I survive this viral or bacterial illness. If I were to consume one of the drugs as a way to reduce my discomfort I would be short circuiting my body's intelligence and potentially setting myself up for more immune challenges later on in life.
