Description

Hi! Welcome to Business Lesbian! This is a creative endeavor fueld by a gentle existential crisis currently being experienced by yours truly: Brittany Diederich. The Business Lesbian. From 2011-2022 I worked at my family construction business, rose through the ranks, and ended up as the Director of Finance and Administration and Part-Owner. It was a wonderful learning experience and I'm so grateful for the opportunity and the insane amount of nepotism I benefitted from. In 2022, I made the difficult decision to leave the business; it just wasn't the right space for me, and that leads us to now. Lucky for me, that wasn't the only good stroke of luck I've had. I've met, befriended, and worked with incredible people who have shaped my worldview in a positive way. There are so many people pouring their hearts into businesses or passions that are rooted in doing the right thing. I love that. They give me hope in humanity. This podcast is an opportunity to highlight them and the fact that they are using their business and voice as a force for good.Join me as I spiral and talk to these truly wonderful humans who are doing incredible things; hopefully their stories will inspire and enlighten you the way they have for me.

It's easy to justify staying out of politics. Often debates lead to unproductive arguments that damage relationships and just aren't fun to talk about. People exist in all forms and have priorities all over the place; the folks we elect hopefully represent the majority of their constituents accurately and will advance their interests accordingly. That's how democracy is supposed to work. Unfortunately for queer, non-binary, and other LGBTQIA+ humans, staying out of it is not a privilege we ge...
This episode brings the first season of Business Lesbian to a close. Joining us in conversation are yogis, friends, and family (collectively: framily). The pro yogis are Ashleigh Smith and Gina Thiel, and then we have the OG BL’s: Molly Swanston, Meagan McDougall. Making her return to the pod in a new capacity (documentarian vs interview subject) is Morgan Allora, now humbly known as “Morgy Morg”. Tuning in, you’ll hear what to expect from Season 2 of Business Lesbian, and what Brittany will ...
Today's conversation is packed with insight, wisdom, and a perspective that is so necessary at this point in history. On the show is Dr. Anjali Bhagra, who is a physician and clinical investigative internist at Mayo Clinic, as well as the Medical Director of the Office of Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity! Our guest generously shares many of her thoughts on trust and bias, what is needed for meaningful allyship, and how to stand up for important issues in a professional setting. She also unpac...
It’s been a minute since the last ruminates episode and there was a low-hanging fruit remix of our theme song that spurred this BL mini-sode into existence. Spooky lesbians anyone? In this episode/Halloween, Meagan and Molly hop on the pod to catch up and share their Halloweekend shenanigans, Molly’s second (first?) Halloween as a mom, the transition of the seasons and the difference between indoor and outdoor fall, “Jim-bouree” and using marco polo as a way to stay close with friends when sus...
Scribble ladies? check. Body positivity? check. The announcement of a second business venture from a self-identified “zillenial” artist who is absolutely crushing the game? check-but this time using a satisfyingly smooth glass pen that you will be able to buy at Hannah Stelter’s “Scribble Lady Co” merchandise and art supply company. We got Molly back on the show to co-host the interview with Brittany, so this is a great episode! Can it get any better? Maybe if Brittany used the word “siiiiick...
Therapy changed my life, full-stop. I suffer(ed) from anxiety, depression, and a pretty poor self-image; through therapy I was able to practice self-compassion, understand and love myself, and guide myself to a path that is so fulfilling. I really cannot advocate enough for this critical form of medical care.I am so proud of this episode which highlights Natalie Reiter’s private counseling practice in Fargo, ND. Tune in to hear Natalie’s thoughts on the rules of engagement you hear at th...
Our dog Mac was found with three siblings and his mom on the Turtle Mountain Animal reservation back in 2018; he came to us about 14 weeks old, still processing his de-wormer (which was gross, but necessary), but with a face that demanded forgiveness each time he pooped on the floor. Four years later, I still feel really grateful to Keith Benning and the whole team of staff and volunteers at Turtle Mountain Animal Rescue (TMAR) for this silly companion that brings me so much joy and the fact ...
pronounced: good-buh-eye-bee-eye, translates to: Goodbye Industrial Builders, Incorporated.I have been asked, many times, why I would leave a job I was good at, at a company that my family and I owned, when I had a bright and fairly certain future ahead of me. This episode is an attempt to explain that and process the end.On Friday September 2nd, I had my last day at my family business after a 9 month notice. I stayed for so long so that I could always look back and say that I did my best to ...
Sounding like a broken record here, but I have some amazing friends doing wonderful things. With fall approaching, back to school is on top of mind for all the educators and folks with kiddos, so I thought it would be nice to check in on those doing the work. Very proud to showcase them.I asked my friends who are different points in their teaching careers and specialties to join me in studio to talk about everything from motivation, connecting with students, compensation and leave benefits fo...
Shownotes by We Edit Podcasts: Thunder Coffee was born out of a love of specialty coffee – because who doesn’t love specialty coffee? The business began as a mobile coffee cart in 2017, and despite the pandemic and a few other challenges, it is now a fully-fledged coffee shop situated in Fargo and run by Skyler Dutton, his brother Dexter, and his wife Nicole. Thunder Coffee is where Skyler gets his cup filled (in more ways than one) and it takes up a large portion of dinner time conversa...
*pun intended, she's a photographer. FORESHADOWING-she may or may not also become our show photographer starting with S1 E12 aka THE FINALEMorgan is a pretty exceptional human being. Creative, articulate, and a master of capturing the essence of a moment, she is a great person to be around whether she’s in front of or behind a camera. And if she’s behind the camera and it’s pointed at you, odds are you are about to have a new profile picture. We have known each other for a few years and I was ...
You know how sometimes you meet someone and just immediately click? That’s how it was when I met our inaugural episode’s guests, Molly Swanston and Meagan McDougall. Both were in similar boats to me; working in a male-dominated field but having the cutting edge of nepotism courtesy of the being part of the family who owns the business. Because they are wonderful and I’m quite comfortable with them, we had a really natural, fun conversation on everything from transparency about our queerness t...

This podcast has officially entered “that’s showbiz baby” status in the sense that I have episodes pending publishing after corporate approval. My marketing friends warned me about this! That’s fine, no worries, but that means I don’t have a new episode for you this week or next, so count your lucky stars, you get to listen to me ruminate once again to fill the void whilst I create more contentIn this episode, I discuss the magical community that comes courtesy of “friends of friends”, my wil...

I don’t have anything recorded to drop this week but I had a lot on my mind and decided to practice my recording/editing skills and record a short eight minute episode. In it, I talk about what I hope the show will be and then clarify what listeners should reasonably expect from a chaos monster like myself.I debate whether I will continue to be a Business Lesbian if I am not actively employed by a Business, talk about why I’m sick of conforming to expectations (Smallville?), and then talk abo...
