No. 17: A Facelift for the Photo Industry

Covered in this Episode: -Professional vs. Amateur qualities list. -Photographers getting a bad rep in the media. -Industry standards.   Things you can do today to elevate your business:   Write down how much it would take you to survive. This is your budget. If you’ve done the above. Add up all of your expenses and see how much you need to make a month, a quarter, a year. However you want to track it. How much are you putting into the session? Then tack on 50% of that. Plus! Don’t forget about taxes! That’s your pricing. Write up your dream pricing. I know this may seem crazy and there are tons of stuff you have to work through, not just in business, but mentally as far as your self worth. But do it, get comfortable with those numbers. It won’t happen overnight, trust the process. If you are accepting clients and they’re paying you, but the IRS doesn’t see that you’re “in business”. Do yourself a favor and create a savings account. Start saving for taxes and take them out of what you make, and include whatever retail taxes that are in that too. Register your business with the state.   What's in my bag No. 2: 1. Episode # 15: Learning When to Walk Away

You're listening to Creatives Building Businesses Episode number 15! Today we're talking about when to walk away, from relationships to projects. Here’s how it can show up in relationships. Here’s some questions to ask yourself after leaving an interaction with someone you feel might be draining your energy and you’ll know! -Was this time meaningful and if so where is my energy level after I hang out with this person?-Was I heard in this conversation? Meaning: was this a two person conversation or one? It’s understandable if your friend is going through something where they have a bad day or month, but if the conversation is always about them and their life, honey you need to walk away.-Do you feel anxious, irritated or grumpy? If you answer yes then give yourself a break from this person.

Epi #14: What To Do When Life Happens

You're listening to Creatives Building Businesses Episode number 14! Today we're talking about what to do when life happens. When a dream opportunity comes up, but you're bogged down with your current responsibilities. Topics: Prioritize the time for your business: I’ll use her words, “ You’re building an empire you don’t have time to do anything else.” Honor your time that you spend on your business. Create time blocks to spend on certain tasks. If you get behind, be gentle on yourself. Take hot baths and go on walks. Do something that your craving to do. It’s ok to step away. At the beginning of your week make a list of priorities of what you need to complete by the end of it. Listen to your body and know when you’ve had enough. Links: Trello

Epi #13: Working Through Blocks + Hard Times

You're listening to Creatives Building Businesses Episode number 13! Today I'm talking about working through your blocks and finding out what's holding you back. Here's what's working:- Coming face to face with your tasks and breaking them down into smaller chunks is a great way to make your big projects more manageable.Schedule them out.- I learned this from Jasmine Star's interview on Amy Porterfield's podcast, Online Marketing Expert. (I'll include the link to the episode in the show notes.) So, whenever you're feeling a negative or overwhelming thought, ask yourself the following questions. 1. Write down the thought. It's sort of like an exorcism. 2. Is this thought true? 3. Am I 100% certain of my response? 4. How does that make you feel? 5. Do you think those feelings are keeping you from your destiny? 6. What would feeling the opposite be like? Do that, because we are not our thoughts. We can choose how we feel.-Journaling in them morning this may sound cheesy, but it's extremely helpful. Juila Cameron calls this morning pages. If you don't know who she is she is the author of so many books that help with creative blocks, but my favorite is called The Artist's Way. It's a workshop book, where she describes the morning pages as the first thing you do every morning to get all of your ideas, thoughts, bitching on paper, so then you can make room in your brain for new ideas. -Turn off your cell phone for a few hours. Let your closest friends and family send you an email in case they need to get a hold of you.
