After a 60-year-old Vermont man dies after a brawl breaks out at a middle school basketball game, the time has come to address parents’ behavior at youth sporting events. In this short episode, I share the four dynamics that every student athlete deals with on game day of their sport of choice. Reforming Youth Sports Culture: Stop Poor Parent Behavior Parents parent, coaches coach, officials officiate, and spectators spectate. This is what has been lost in youth sports. My reflection on this topic comes from 38 years of experience, so I “get it”. From the lack of respect shown to officials and coaches, to blatant disrespect and undermining coaches relationship with players, parents are increasingly taking the fun out of youth "sports". This is a sensitive topic for some, but when you include that the kids of these parents are being taught how to deal with not getting their way.  I have launched my teen personal growth and development site, S.E.A. of Success® Academy Don't forget to check out TeenSpeak- Empowering Today's Youth, a podcast I co-host with Keith Senzer. In this episode, I speak with my friend and fellow Village of Inspiration member, Dr. Miriam Mandel. Dr. Mandel gets deep and hits a home-run on topics that need more conversation, as they will greatly improve the outlook of our kids. Understanding the adolescent brain; how kids interpret some verbal communications and facial expressions. This was an eye opener for me! She also talks about teen vaping and its impact on the brain, something that kids and parents need to be more knowledgeable about. Why adolescents need ample sleep, and the affects in can have on their daily routines. She left clinical pediatrics and has been researching and teaching the connections between mind and body medicine for over 13 years. Her passion is teaching individuals, especially teens and their families, to look for the answers they are seeking on the INSIDE, where all the answers lie. Dr. Mandel currently sees individual clients but most of her time is working with K-12 staff (and parents) in public and private schools helping them learn to self-regulate and self soothe, using their physiology and mindset. She supports them in learning these skills for themselves and the natural progression of teaching it to their students by being the example. It’s a win-win. Lisa began her   career as an educator in a new middle school in Queens- and teaching middle   school history is an experience that greatly influenced her approach to life   and work. Humor, balancing consistency and flexibility, and thinking of   initiatives like unit plans are all things she learned in Queens with the   most amazing groups of 13- and 14-year-olds. She founded the first Democracy Prep High school in the fall of 2009. As   principal, she led the development of a robust and rigorous academic program   that equipped scholars to excel on state tests;Regents pass rates were   routinely over 90%. As an Assistant Superintendent, she launched the second   high school in 2013. But her real passion was in talent. She developed the internal leadership training program now known as Leader U,   a rigorous program for emerging principals to lead rigorous, inclusive   schools aimed at closing the opportunity gap. Under her leadership,   applications for leadership roles increased by over 100%, a rigorous   equitable hiring system was put in place, and a robust leadership curriculum   was developed. In 2018, Lisa became Chief People Officer, leading both Talent   Development and Recruitment. In 2020, she assumed leadership of the Human   Resources team. Under her leadership, she developed key aspects to the current Democracy Prep   talent function. er accomplishments include: Developed and executed several programs geared at mid-level managers to   ensure high-performing teams and strong succession planning;Launched the   Teacher Residency program to build a stronger and more diverse internal   pipeline;Created the first CMO evaluations system and redesigned the teacher   evaluation to align to DP’s commitment to rigor, responsive classrooms,   community engagement and antiracism;Developing a talent infrastructure for   building strong and equitable job descriptions and interview practices. During the pandemic, she also led her teams to re-imagine virtual hiring and   worked creatively to ensure HR policies related to COVID were humane,   equitable, and mission aligned. She is a proud graduate of Amherst College, where she earned her BA in   American Studies and Economics. She also holds an M.Ed in Social Studies   Education from Queens College, and an M. Ed in Education Leadership from   Teachers College, Columbia University. Clifford graduated from ASU with a degree in Kinesiology & spent years as a professional athlete, fighting in the UFC, Bellator & the World Series of Fighting, competing against some of the fiercest competitors on the planet. In college he was a division 1 collegiate wrestler & in 2004 he finished 3rd in the Pac-10. He told the coach that he wanted to fight in the UFC in one year. Teens: Why the Wrath of Attitude and the Lack of Gratitude Jeffrey Froh, a professor from Hofstra University, ran a study on how to increase gratitude and unselfish behavior. They listed the items and events that they appreciated in their lives–many things that, prior to beginning this journal, they might not have realized. Most students reported an increase in happiness and overall gratefulness. When Froh repeated the study with teenagers, he found that the results were less than satisfactory. Teens did not seem to appreciate what they had, and their happiness did not necessarily increase. Attitude: A manner of thinking, feeling, or behaving that reflects a state of mind or disposition. Teens and their attitude: classic eye-rolls, the angry outburst, the sarcastic responses, the very loud and long sigh, the cold shoulder, and the hot temper Some of the reasons for this type of behavior is that they are still developing their identity and displaying their independence. But there must be boundaries as you give them their space. Just as toddlers “test the waters” with boundaries, so will preteens and teens. I’ve witnessed kids displaying these actions with their parents. The troubling part is that the parents allow it to continue, which only enables the behavior When I have experienced them in interactions with me, I use them as teaching points. 1- They know I do not tolerate that kind of behavior, at least not in my presence. 2- I tell kids what they NEED to hear, not what they want to hear 3- If they will not do it in my presence because I don’t allow it, why do they do it at home? a. Answer: it’s tolerated 4- Yes, there are reasons for these attitudes, but unless you ask questions, show empathy and make the concerted effort to connect, it will continue and possibly get worse Gratitude: The state or quality of being grateful or thankful; a warm and friendly feeling in response to a favor or favors received; thankfulness. Teens and Gratitude Lack of gratitude in teens stems also from their need to be individuals Questions Are you displaying the right attitude for your kids’ to learn? Are you showing the gratitude that you want them to learn. We all get caught up in our lives and forget the most basic human needs…kindness, love, appreciation, empathy Just a reminder, remember how it feels be appreciated, loved cared about. As they saying goes, kindness is contagious Get your copy of Coach T's new book, "The Ultimate Guide to Success For Preteens and Teens.
