Description

We’d like to introduce you to a new podcast. It’s called Different. But why different?

You know how when you’re wearing sunglasses it puts a tint on everything? Or if you wear glasses you see some things in focus and others out of focus?

Well, we all have lenses on the inside of our head too. And they tint, colour and shape everything we see, think and understand.

So, on this podcast Steve Chalke and Jill Rowe are going to dive headlong into just that as they discover a new ‘meaning making’ story and embrace a fresh way of thinking about life, the universe and everything in-between.

They will talk about getting to a place where we see our lives as part of something bigger than our day-to-day experience - becoming a part of an unfolding story. Finding joy in ordinary moments, facing failure and struggle and discovering liberation and purpose.

They’ll also discuss experiencing life as a gift and learning how to live on purpose. They’ll be peering into dark nights of the soul and finding hope. And simply learning how we are here to walk each home.

We hope you enjoy these conversations – discovering a new story and embracing new thinking.

Waging Peace

Waging Peace

2025-09-0327:20

In this episode of the Different podcast, Jill Rowe talks with Steve Chalke about the importance of waging peace and not war. For that to happen, we all need to see the vital importance of really listening to others. We simply have to listen and we recognise that, in truth, we only win when we all win, we can learn to not let anger get hold of and grip us, and as the brilliant Desmond Tutu said, if we want peace, we have to talk to our enemies, not just our friends. In fact, we are invited to love our enemies. This episode feels so important for right now, we hope that you will join us in waging peace. Our title music is written and performed by Jerome Alexander (Message to Bears). This podcast is powered by Oasis. In this episode of the Different podcast, Jill Rowe talks with Steve Chalke all about the wonder of ambiguity, starting from observing a Spanish Town Square in a power cut, all the way to how we can develop the ability to find our way in the dark when we aren't feeling sure at all. So much of life is navigated in ambiguity. So together, we chat about how we can grow to not despise it, but welcome it and see it all as a creative invitation. We realize once more, the anchor of vision and see the truth that we don't need to know everything to take the next step. We just need to know enough and we also need enough foolishness to believe that we can do what needs to be done. Our title music is written and performed by Jerome Alexander (Message to Bears). This podcast is powered by Oasis. In this second part of 'Beyond the Barricades', Jill Rowe talks with Steve Chalke about standing with courage in the face of fear as we speak and stand up for justice, compassion, and inclusion.Together, we explore how power can be so enticing for all of us. And we remind ourselves that we must speak out even when our voice is shaken, shaking, and even when we think we might lose it all.Responding to the invitation to embrace fear as we seek to live love out loud. In the end, we see that courage is a muscle we can always strengthen. Acting justly, loving mercy and walking humbly. This is the path we are invited to take, and this is how we will all find our voice. Our title music is written and performed by Jerome Alexander (Message to Bears). This podcast is powered by Oasis. In this episode of the Different podcast, Jill Rowe and Steve Chalke talk about not waiting for the cavalry, but instead realising we are the ones we've been waiting for.We explore how change comes from a dedicated small band of people who stand up and work for a world they can see beyond the barricades. We think through why we believe everyone else is responsible rather than us, which is actually a huge deception. And we recognise that we all have agency and there always exists the invitation to participate in creating change. We hope this episode gives you the courage to shift, move and pivot so that we can all, all move beyond the barricades together. Our title music is written and performed by Jerome Alexander (Message to Bears). This podcast is powered by Oasis. In this episode of the Different podcast, Jill Rowe and Steve Chalke about our response to the TV series 'Adolescence'. We discuss how all young people spell love T-I-M-E.It's the most precious commodity we can ever give to a child. Along with our presence, we see that understanding what is happening physiologically in a young person helps us to know more full fully what and how we need to be in their orbit. And we see that being involved and engaged with them through our time and our presence builds a protective layer. There is a lot going on in life at the moment, both generally and in politics and globally. All of this can feel overwhelming and heavy. My name's Jill Rowe, and in this episode of the Different podcast, I talk with Steve Chalke about how we can not just make sense of things, but how we can also find our way through and be people who keep moving forward. We explore the ideas of perspective and choice and community and faith and opting always to do good. And we see how all these things can stabilise us.We can use our agency and power to do the better thing, always. Our title music is written and performed by Jerome Alexander (Message to Bears). This podcast is powered by Oasis. In this episode of the Different podcast, Jill Rowe and Steve Chalke talk about how leadership is all about the granular, and not the hype. We chat through where our model for what great leadership comes from, and what it looks like in practice, and together we reflect on some of the trappings that those who find themselves carrying the responsibility of leadership might get caught up in things like power, privilege and the temptation of perks. The reality of a Christ-centred approach to leadership is quite different. A revolution, in fact, a revolution that we believe the world really needs. Our title music is written and performed by Jerome Alexander (Message to Bears). This podcast is powered by Oasis. It's too short to miss precious moments, too short to only care about ourselves, and far too short to spend excessive amounts of time scrolling our phones. We explore why we might do these things in the first place. Even just chatting about all this stuff gave us both the chance to reflect on our own choices and what little adjustments and changes we might make in our own lives. It's always so helpful to reflect. Our title music is written and performed by Jerome Alexander (Message to Bears). This podcast is powered by Oasis. In this episode of the Different podcast, Jill Rowe and Steve Chalke talk all about being honest. This topic matters. We hope this episode begins a conversation that you will feel able to keep going with your people too.Our title music is written and performed by Jerome Alexander (Message to Bears). This podcast is powered by Oasis. In this episode of the Different podcast, Jill Rowe and Steve Chalke about what it means to be considerate. Strangely, it's a word that we don't hear or think about that often. But through their chat, we see that to consider is perhaps one of the most powerful ways to transform our way of behaving in the world. To consider the other, to pay attention to, to have our eyes on the needs of others. It really does seem that it is the simple things that are the source of the greatest revolution, that is, to love others as ourselves. Our title music is written and performed by Jerome Alexander (Message to Bears). This podcast is powered by Oasis.
