"Find Peace and Joy in the most unlikely places".

Season One

Season One of the Exploring Awareness Podcast provides listeners a dual learning opportunity. First, to learn about and, through guided meditations, experience Mindful Awareness, Being and Presence and the innate Peace, Joy, Compassion that come from this practice. Starting with the first episode and listening through to episode 62, you will increasingly understand how a Mindful Awareness perspective connects one back to the essence of being. Secondly, listeners will witness the awakening of the co-host Lisa Barry, a long-time on-air radio broadcast interviewer for her local NPR station. Witness her awakening as she questions, struggles, and then integrates these concepts and practices until her untimely death. Episode 63, grieving her death, is an example of applying Mindful Awareness to grief, with the help of David Whyte's poem, The Well of Grief. Lisa called this process a "Big Fun Journey", and although the process of awakening can be difficult, you will see that realizing the expansiveness and freedom from knowing one's authentic self transforms the day-to-day concerns of a pre-occupied mind into Presence and Being.

In this first Episode, Frank and Lisa set the stage with an interesting discussion of awareness, meditation and mindfulness, explore the question - Who Are You - and provide a brief guided awareness meditation at the end.
In this wide ranging discussion, Frank and Lisa explore the question "who are you?" This episode starts with David Whyte's poem Tilicho Lake, and discuss the astonishment when one sees the "true shape of their own face"- yet, when discussing a goal, the focus becomes on the journey of self discovery rather than the destination. We also talk a bit about awareness of thoughts. There's a transformational component to awareness and when one becomes aware of thoughts, they dissolve as the perspective towards thoughts shifts. Meditation builds your "awareness muscle"-Overthinking takes us out of the present moment and leads to reactivity. An awareness perspective allows a "response" instead of a "reaction". Meditation can be our "pilot project"  as it is done quiet peaceful setting, and this sense of awareness can carry through to our every day lives. These, and other hard to put into words concepts were discussed, we hope you enjoy and get something out of the conversation. The episode ends with a guided meditation, Mindfulness of the Breath.
In this episode Lisa and Frank talk about "identifying as" or "resting as awareness."  Frank suggests "identifying as awareness" goes back to the "who are you" question. Interesting questions arise such as, Are you your thoughts? Are you your conditioning? Are you your situation or are you the awareness of those things?  He adds that is why we are exploring awareness and meditating so we can have the realization that you can "identify as awareness"  and "rest as awareness." Resting as awareness changes everything. You're turning in and tuning in to the Awareness where stress doesn't even exist - finding what's true is the present moment right here inside!  Lisa shares a story from a book by Oriah mountain dreamer, where the author was annoyed by a questioning retreat participant, and wonders if Frank is also annoyed by her questions, but ultimately it's about what we all may be looking for on this journey, including a consideration of the unity of all beings,  concluding with the thought "act out of Love...no matter what."- from the bottom up. This episode also includes a guided Body Scan mindful awareness meditation.
In this episode, hear Frank and Lisa discuss how awareness of the breath is the first tool, or doorway for opening to awareness and consciousness. They continue to explore awareness of the breath and body, and introduce how awareness of thoughts continues one on this journey. They discuss the questions and struggles that this type of awareness brings, and how discovering your own truth may lead to a "change in lane" that leads to a different way of being lead by an innate sense of compassion, peace, joy and generosity. The episode has an awareness of thoughts guided meditation and an invitation to start a daily meditation practice.
In this episode, Frank and Lisa discuss emotions which can often include some that might make you feel uncomfortable.  We talk about how burying or pushing down some emotions could bring up thoughts or problems you weren't even aware of and lead to experiencing even more difficult emotions. We discuss how becoming aware of emotions and allowing them to be - as they are in the present moment -is ultimately an act of compassion. We introduce a tool for working with emotions, RAIN- Recognize, Allow, Investigate, Nurture with compassion. Handling emotions this way is an act of trust that requires a little bit of faith that there is another way to be. Being aware of your emotions just may help you find that  place of wisdom joy and love and compassion -in yourself- that leads to healing.
As we continue to "explore awareness"  Frank and Lisa talk about how this process leads to a "deeper knowing," or an experience of awakening.  They talk about how "mini awakenings" reflect a closer to connection to awareness.  The discussion includes the differences between what your brain tells you and what your awareness experience indicates for you and how that impacts the you move through life. Frank shares David Whyte's poem "Faith"  and how having faith in this process allows an opening to guide the direction in our lives.  Frank points out that faith is different than beliefs, adding "to believe something and have faith in something are two different things." Ultimately leading us to have faith in ourselves. The guided meditation leads to an experience of the "precious present moment".
In this episode, Frank and Lisa explore a very freeing concept - awareness of awareness. The discussion revolves around using mindfulness tools to discover that we are all connected in ways that we can't "think".  It is a "felt sense", sometimes spontaneously experienced in fleeting glimpses,  but here we take a closer look of something larger, bigger. They discuss how many religions use different words to try to express this idea, but words fall short.   You've heard that we are homo sapiens (which means the ape that is aware) – but did you know we are a sub species called homo sapien sapien- the ape that is aware that it is aware? Embedded in this categorization is a suggestion that the fullest expression of being a human is the capacity for something greater. It is only through human awareness that the universe knows that it exists. This realization opens so much space, and provides relief to know that you are more than your personality, conditions and habits.  From this comes a great sense of  joy- and ultimately the realization of the unity of all beings!  They acknowledge that this is challenging, as opening to this realization can lead to a fear of losing something you think is true, but actually opens to so much more without losing anything. Being patient and non-judgmental with yourself is a tremendous act of compassion.  Since you can't "think" this- a guided "awareness of awareness" meditation is included in this episode to facilitate this realization.
In this episode, Frank and Lisa discuss how exploring awareness is applied to fear. Our global  human community is being urgently challenged in an unprecedented way with the Corona virus, and in this episode, we learn that we have an opportunity to deal with fear in a different way. They discuss how exploring the awareness of fear may change how fear is experienced- from suffering to peace, from reacting to responding. We still need to keep up with the news and prepare to protect ourselves, but response may come from a different perspective. Fear can cause a lot of suffering, and if it in not dealt with, it can turn in to toxicity. Perhaps, with exploring awareness fear can be transformed into presence. Awareness is a place of stillness - there is no fear in awareness. We are safe in this present moment. This episode invites us to open to awareness to find that place that is safe in the present moment, to experience the joy of being, the joy that has no opposite -whatever the external conditions.
A crisis like the one we are living through with the corona-virus pandemic  provides a stark choice for how to go forward. We know what we should do, but the question is always how. In this episode, Frank and Lisa discuss how and why exploring awareness can provide a grounded place from which to operate, one that never leaves no matter what the situation. We always hear that  living in this moment could provide an answer, and this episode's guided meditation may be a helpful tool to experience that unflappable place. In finding that place, there comes a sense of relief and joy knowing there is another way, a place not being affected by anything else.  It can be covered up by thoughts, fears and stories but once you connect back to it, you realize it didn't go anywhere. It's called the "Joy that has no Opposite", or the "Peace that passes all understanding". This is not something you "think" it's something you experience- thinking clouds it over.  So despite all the turmoil in the world right now we can still find peace and joy in the most unlikely places! It may take a leap of faith that it's possible even in the midst of crisis, but what do you have to lose? Step back from the brain and try something a bit different.
Our minds can take us into the future and create all kinds of stories about what could possibly happen. Its's our hope that listening to this podcast  can  help you find another option and an opportunity to go within and find a place of calm that could be used to help others in these troubling times. Its an invitation to try something different. Frank reveals he spent a couple of years working on the Navajo Indian reservation with the Indian health service and shares a message from the Council of 13 Indigenous Grandmothers.  https://sisterhearts.blog/2018/02/08/message-from-the-council-of-13-indigenous-grandmothers/?fbclid=IwAR1QUYY4D8hfG3e4S3w1xGZxsD8vWPJW5Sak8O4r-LTRBCL48x6IbTLoCVw The conversation includes the suggestion to take a break from that feeling of dread even for just a few minutes and try something different, take a step back in awareness and see if  that may provide a way to move forward in a different lane. A quote from Byron Katie's new book A Mind at Home With Itself is shared that speaks from a place of awareness.         "The mind can never be controlled - it can only be questioned, loved         and met with understanding."   A space opens up when we become aware that our minds are creating all these scenarios- and there opens up a freedom when you can question them and just say "that's my mind doing what it does, and I love my mind because it is trying to protect me."  The realization comes when Awareness is the identity.  When you take that step back into awareness all these other things take on a different meaning.  That leads to the question: Are you yourself all these thoughts and emotions and fears or is it the awareness of those things-who you really are? It's not one of those things you can think up - it's not something you can control, but once you get a glimpse...identify with that piece then all of a sudden thoughts and fears are transformed!  Transformed into something to be aware of -transformed into presence =just like we do with  the breath.  However, it does take a decision to try it. There's a heartfulness  and a compassionate aspect when we give ourselves an opportunity to move into this deeper place.  You can start by being mindful of the breath.  One doorway to presence and awareness is to just stop and know that you're breathing,  If you know your mind is racing -who are you that knows the mind is racing? And then rest there as awareness;  The more your mind is going crazy and you know it ...the more you're aware of it.  Tap into the awareness of that and see what happens! That's the awakening. Respond from a place of wisdom - we all have that potential.
Finding Hope and Compassion In The Middle Of A Pandemic In episode 11 of the Exploring Awareness podcast Lisa Barry and Dr. Frank Anderson introduce compassion for self and others as a natural extension of our exploring awareness. Deciding to become aware of your thoughts and emotions opens a place of stillness that provides a break from all of the things your mind is trying to do.  This simple yet difficult shift represents a great act of self-compassion - as Frank puts it "your wonderful mind that's trying to protect you (takes up a lot of space)-  going to your core results in such a relief." Of course, it's not something you can make happen, but you can let it happen. This is an invitation to just try. One of the metaphors about finding the still place inside yourself is imagining the blue sky (stillness) beyond the dense clouds (thoughts and fears) to better deal with today's struggles. "There's blue sky beyond the grey skies which can be a metaphor for what we're going through right now."  Connecting to one's core takes practice, connecting to the place where innate qualities of unconditional love for yourself and for others originate. For some, this place may seem unavailable, but the invitation to exploring mindful awareness provides an opportunity to see if there is something else besides what your brain is telling you. Taking the first step is the most difficult. Feeling compassion for yourself and compassion for others then comes naturally. The suggestion is that finding that still place inside yourself which can be considered "the real place" -the present moment -place of stillness -that recognizes the struggle going on in you. The result of all this is? Awareness transforms adversity of the world into something larger -a way we can feel united, connected and a way to get through all that is happening in our world right now.  Our collective "forced presence" allows us to just be present with ourselves and gives us an opportunity to do something different. Ultimately, no matter what life experiences have done to you, what your history has done to you, what your health may have done to you...place all those things in awareness. Then the part of you that is aware is peaceful and loving, still and joyful place. As unlikely as that may seem, with a little bit of faith knowing the blue skies are behind the clouds, access to a new way of being is possible.
The pause button has been hit- the whole world is in a "Great Pause" - an unexpected period between a known past and an unknown future. In meditation, we sit in the present moment- that space where the past is gone, and the future is yet to come. In this "Great Pause" every human being in the world is being nudged into the present moment whether they like it or not. Sometimes it takes a shock like this to wake up and to do things in a different way. We have the opportunity now to realize what the present moment has to offer- a still quiet place connects us all and leads to a realization of the unity of all beings.  In that realization- there is such a relief, such a sense of freedom and spaciousness.  In this episode, Frank and Lisa discuss what this feels like, and provide a guided meditation that provides an opportunity to experience  a freedom you didn't know you had before.
In this episode, Frank and Lisa focus on Love as one of the inherent qualities of human nature. Expressions of Love are in such display during the pandemic- even staying at home is an expression of Love. Through exploring awareness, we can "know" that love is being expressed and see more clearly how Love is an inherent motivating factor in all of our lives. We learn to "know" this through meditation. The discussion includes how meditation can let us experience the "one that knows that it knows" and how there is a place before thinking that opens something new, vaster and open. The question is always HOW? If there is an intention to know this place, and a at least a sliver of faith that something else is possible, the next step is a bit of discipline and concentration. Settle in a chair and practice mindfulness of the breath and body to start and move to mindful awareness of thoughts. Start with 5 minutes per day and work your way up.   In this place, before thought, a whole new space opens- the "other side of thought". Don't think of it as another thing to do, but an opportunity to know yourself better. In this vast and open place, before thought, is a universe of "knowing" and you may being to "know" that Peace, Joy, Generosity and Love are just waiting there for you to experience. Perhaps in that place, old wounds are healed and fall away. You can't think these things up, but find them already there. A basic guided meditation is also offered to help with the concentration aspects of meditation that helps get this knowing opened up.
Where there's Love there is Joy and when there is Joy there is Peace! Frank and Lisa continue the conversation and the journey during the COVID-19 pandemic and provide a guided meditation on being aware of what connects you to a deeper place of calm. What do you connect to that bring you joy? Walking in nature, taking time to meditate? They discuss how using mindfulness techniques to explore awareness opens a place where the richness of life that can be experienced when you're present, go within and find out what's true. The discussion provides an invitation to connect to your deeper sense of calm and purpose and reveals your own personal inner guide as opposed to listening to all the conflicting and paradoxical information coming in from the outside world. In life we have many habitual, patterned ways we react to something, non helpful reaction to what's happening that cloud out that inner calm. What happens in the space "before thinking"? Inner calm is there-it is in every human being no matter what. in this discussion, learn how to connect to your inner calm. A good word to describe this inner calm is equanimity. Equanimity a bit difficult to explain but refers to a cool and quiet sense of stillness that we all can attain. It looks like calm amidst the storm, It looks like stability amongst the unstable -Solid...stable...thoughtful...clear-that's equanimity. No matter what your brain may tell you everyone has that within them.
In this episode, Frank and Lisa explore openheartedness as one of the qualities that emerges when using mindfulness techniques to explore awareness. Who would you be, if, no matter what, you could be openhearted? Issues, events, people's decisions and acting out from bias and fear can create negative thoughts that lead to a reaction of close heartedness. Today, we discuss a space "before" thoughts that is vast, open and freeing. We use the word "essence" to point to the quality that exists within that will guide us, if we let it.  When we "wake up" from thoughts, we can experience life in a very different way. We use quotes from Ram Dass, Tara Brach and Adyashanti to guide the discussion. The question is always "how"- and that's where your own personal experience with meditation and exploring awareness comes in. Meditation then doesn't become a chore, but an opportunity to experience a "special" place that opens a place for openheartedness. These words are a guide to your own personal experience of openheartedness so instead of reaction, the response is guided by unconditional love and peace and joy.
There is Wisdom in Change How to be a Cow with no Nostrils In this episode, Frank and Lisa continue exploring awareness in the context of the changing corona virus pandemic. We are all witness to a very changing lifestyle guided both by our intense desire to return to normal life, while at the same time knowing that it could be dangerous. How you move around in the world is a matter of practical concern, but from the awareness perspective, brings up the idea of impermanence. When one "takes a backward step" and looks at each situation from an objective awareness place, the changing nature and impermanence of all things becomes clear. Holding on to the past can be seen as impractical because the past is already gone, and wanting something for the future cannot be guaranteed. The present moment is for sure, and we discuss the wisdom that being present can bring. This whole situation is asking us - in a very pronounced way - to be present. Perhaps then decisions as to how to proceed can be wisdom informed instead of desire informed, wisdom informed instead of conformity informed. There is a freedom in impermanence because no longer being pulled around by thoughts of past regrets or a better future. Its kinda like being a cow with no nostrils (listen to this episode to find out what that means!) From another perspective, it can be said that "Nothing new appears until something old ceases". To get a feel for this, we read Rumi's Poem "The Guest House" The Guest House This being human is a guest house. Every morning a new arrival. A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes As an unexpected visitor. Welcome and entertain them all! Even if they're a crowd of sorrows, who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture, still treat each guest honorably. He may be clearing you out for some new delight. The dark thought, the shame, the malice, meet them at the door laughing and invite them in. Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond. — Jalaluddin Rumi, translation by Coleman Barks (The Essential Rumi) Whether or not it's good or bad how do we get to the place where we accept "what is? The only way for the world to realize it's full potential is if more people start to wake up to who they really are, and perhaps exploring awareness will guide us as to how.
Tumult continues during a global pandemic, and in the United States, a massive response of millions of people demanding change.  There is an option to make sense of this – an option that includes accessing a wellspring of inner wisdom that can inform thoughts, response and action. This inner resource isn't accessed by thoughts, because it  dwells before thoughts- or as we put it- exploring awareness of thoughts. Exploring awareness takes practice and a good way to start is by first becoming aware of the breath. Exploring awareness will open an awareness space to give us access to the place before thoughts. To go there takes a leap of faith and courage, and an intention to connect to something deeper.  With intention and practice, you my find an inner place of freedom-free from preconceived ideas, judgement, defensiveness, offensiveness, and suffering that opens way of being and moving around in the world where you one can respond to the issues of the day with strength, wisdom and love. Meditation is a great way to realize that the answer is not what you think but what you are. Thinking your way through this won't work, so a guided meditation is provided to help find that space. Your mind will resist, but there is another opportunity to find peace. A peaceful person makes a peaceful family A peaceful family makes a peaceful neighborhood A peaceful neighborhood makes a peaceful city A peaceful city makes a peaceful state A peaceful state makes a peaceful country A peaceful country makes a peaceful world A peaceful world make a peaceful universe "In this world, hate has yet to dispel hate -Only love dispels hate"
Wondering what you can do? Start with yourself! The world situation now makes finding peace and joy in the most unlikely places seem unlikely! In this episode Frank and Lisa discuss the bottom up approach to discover an inner essence that connects every human being. A grace, if you will, that unites us in something deeper. Thoughts, emotions and reactions without awareness can lead to racism, judgmentalism, dismissal, denial, and unconscious bias. Through awareness of thoughts and emotions, we can see the ideas that have been constructed through history and culture and have left an imprint, and decide for ourselves if this is consistent with our true nature. It may be painful to watch old ideas drop off, but the only way out is through. Identification with thoughts makes for a small world, opening to awareness of thoughts leads to an immense freedom that can't even be thought of, only experienced. Join us in this episode to explore another way.
Why Can't I Just Let Go? We always hear the phrase – "Let it Go". We are asked to let go of old habits, ideas  or demands and expectations that we impose on others that aren't working. It's a paradox- the part of you that's trying to let go is the same part of you that's holding on -which means you could be holding on and letting go at the same time! Sometimes, "letting go" looks like "just putting it out of your mind"-but there's a big difference between letting something go vs burying it or suppressing it which just creates more problems for yourself.  Yet trying to let go creates an unsolvable problem that sets one up for failure. Wanting, forcing and grasping can bring the opposite of what you want! Letting go is not really something you can do, but happens organically when you are completely open to accepting what's happening in the present moment and not necessarily looking for something outside of yourself. As long as you're holding on to something it doesn't go anywhere, but once you let it be - it can dissolve- it can drop off.  The invitation here is to try something different. In these podcast episodes, we use Meditation as a mindfulness tool to open to something deeper, and in the opening to something deeper you may find that the very thing you are trying to let go just falls off -it's not the same energy as trying to let go but in retrospect, falling off looks like letting go! Meditation is a tool for the discovery of your truest deepest self. It's opening to a deeper awareness that is going to allow the letting go happen without you trying Once you start identifying as awareness then there is really nothing to hold on to and nothing  to let go of -it's a different way of being so that striving or that yearning will be less and there will be less suffering for you and others. Awareness allows you to feel yourself rather than think yourself  Perhaps "Let it Go" is better said as "Let it Be" and when you let it be, those attachments and demands lose their energy.  Of course, your mind will say if I do this – who will I be, how will I get what I want, how will I get anything done? The answer to this question is within you- practice mindful awareness and maybe once you connect to your deepest and truest self THE THINGS YOU WANT WILL BE DIFFERENT-Or just maybe you will already have found what you're looking for. Try the guided meditation in this episode for a week and see what happens. Being open to what is, loving what is, starting at a place of peace, love, joy and generosity may shift the dynamic. If you can't live without these feelings, bring that to awareness as well.
Episode # 20 Finding Fulfillment is an Inside Job In this episode Frank and Lisa explore the word "fulfillment", and provide methods as to how we can connect with the sense of fulfillment. The word can have different meanings depending on your mindset. Feeling fulfilled may come from achieving something that you have striven for- a material item, a relationship, a vacation, a job- or feeling fulfilled can come from a deeper place that comes from an inner voice that may be telling you something else. This inner voice is your home, it might seem difficult to do - but it's within your power to find your home and fulfillment wherever you are and whatever is happening. Transform any issue by exercising the full potential of your fullest humanity and bring these things to awareness and then rest as awareness – being freed from swimming in the chaos results in a feeling of fulfillment. It's easy to say -and sounds good- but the philosophy of our podcast is to discuss the "how" so that anyone can have a method to connect to the deepest sense of fulfillment. Since you can't think your way through this, we provide another guided meditation - as you practice mindful awareness in meditation and in daily life, the feeling of fulfillment will naturally arise and you will notice, kind-of in retrospect, that life is more fulfilling. Ultimately its your choice- once you meditate and find your authentic self -you're home- and those things you thought would fulfill you may not have the same urgency. When you are fulfilled you might just move in the world to help other people feel fulfilled. Someone who is fulfilled with themselves is going to be a very different partner than someone who is looking to their partner for their fulfillment. If you are a parent, or in any community, the dynamic completely changes when you yourself are fulfilled and not relying on your friends, you partner or your co-workers for your fulfillment. Nagging creates a sense that love or acceptance is conditioned on acting a certain way. So many of the ways of interacting that we were taught creates tension or problems of unmet expectations. Creating a community of Love from a sense of fulfillment is much more satisfying then depending on others to meet our expectations – the very expectations that came from the false sense of fulfillment to begin with. The paradox in all of this is that you will get what you want, if what you want is coming from the place you find when you explore awareness.
