If we want to change a behaviour then the interaction needs to occur around the expected behaviour with the student you are trying to change.

Reinforcement in one of the four dimensions on the 4D framework. It is a genuine interaction with another who is meeting the expectations of that environment. If we only interact around curriculum and not the behaviour we want to see, we will not change the behaviour of the students we want to.

The skill of cueing with parallel acknowledgement, in its original form, just does not have the same impact it had in 1996 or even 2016. This does not mean you throw the baby out with the bath water; it means you need to pay attention and shift slightly the skills we used to use, with a new interaction of bounce back, to have high impact in today’s classrooms. If you don’t interact with the student who was off task they will return to similar behaviours in the future. You must interact with that student in a genuine moment of opportunity to change their behaviour. What you interact with you will get more of.

When you do any work over a period it is essential to revisit the terminology and the concepts that underpin that work. The more removed the application is from the designer, the author, the more room there is for interpretation and misinterpretation. Mob Buy-In has many applications, however, in its original format it is about seeing the groups of students in front of you to support your decision making.

Over the last 30 years of my career, I have had the privilege of being exposed to and using many coaching paradigms. The 4D framework is the evolution of this knowledge this experience and the research, I put my entire life on hold for, over a 6-year period. When we think the product we have is enough, then we are fools. Anything we do should always be under constant review, renewal when needed and replacement when the evidence tells us it is time. If you believe in the work of 4D then buckle in folks as we have a mere 54 changes to our A3 observation sheet coming in 2025. It is better, it reflects current needs of teachers and coaches to have the conversations required to create the environment in which we want to work, live, love and play.

When we talk about Follow Through, there are three considerations: The certainty, the celerity and the severity. Each plays a role in your decision making and each impacts the teaching and learning space.

Redirection is the third of the Four Dimensions. It is an extremely valid tool in a teacher’s armoury to create the supportive environment that they want to teach in. This episode covers the concepts of balance, bounce back and intentionality when using the Third Dimension of redirect.

Dimension Two is the dimension of Reinforce. These are the interactions that will change the classroom environment the quickest. While we believe that redirections change behaviour, they don’t. Redirections provide an interruption to a behaviour, but long-term change comes from setting clear expectations and then interacting with appropriate behaviours to increase repeated instances of the same. Reinforcement is a strong interaction to encourage repeated behaviours.

Dimension One is the dimension of Expect. Let’s start the Term with a review of the purpose of Dimension One and how it can have an impact on your classroom. Dimension One is the platform for all interactions, it is the clarity of expectations for the curriculum and the behaviour in your classrooms. A strong platform creates the opportunities for the interactions you want in your learning environment.

The concept of stepping in with a Green Footprint first, is not about being positive. It is about initiating an interaction for maximum output. How we step into a conversation sets the interaction up for a productive outcome or moves those we interact with away from us.

As the end of term gets closer there are a few things that we can do to reduce disruptive behaviours in classrooms and some others to support you in making it through to your last day of term. How we choose to step into our work day, show up in our staff rooms and the interactions we have with others impacts all in a school as the end of term gets closer.

There are three nice simple responses to use when you scan your environment and find it is not a product one for teaching and learning. The choice lies in the severity of the reset required and how you can step back in with a focus on teaching and learning for all students. Change the environment, the routine or the interactions- each has an investment and response trade off.

The 4D framework is about balancing how you use the Four Dimensions to create the environment that you want to be in: for work, to live, to love or to play. When we state our expectations after a period of redirection, the trick is to remove yourself from frustrating behaviour and restate the behaviours you want in that environment.

Students are just being human, and they will choose at times not follow the instructions given. If and when you use redirections, the next choice to make is how quickly you can interact with a Green footprint, to return that student to the learning.

Setting your own boundaries for active interactions, the rule of two is one of Caroline's guiding Principles to know when to interact and how to interact. When we notice anything in our classroom we start with a scan, we now have two places to go - instruct or interact.
