Description
Being “Just Dumb Enough” is all about being okay with yourself, and the situation you find yourself in, after you bring up a topic in front of a real expert.
My name is Colton Petry, I am the Host of the Just Dumb Enough Podcast, and I‘m your professional idiot.
The premise of the show is exposing the general listening audience to topics, careers, experiences, or lifestyles they may otherwise know very little about.

Nothing gets people quite as heated as elections, be it a good or bad outcome. But this isn't an isolated American experience, as so many around me might assume. This year over 64 countries and around 2 billion people will have been eligible to take part in an election of some kind.
Welcome to the Just Dumb Enough Podcast. A show that acknowledges no one is always an expert, by dispelling misconceptions with real experts.
My guest today is Sam Daley-Harris. Sam has been lobbying for voter advocacy for over four decades, and loves to educate on how we can do better than electing a total stranger to represent us with no supervision. He'll teach how to ask for what you want, get meetings with these important people, and make sure your desires aren't drowned out by so much social noise.

Let's have a say again.
Remember the difference between transactional advocacy and transformational advocacy. Don't just sign a form and hope for the best, make your voice heard.

Long ago were the days when most people had to farm just so that they could eat, and that kicked off the start of a very rough trade-off. Now, many areas of the world have an abundance of food that is mass produced, packed with preservatives and antibiotics, and engineered to be addictive to our taste buds. And while our available calories to consume has gone way up, our physical activity has dropped way down.
Welcome to the Just Dumb Enough Podcast. A show that acknowledges no one is always an expert, by dispelling misconceptions with real experts.
My guest today is Kay Loughrey. Kay has four decades of experience as a nutritionist, and struggled with food the same way many people do. She's here today to explain just how bad our eating has gotten, the impact it has on our lives, and how we can fix it without the generalized suffering of niche diets.

There are so many milestones that occur in every child's life, and so many parents who are unsure how to approach heavy topics with their little ones. So I brought in an expert who will hopefully be the next wave of Dr. Seuss stories.
Welcome to the Just Dumb Enough Podcast. A show that acknowledges no one is always an expert, by dispelling misconceptions with real experts.
My guest today is Ken Rohlf. Ken went from lawyer to children's book author after he realized how hard it would be to talk about his wife, who had passed, with his unborn grandson. I think everyone has these people in their life; the people you wish would be around to meet your kids, grandkids, nieces, nephews, etc. But Ken saw the need to ease these discussions, and now works on children's books that work just as well for the adult reading them.
This will also be the last interview with the sad backdrop for a little while. I just needed to get these out in order to help myself move on and manage my grief in some way.

Let's remember those who went before us.
I always feel bad when I make a guest cry, but I think that level of sincerity and emotion is something that we all deeply crave out in the real world. Don't be afraid to be more open, because that's the only way anyone will ever get to know the real you.
In other news... November is now here, and the ranking are as follows:
1. The United States, with Texas, Illinois, and North Carolina at the very top!
2. Scotland of the United Kingdom, dethroning England a bit.
3. Australia, with Western Australia out front. Besties in the Westies, or so I've been told.
4. Canada, with British Columbia and Ontario all tied up.
5. Ghana, just leading India.

*Trigger Warning: Death*
Saturday, October 26th, my father was pronounced dead. It was a sudden loss, and it has shaken my family profoundly. Having a history as a paramedic, I know that my way to approach grief is through working without rest. It's not healthy, and I don't recommend it for others, but it's what works for me.
This episode wasn't intended to be released for several more weeks, but the content and the massages gave me a gift: A way to help my mother through this hard time. I know you're listening Mom, and I love you.
The loss of your spouse is almost unthinkable for most people, and based on the numbers: It’s far more likely to happen to women.
Welcome to the Just Dumb Enough Podcast. A show that acknowledges no one is always an expert, by dispelling misconceptions with real experts.
My guests today are Karen Smith-Racicot, Rebecca LeChance, and Karen Justice. All three of these women lost their husbands in different ways, and have found their new lives in very different ways. You would expect this to be a universal experience, since half of all life-long relationships will experience it. However, It is multi-faceted, and there will never be a one-size-fits-all approach to preparing for it, or surviving the aftermath undaunted. Keep yourselves open to the ideas these wonderful women share, and prepare for the unthinkable with the hope that it will never be needed.

Let's work through our losses.
Editing this episode and transcribing the lessons really helped me rationalize the loss. I also highly recommend the interview Matthew Stapley and I did about Grief and Grieving if you are in the same situation ( https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/grief-grieving-with-matthew-stapley/id1588060916?i=1000553958384 ).

I don't know that I've ever hear the words "Forensic" and "Construction" used in the same sentence, outside of maybe "The forensic team is inspecting the murder at the construction site." And yet, this topic is quite passive, with no murder that I heard about.
Welcome to the Just Dumb Enough Podcast. A show that acknowledges no one is always an expert, by dispelling misconceptions with real experts.
My guest today is Samuel Bentil. Samuel is a construction dispute claims consultant, a job I honestly never knew existed until our interview. In short his job is to make sure that neither the client, nor the contractor is engaging in any shady practices to make extra money. That's commonly a concern for most people having their homes built, but becomes much more serious when the project's price is measured in billions of dollars and not thousands.
Samuel also have a super fun accent that I enjoy, and he hails from our regular top 5 country: Ghana

Now that we've talked about it, I really need these solar cells over highways and parking lots. My oh-so-pale skin hates long drives in the direct sun.

We all have those ideas that we want to see come to life: Whether it's stories for an imaginative audience, or increasing our year end sales. But so often that comes with the sharp sting of rejection, and our enthusiasm takes a real hit.

Let's figure out a way to make this happen.
There really is so much value in seeing the ways in which people think. We often get too locked in our own head and forget to see the perspective and context. Looking back, I can see plenty of times where the confusion, between where I was and where they were, led to a disagreement.
In other news, Spooky season of October is here, and the ranking are anything but ghoulish:
1. The United States, with California, Illinois, and Oregon at a narrow lead.
2. Australia, with Queensland, Capital Territory, Victoria, and Western Australia all tied somehow.
3. England of the United Kingdom.
4. Canada, with Ontario just barely ahead of British Columbia.

I did a most downloaded episode I believe for year 2, an everyone seemed to really enjoy it including me. So we're doing it again as a year 3 episode!
As with the last compilation I made, these are not necessarily my favorite episodes of the year: They are the most downloaded of the year. I think the top 3 even broke download records, so it's clear that people enjoyed them.
This is a great way to peruse topics you may have otherwise overlooked or ignored, or great starting points if you're new to the show.
I'm also super proud to say that this has been a massive year of growth with numbers doubling and tripling in most cases, along with an astounding 160 country reach and numerous top rankings in multiple countries and on several platforms.
Starting us off at number 10 is:
Bad Bosses with Jennifer Nash. We originally arranged this interview to talk about good bosses, but you all in the audience quickly decided you wanted it to be about the worst of the worst, and what's wrong with them.
I'll also throw in a little (static) so you know there's a clean little cut in the audio segments.
I can see why people found that episode a bit cathartic, but it was followed up with an interview that had most people concerned at the beginning. It was a reply to a tech specialist, done and voiced entirely by AI. At #9: The AI Reply with ChatGPT and ElevenLabs
The speaking ability of computer entities quickly found its way deeper into the minds of the audience; as we dove into the human speaking ability in #8 Polyglot Means Multilingual with Joel Dubin
But with these new languages, how were we going to find the money to travel to all these wonderful places? That's where we get #7: Becoming Wealthy with Bryan Kuderna
Needless to say: All these new skills left us all a bit stressed out. Luckily, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder came in to save the day at #6: OCD with Chris Mason
That puts OCD into perspective, but what about the ever increasing need to know about Autism? For this we turn to #5: Life with Autism with Sam Mitchell
Autism can be an isolating experience, and #4 highlighted that all of life can be lonely if done wrong. This is: Loneliness with Shila Patel
Okay… So we don't want to be lonely, right? Then why not find someone or something we cannot live without? Turns out that leads us to #3: Codependency with Dr. Sarah Michaud
Alright! So we can't be lonely, AND we can't be codependent… Is there anything else to look out for, Colton? Yes, there is, my lovely audience member; it's #2: Narcissistic Personality Disorder with Danu Morrigan
Wow… with such a heavy list, surely the number one must have been an all encompassing downer, right?
No! In fact, #1 was almost exclusively uplifting: Providing valuable insights to how you can find passion and purpose in your life right now! It's Vitamin P with Corey Poirier
Listener questions?:
“Do you plan to focus on any topics more in the future?” -Mikah
Rocky asks, "You had a recent announcement about a medical situation. Can you tell us more?"
“How's listenership?” - Deborah
“Did something happen to make you happier?” - Odila
Favorite Reviews or Emails:
“Dear JDE podcast,
Thank you for releasing such unique and fascinating content. Not being largely into podcasts, I find myself oddly intrigued with what the next episode will dive into.
Just a few weeks ago I listened to one where you had a sports related guest, they mentioned how physical activity such as running helps the mind from overthinking. Because you're so physically exhausted, you can't think deep enough to get overwhelmed in the moment. Being the fool I am. I translated this to intensely jogging on a break later that night to the point of being uncomfortable. Later, a co-worker was kind enough to invite me on their evening strolls and that was a much more enjoyable distraction.
Sincerely, another dumb fan.”
“Hello! Huge fan of the show, just wanted to send some. Compliments your way. Live, laugh, love babes! Cheers!” - Leo Velour
I love hearing from listeners, even if it's just for them to say hey or share a moment.
Now for just a little ego boost, let's look at some public reviews of the show:
“I love this podcast. I always learn something. I've been listening for some time now and was fortunate to be a guest last year. Keep up the good work, Colton.” - Dr. Robin Hall
“Colton Petry's Just dumb enough. Podcast is, of course, quite smart. All of his shows and guests are wide-ranging and equally fascinating. I find most shows with an international following such as this one. Are the ones to stalk. This one's a keeper.” -Best Things Ever
“Colton ain't no dummy, He's a masterful interviewer who creates the best conversations that you just don't want to end.” - Jodi
Top 10 Countries:
United States, led by New York, Oregon, California, Texas, and Illinois.
England and Scotland of the United Kingdom.
Australia’s own New South Wales and Victoria.
Canada, with Ontario and British Columbia out front.
Ghana, making a huge statement as a regular top 5 this year!
New Zealand
Ireland
Germany
South Africa
India
All 10 has routine time in the top of their charts, there was only about a 2% difference between #6 and #10, and #11 was even closer.
Thank you all again for hanging out with me and my wonderfully dumb show for another year. I hope to have even more fun topics and wild knowledge for you in Year 4!

Art can be such a fickle endeavor, most often requiring years or training, practice, and experience. But finally, we've found an art form where all of those things are more of a hindrance than a benefit.
Welcome to the Just Dumb Enough Podcast. A show that acknowledges no one is always an expert, by dispelling misconceptions with real experts.
The show will be turning three years old on Friday! I'm hoping to get a special little year 3 episode out, and i would love to feature comments, questions, or reviews on that episode. Send whatever you've got to DumbEnoughPodcast@Gmail.Com
My guest today is Tracy Latz. Tracy is many things, with many very impressive degrees, but she's most proud of her work with Entura Art. It's a type of drawing or painting that require the artist to be blindfolded and unaware of the artwork unfolding in front of them. This is perfect for people like me who can't understand anatomy, perspective, or color theory.
It also leans more towards the side of the audience that love psychics, mediums, and other unusual studies; because it touches on a lot of them from the view of a clinical psychiatrist.

Let's finally make meaningful art!
I love that all of this can be done, very easily, for less than $5. I went down to the nearby dollar store, bought two huge sheets of thick paper to cut up, a bucket of bright colored chalk, and a sleep mask for basically pocket change. I'm tempted to do some and post them on the Instagram, but I'd love to see and even post Entura artwork done by the audience.
In other news, September is creeping towards an end, so here's the updated rankings:
1. The United States, with New York, Texas, and Oregon leading the charge.
2. England of the United Kingdom.
3. Australia, with Victoria now holding a small lead over New South Wales.
4. Canada, with Ontario way out front.

My guest today is Andrew Kadar. Dr. Kadar is a fan of the show with over four decades of work as an anesthesiologist. Despite all of this he missed his own heart disease diagnosis until it nearly killed him. He's with us today to explain heart disease a bit, tell us some risk factors, and ultimately prove that his situation was not as unique as you might think.

Side note, I've had multiple family members now actually require heart surgery over the years, and even a few that have passed away from untreated conditions, so I'm trying to stay very aware of my own risk. I would hope you're all doing the same, keeping yourselves in good health for a long time to come.
In other news, September is well underway, so here's the updated rankings so far:
1. The United States, taking back first place thanks to New York, Texas, and Illinois.
2. England of the United Kingdom, rocketing back up the list.
3. Australia, with Victoria now holding a small lead over Queensland.
4. Canada, with Ontario maintaining a healthy lead.
5. Ireland... tied with Ghana! What a race!

I just wanted to put out a quick announcement that there won't be an episode this week.
I've been dealing with a serious medical condition and just needed to prioritize it this time. I hope you all understand, and there will be a new episode next week as scheduled.

There's this prevailing thought that immigration has to be from your home country to the other side of the world, but our expert today shows that sometimes: Those are the easier types of moving.
Welcome to the Just Dumb Enough Podcast. A show that acknowledges no one is always an expert, by dispelling misconceptions with real experts.
My guest today is Ilona Seddik. Ilona made several big moves in her life, going from the arctic circle, to central Russia, and then to the United States. Its a fascinating story with all kinds of seemingly insurmountable obstacles, but Ilona shares all of the good and the bad with us. Shockingly, Ilona has only been speaking English for two years, and yet it's far better than most people I have met with ten years of English as a second language. 2. The United States, holding second place thanks to Ohio, Texas, and Massachusetts.

My guest today is Raymond Wiggins. Dr. Wiggins not only shares a last name with the greatest mind in science fiction, he is also recognized by US Governor Greg Abbott. Call him a doctor, a dentist, or a surgeon; just don't call him uninformed. Raymond breaks down a bunch of highly technical research to spoon feed us the whole truth on what he has seen inside this very thick data.
I do want to be up front in saying I'm not taking a pro or anti stance here. My job is to ask all the questions that an audience might want to know, and to keep my opinion largely to myself. Let's publish our own stories and be proud that we finished!
There's something about redneck wizard that will make me laugh every time, and I think it's partially the mental image of Harry Potter with a shotgun, and how exactly the "magic" makes things disappear.
In other news, August is chugging along and the rankings have updated just a little:
1. The United States, still led by New York, California, and Illinois.
2. England of the United Kingdom.
3. Canada, still barely led by Ontario, with British Columbia just behind.
4. Australia, with New South Wales now leading Victoria by two listeners.
5. Ghana, once again overtaking New Zealand.
That's it for this week! Have a great week, a great weekend, and I'll see you all back here next week for another new episode!

I love writing for my own enjoyment, but many people do it for a living. Some of these people write a dozen books a year, only to put someone else's name on it.
Welcome to the Just Dumb Enough Podcast. A show that acknowledges no one is always an expert, by dispelling misconceptions with real experts.
My guest today is Doug Crowe. Doug founded and runs a company specializing in "ghostwriting". It's not journalism for the dead, although that would also be super cool, it's writing out books and novels for people who have a story and money, but no extra time. These ghost writers work tirelessly to ensure that every book they touch can reach a wider audience and have a meaningful impact.

Let's either start writing, or start getting paid for our writing!
It seems almost counter intuitive to be a career writer who never gets credit for their own work, but considering the average book sales topping out before you sell 300 copies: It is actually much more profitable to write for people who already have money and a story.
In other news, August is now here and the rankings have updated just a little:
1. The United States, led by New York, Illinois, and California.
2. England of the United Kingdom.
3. New Zealand.
4. Canada, led by Ontario, with British Columbia just behind.
5. Australia, with Victoria now leading New South Wales.
Ghana did beat New Zealand in a last minute victory for July.

As a global culture obsessed with cults, we know very little about what it's truly like to be in one; much less what it takes to escape and start a normal life for yourself.
Welcome to the Just Dumb Enough Podcast. A show that acknowledges no one is always an expert, by dispelling misconceptions with real experts.
My guest today is Gabriel Milon. Gabriel was born into a very famous Christianity based cult, and by the time he tried to make a normal life: He had to rebuild who he was from the ground up. It's not all black cloaks and daggers with human sacrifice, but it is an absolutely enlightening and engaging story, so stick around!

Let's be careful with who we call Grandpa!
This story of escape and a successful life after is really something that makes me feel good and hopeful, but for as much as we touched on: There is hours more content about the darkness and depravity behind the Children of God cult. Honestly, I don't think there is a solid reason for this show to dive into the worst of the worst. If you found this episode entertaining, use it as a springboard to seek out other shows like "Last Podcast on the Left" who did a full five part series on the inner workings.
In other news, July is almost over and the rankings have updated just a little:
1. The United States, now led by New York, California, and Texas.
2. England of the United Kingdom.
3. Canada, led by Ontario, with British Columbia trying to catch up last minute.
4. Australia, with New South Wales holding a lead, and Victoria trailing behind.
5. Ghana, overtaking New Zealand this week. It's a tight race as we close up the month in a few days.

I think the phrase "I'm a little OCD" has been said by most of the people on the planet at some point in time, but it's truly understood by very few. Our expert today will explain why no one has ever been just a little bit OCD.
Welcome to the Just Dumb Enough Podcast. A show that acknowledges no one is always an expert, by dispelling misconceptions with real experts.
My guest today is Chris Mason. Chris struggled with obsessive compulsive disorder for decades before finding a way out. He's here to share what the disorder actually is, how it manifests, and the path he found to escape it.

Let's try to do an intro!
The amount I learned about OCD in this interview really didn't sink in until I heard it all again while editing. So if there are topics you've enjoyed, go back and re-listen to get even more out of it.
In other news, July is rolling onward and the rankings have updated a little:
1. The United States, now led by New York, Texas, and Pennsylvania.
2. England of the United Kingdom.
3. Canada, with Ontario widening their lead.
4. Australia, with New South Wales holding a lead, and Victoria and Queensland both desperately trying to overtake them.
5. New Zealand, overtaking Ghana.

Did you know that legally speaking: Only one group of individuals in a Non Profit Organization cannot make a profit? That seems wrong, but it's just one of the many things which surprised me in talking to our expert today.
Welcome to the Just Dumb Enough Podcast. A show that acknowledges no one is always an expert, by dispelling misconceptions with real experts.
Sorry for the delay in episode from Monday to Tuesday, my original episode had some major audio problems that require more attention.
My guest today is Mickey Desai. Mickey is a podcaster and non profit expert who has served on several board of directors, and now gives advice to those who are working in or entering the space. I definitely came away from this one with a whole new view on just how NPOs function, and the challenges some
of them face.

Let's work for free... maybe.
It seems so unusual that a board member of a potentially large company cannot get paid, but I feel like it has to be that way in order to keep any honesty in the system.
In other news, July is rolling onward and the rankings have updated a little:
1. The United States, Still led by New York, Texas, and Oregon.
2. England of the United Kingdom, taking back the number 2 spot.
3. Canada, with British Columbia closing in on the throne-holding Ontario.
4. Australia, with New South Wales holding a lead, and Victoria bumping the country up a spot.
5. Ghana, carefully holding a lead over New Zealand.

Would you say you're in the top 30% of happy people, the bottom 20% of unhappy people, or somewhere in that middle 50%?
Welcome to the Just Dumb Enough Podcast. A show that acknowledges no one is always an expert, by dispelling misconceptions with real experts.
My guest today is Teresa Greco. Teresa is a woman of many careers from magazines to counseling, with a heartfelt specialization in helping people to find happiness. She's here today to show how she found her way from the bottom 20 to the top 30, and what that did for her life.

1. The United States, now led by New York, Texas, and Oregon.
2. Canada, with Ontario a crazy distance out front.
3. England of the United Kingdom.
4. Ghana. Who have quickly found themselves top 5 regulars.
5. Australia, with New South Wales barely keeping them on the board.
