Welcome to episode 7 of Mind Bloom!
In this episode, Marina Gee, your host, is visited by, not one, but two very special guests.
One is my friend Clare who accepted the challenge of calling in to Mind Bloom and sharing with the audience what is was like to be in her shoes as she went in for a breast biopsy, the second in just a few days. She'll give us a detailed account of what *really* happens when your breast tissue is aspirated for a sample of those suspicious cells. Does it hurt? How long does it take? She'll have an answer to all of your questions.
My feature guest this week is Linda Jordon. She is a force to be reckoned with, as well as an uplifting role model, and a staunch advocate for knowledge and information in the face of a breast cancer diagnosis and a double mastectomy. For more on this, look for Breast Cancer Angel Network, in the notes below. Linda is, herself, a breast cancer survivor and her story is one of agency and intelligence, of courage and determination, but also of faith and love for the family.

Welcome to episode 57 of Mind Bloom, your podcast that's like yoga but for the mind.
I'm your host, Marina Gee, and this week we're talking about Toxic Positivity and how you can stave it off from your life.
For as long as I can remember, some people in my life have urged me to "think positive," and “be more positive.” But what does that even mean? If we don’t do some inner work and don’t find out where our negativity comes from or how to overcome its root issues, then positivity will just be another word with no significance attached to it; nothing more than temporary relief which keeps us trapped within this vicious cycle of self-pitying and unproductive thoughts. I have a different interpretation of positivity. By positivity, I mean authentic and empathetic openness. Not to be confused with "toxic positivity."
Toxic positivity is, I think, an overuse of “positivity” and an oversimplification that lacks the true depth of what's going on within us. Toxic positivity is a misguided and shallow interpretation of our emotions, it ignores our complex make-ups, and it limits us from exploring the potential for growth within ourselves.
This notion that we should “stay positive” no matter what comes up over and over again, especially on social media. We're being told, from an early age and, especially, as women, to ignore our negativity because it doesn't serve us, or that we need to be positive if we want to achieve our goals in life.
There's no doubt that the self-help industry has latched onto this idea as a major life-saver. And social media took the ground running. It’s so common now to witness someone share a difficult time on social media and see the post inundated with “positive” comments, such as “you got this” or “you’ve done it before, you can do it again.”
If someone you know shares a challenging moment, think before commenting and continue listening.

Welcome to episode 56 of Mind Bloom, your podcast on all things mental health through breast cancer.
I'm your host, Marina Gee, and this week we're talking about the Five Pillars (I like to call them the five seeds) to a flourishing life.
The first self-improvement book I ever read (very sceptically, I should say) was Melody Beattie’s Codependent No More. I cannot describe to you the amazement, the perplexity, the a-ha moments I experienced while reading Beattie’s book for the first time. To this day, I come back to it periodically, for a refresher. Maintenance is important, as we tend to forget how to best love ourselves.
In this self-discovery journey of mine, I learned that our emotional wellness relies on five pillars. These may vary slightly from person to person but, generally, we all agree that a flourishing life needs a balanced degree of: Food, Sleep, Movement, Emotional and Interpersonal realms. Listen on to find out more about these.

Welcome to episode 55 of Mind Bloom, your podcast on all things mental health through breast cancer.
I'm your host, Marina Gee, and this week we're talking about Facebook ads (or any other social media ads, for that matter) and how they got us working for their companies instead of the otehr way around. As breast cancer previvors and survivors, we have a story to tell and we need social media to share it with others. But the grind and the barriers keeping us practically invisible among the amount of competitors make us resort to practices that actually work against us, instead of the other way around.
I'm ecstatic to share with you the blog article Aviva Jewel has written for the Mind Bloom Journal. "What to Pack for a Mastectomy?" is one of her best, most insightful texts (and she's authored a ton of beautiful ones, believe me).
I've just released, literally hours ago, my first book (actually a working book and a journal) called The Thriving Trail. It's a whole lot of (new) habit tracking activities, journaling prompts, and a ton of bonus materials, covering fifty beautifully designed pages. It's also entirely free. Welcome to episode 54 of Mind Bloom, your podcast on all things mental health through breast cancer.
I'm your host, Marina Gee, and I'm glad to be back from a 2-week break in which I moved from a 2-month stay in South Carolina to an indefinite stay in Connecticut. Don't ask. But if you really want to know, check out episodes 46 and 47. Quick hint, it has to do with my immigration status in the US.
I'm proud to share with you that my friend Aviva Jewel (https://www.instagram.com/avivajewel/) is writing a series of articles for Mind Bloom's blog. Our friendship is a great example of synergy and interdependence so please go check her work with breast cancer awareness and motivational writing on her Instagram account.

Welcome to episode 51 of Mind Bloom, your podcast on all things mental health and breast cancer.
I'm your host, Marina Gee, and this week, I celebrate 51 weeks of podcasting and I call your attention to Mind Bloom's first anniversary on June 10th. I have a few surprises lined up so stay tuned for more.
Because of May Mental Health Awareness Month, I thought I'd give you my best description of what depression felt like to me in 2008, when I was diagnosed with clinical depression, after months of not eating and not getting out of bed.

Welcome to episode 49 of Mind Bloom, your podcast on all things mental health through breast cancer.
I'm your host, Marina Gee, and this week, I'm giving you more updates on my emotional and financial (yikes) status: it's all so rocky due to all the upheaveal of late March.
If you were not aware, a lot has happened in the past four weeks:
- My green card self-petition was approved;
- I moved out of NYC (temporarily) and am now exploring the south of the country -- Florida, the Carolinas next, then perhaps Atlanta, GA;
- As a result of seeing my green card approved, I now need to wait between 3-6 months to get a work authorization, without which I can't legally work in the country. Tumultous and exciting times, for sure. A lot of you came out to my rescue in so many different ways: emotional support, financial help, a motivational pep talk. As always, I am in awe of the power of friendship and community, and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. If you would like to help me stay afloat the next couple of months (I have been unable to work since May 2020, due to my immigration status), please consider contributing to my Green Card Relief Fund on GoFundMe: https://www.gofundme.com/f/greencardfund
