5 SIGNS OF A PSYCHOLOGICALLY SAFE PERSON discusses the concept of psychological safety coined by Amy Edmondson, the Novartis Professor of Leadership and Management at Harvard Business School. Professor Edmondson defines psychological safety as “a shared belief that the team is safe for interpersonal risk taking.”  This message applies her concept to personal relationships for survivors of narcissistic abuse and talks about some of the ways survivors can set themselves up for deep healing and positive health outcomes by recognizing the signs of psychologically safe people. This message touches on the importance of discernment in the aftermath of narcissism exposure with regard to the individuals a survivor chooses to associate with as well as the environment(s) the survivor chooses to occupy which play a key role to the survivor's recovery process. COERCIVE CONTROL: THE NARCISSIST’S WEAPON OF CHOICE is a breakdown of Coercive Control, the subtle, insidious of psychological abuse favored by narcissist’s seeking to subjugate their targets. “Coercion is an act or a pattern of acts of assault, threats, humiliation,  and intimidation or other abuse that’s used to harm, punish or frighten the victim.” “Controlling behavior is a range of acts designed to make a person subordinate and/or dependent by isolating them from sources of support, exploiting their resources and capacities for personal gain, depriving them of the means needed for independence, resistance and escape and regulating their everyday behavior.” Forensic Criminologist Dr. Jane Monckton Smith describes Coercive Control as the most significant predictor of domestic homicide. She also cites ‘gaslighting’, a form of psychological manipulation aimed to make the target question their reality, as the hallmark of Coercive Control. SCAPEGOATING IN NARCISSISTIC FAMILIES is about how children are assigned roles in dysfunctional families where one or both of the parents may have a personality disorder and how this can affect Adult Children of Narcissists. In families where one or both of the parents have Narcissistic Personality Disorder, it's common for a child who questions the worldview of the Narcissist to be scapegoated and targeted for emotional and sometimes physical about. One of the distinguishing features of the abuse experienced by the scapegoat child is that they are gaslit by a caregiver who questions their reality. They are also triangulated and smeared by the narcissistic parent(s) among their siblings and other relatives until they submit to the Narcissist's authority. Scapegoating is bullying of the child within their own family unit therefore the scapegoat child grows up in an environment that is psychologically unsafe. They are often ridiculed and rejected within their own family unit. The abuse they experience at home conditions them to have a dangerous tolerance for aggressive behaviors which they have been taught to call love. This can erode the ability of someone who was scapegoated in childhood to recognize the coercive and controlling behaviors that lead to domestic violence and narcissistic abuse in their relationships as adults. In Episode 21 of the Narcissistic Abuse Rehab Podcast, we delve into the topic ‘Julie Levine: A Coercive Control Advocate Battles A Rare Form of Cancer,’ and the disturbing similarities between Julie and Catherine Kassenoff's experiences of coercive control, child custody in the Westchester Family Court, and adverse health outcomes. Like Catherine, Julie has allegedly suffered from years of cruel post-separation abuse from her ex-husband, Robert Levine, President of Food Direct, whose treatment of Julie was found to be "cruel and inhuman" by the court. After Julie's escape, she says Robert has withheld the financial judgement she won 20 years ago and made good on his promise that she would be forever estranged from her children, Jared and Jason. Julie has spent the last two decades advocating for survivors. However after decades of stress and heartache, she was diagnosed with MPN (Myeloproliferative neoplasms), a rare blood cancer. We analyze how biases in the family court system allegedly allowed Allan to use a psychological theory that has been discredited and debunked by the American Bar Association, the American Psychology Association, and the UN to gain sole custody and wage an endless campaign of psychological terror that ended in tragedy. #IAmCatherineKassenoff EPISODE OVERVIEW - Catherine Kassenoff's story - Post-separation abuse - Parental Alienation Syndrome (PAS) - The patholigization of women in the family court system - DARVO: Definition + Mechanics - Vexatious litigation - The Privilege of Rage - Case Studies: Tina Turner, Amber Heard, Angelina Jolie - The commodification of child custody disputes - Meta-patriarchal violence - Jennifer's Law - The link between PTSD and Depression Comorbidity and Female Mortality - Child mortality in child custody disputes - Coercive control + femicide - UN Special Rapporteur Reem Alsalem’s Statement LINKS + RESOURCES - Amy Polacko’s Official Website - https://www.freedomwarrior.info - Wakefield, M (2023, February 18). ‘PTSD + Depression Comorbidity Increase Risk of Mortality In Women.’ https://www.narcissisticabuserehab.com/ptsd-and-depression/ - Statement by Reem Alsalem, Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women + Girls, Its Causes, and Consequences, 53rd session of the Human Rights Council.
