In this episode, Keith talks through some ways that principals can connect with principals and other school leaders locally, regionally, and nationally.     Organizations and Resources Mentioned In This Episode: Join the P3 Mailing List The KDE Summit - Executive Summary - Recordings on the KDE Media Portal UKNextGen #KyGoDigital Twitter KyGoDigital Youtube Channel EdCamp Shelby County Schools Eminence Schools - Eminence School Visit Form KASA Summit Learning One excellent resource for connecting with other principals that I did not mention in this episode is the Regional Cooperatives.  Our state cooperatives not only offer regional professional learning opportunities, but also provide MANY opportunities for principals to connect with one another.  Links to the cooperatives can be found here.    Please contact Keith with any questions, concerns, or suggestions for the P3 Podcast.  keith.griesser@education.ky.gov

Episode 9: The Purple Star Award Program

In this Episode, Keith talks with Sarah Jemison - the Program Coordinator for the Purple Star Program and Brigadier General (Retired) Steve Bullard - the Executive Director for the Kentucky Commission on Military Affairs about the Purple Star Award Program that recognizes and assists schools who make a special effort to support students of military personnel and the special challenges they face.   Links: The Purple Star Program Bio for Sarah Jemison Bio for Brigadier General (Retired) Steve Bullard The P3 Website Purple Star Award is a state-sponsored recognition for individual schools’ dedication and support of military-connected youth.  The Program started in 2016 in Ohio as a result of conversations with veterans, educators, military family members, students, service members and others about ways schools can better serve military students and their families. The Purple Star Award designation lets military parents know, whether they are on active duty or in the National Guard and Reserves, that a school is dedicated to helping their child gain the educational skills necessary to be college-, workforce- and life-ready. According to a 2020 evaluation report by the Military Child Education Coalition, 77% of Military parents whose children attended a Purple Star School reported that their children had a satisfactory to very satisfactory socio-emotional experience compared with only  54% of military children at non-Purple Star schools. The program is supported by the US Department of Defense, Military Child Education Coalition, and the Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission, and currently, 33 states implement the program in their schools and school districts. Vision:   Every military-connected youth in Kentucky receives what they need to succeed. Mission: Instill a sense of connection and strengthen resilience within Kentucky’s military- connected youth. Goals: Create and sustain a statewide support system within schools and communities that work together to build resilience and support for military-connected youth in Kentucky. Increase protective factors to help prevent substance use and behavioral health challenges among military-connected youth in Kentucky. Partner with schools and communities to foster diverse, inclusive, and supportive environments for military-connected youth and families. Educate the schools and community on the challenges faced by military families

Episode 13 - The Impact Survey: From Gut Punch to Growth Tool with Eric Thornsbury

About This Episode: Eric Thornsbury is the principal at Tates Creek Middle School in Lexington, KY.  In this episode, Eric and I discuss his process for collaborating with his staff using the Impact Survey questions to create a rubric that clearly defines the terms in an effort to get everyone, staff and administration team, on the same page.  Eric told me outside of the interview, "Keith I have to admit that for a long time I was hurt, put off, and even had a vindictive mindset when I saw the results of these Working Conditions Surveys, but then I dug in and found out that there was so much room for interpretation from one person to the next.  I needed to know what they (the teachers) really wanted and we needed to drill down deeper than the survey questions to really figure it out.  Through this process there have been quite a few realizations for our admin team. There have also been many realizations by our teachers as they talk to each other about what constitutes feedback, what frequency is realistic for each category, and by determining how the school defines various terms within the questions of the survey.  This is all still a work in progress, but it's been very much worth the time; not to just have a better survey score, but to have these important conversations."    Resources Tates Creek Rubric with Teacher Responses (please use this as an example of work you might do with your staff, not as a rubric to implement in your school as written.  Principal Thornsbury wanted me to be clear that this is a process that must be done WITH teachers, not to them.)
