You know your body better than anyone else. So, when it comes to your health, you’re the best person to communicate your health needs. The problem is that when you are sick and dealing with a serious health issue it can be incredibly overwhelming to be the one to call the shots when it comes to your health. In this podcast Catrina and Janette share their experiences navigating the world of health care in Canada. They get real about what it takes to get the support you need and provide some of their personal tips on how to be your own health advocate. Key learnings shared today: 1. Walk into your appointment with a specific goal. Just as you’d show up to a job interview primed to discuss your resumé and career objectives, you should arrive at medical appointments armed with your health history and goals. 2. Keep track of all health history. From vaccines to surgeries, pharmaceutical recommendations and tests approved or denied - keeping a folder with all of your health history in one place is super valuable to health practitioners, especially if you are seeing more than one. 3. Know your rights and exercise them. You have the right to a second opinion! Every province and territory has laws around patient rights, which you can find on your government’s website.4. Bring someone with you. Wing-people aren’t just for the bar scene. Sometimes it is hard to advocate for yourself, especially when sick. A support person can help take notes on what the doctor is saying as well as help explain your symptoms. Have other tips that you've found useful while navigating the health care system? Let us know! Have you ever noticed a direct connection between your mental state and the health of your skin? Or your diet and your skin? Our skin is often an outward clue to what is happening in our body and has a cyclical effect; our wellbeing impacts our skin and our skin impacts our wellbeing. The pain, anxiety, insecurity and frustration that comes with changes to our skin can be really damaging to our mental health and our mental health can impact the changes that we see on our skin. This episode provides insight on how our inner workings (hormones, stress, lifestyle) can show up on our skin and what we can do to address it. Although this conversation is geared towards folks with ovaries, the tips discussed can be applied to any and all individuals.Follow Dr. Filza Swalah:@drfilzaswalah https://drfilzaswalah.com/Please continue to rate, review, subscribe and share this podcast; we are so grateful for your support.Follow us @tableforthreepodcast_ , Catrina @consciousfitness_, Janette @janettemerry_ and email us at tableforthree.ymapodcast@gmail.com for all guest and sponsorship inquiries.Thank you to our partners of the podcast: Veeva: They are dedicated to providing comprehensive supplements for lasting relief from stress, anxiety and sleep disorders. Sleep... It turns out it's real important. So many of us are sleep-deprived. Whether you are a shift-worker, have nighttime anxiety or just general restlessness, being under-slept can have a pretty disastrous impact on your health and wellbeing. It's not all bad news, though. We welcome Chelsea De Colle (CNP, specializing in sleep) to the podcast to discuss the importance of sleep, the effects from not having it, supplements that might help and how to improve your sleep hygiene in simple, easy-to-do steps. We talk about whether or not you can "catch up on sleep," how being sleep deprived can make you feel, and why we need to hold our sleep sacred now more than ever.Sleep well :)Please continue to rate, review, subscribe and share this podcast; we are so grateful for your support.Follow Chelsea: @chelseadecolle_nutritionhttps://chelseadecolle.com/Follow us @tableforthreepodcast_ , Catrina @consciousfitness_, Janette @janettemerry_ and email us at tableforthree.ymapodcast@gmail.com for all guest and sponsorship inquiries.Thank you to our partners of the podcast: Veeva: They are dedicated to providing comprehensive supplements for lasting relief from stress, anxiety and sleep disorders. It takes a lot of courage to acknowledge that you need support. Today on the podcast, we are talking about therapy. We've both come up against the resistance of accessing therapy; it's hard to let down the walls that we've built up for so long to protect ourselves. We share our experience with that resistance, including what we love about it and how it feels, what we've found challenging and how it's changed us. We know the first step can be overwhelming, so we also break down how to start the process of getting therapy (how to find someone and reach out to them) and what the first session might look like.At the end of the podcast we share what we are currently loving right now—including Janette's "bluces" (???). Do you ever look back on your life and think about all the events and circumstances that had to happen to make you who you are? Sometimes looking to the past is scary and for many of us, we avoid it. This week we invited Jasmine Price to the table to discuss creative living, mental health, and working on social media as a full-time job. Jasmine's perspective of the wellness space online is refreshing and her openness about her life and mental health is something that we can all benefit from. In this episode Jasmine helps us take a peek behind the curtain of content creation for social media. She shares with us the pros, the cons, and how she balances her need to create while also supporting herself. She reminds us that following your passions can open doors that you never knew existed. You will hear in her voice that Jasmine has a calm, centred, presence, and she deeply cares for those around her. She is incredibly open about her past and practices deep gratitude for the life events that have made her who she is today. This conversation is a great reminder to explore all the facets that make you who you are and to not be afraid of looking to the past. We have all experienced going through hard times, and Jasmine is a wonderful example of using her past to fuel her future.
