Tiffany Aching’s first name means “Land Under Wave” in the old tongue, and the Chalk was indeed once under the sea. In fact, it’s the uncounted billions of tiny sea creatures whose remains comprise the chalk that gives the region its name.Today’s Pratchips takes a three-minute look at this unique area of the Disc.Beginning on Saturday September 4th, the previous week’s Pratchips, and the regular episode, will be available on our YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCh2HGerNeQ9kkv3WvZnyzVQBeginning Sunday September 5th, all Pratchips episodes for the coming week will be available to all Patreon supporters (at whatever level) and all members of our Discord community, Friends of Medieval Gnome Productions. Our Patreon page may be found at https://www.patreon.com/user?u=21210045&fan_landing=trueYou can join our Discord community by searching for it on the Discord home page, or by clicking here: https://discord.gg/kdr5SWnUPPEmail us at www.medievalgnome@gmail.com. The steam engine was first developed in Ephebe. It was first used in a boat. Then it powered a tank, which was sabotaged and thus never went in to battle. (Thank you, History Monks.) It’s thus both an item, in the form of a technological advancement, and a concept, in the form of “Hey look what I invented. We can use it to make people’s lives easier” morphing into “Hey, look what I built! We can use it to kill people more efficiently!” This never happens on the Roundworld. Think of Ephebe as the Discworld analogue of Ancient Greece. Especially the many-gods and the many-old-men-in-togas philosophers part. Ephebe plays a major role in both Small Gods and Pyramids. Come to think of it, I believe it pops up in Eric, too. In Small Gods Ephebe has the misfortune of being conquered by the Omnians—for a while. After they reconquered their city, the Ephebeans led the coalition which invaded Omnia. The steam engine is actually invented in Small Gods. But that’s a thing for Thursday’s episode. Don’cha thingk? Vorbis is a Deacon in the Church of Om. He is head of the Quisition, and, as you might imagine, not a very nice man therefor. He has ambitions for more temporal power, as well as for complete control of the Omnian church. He doesn’t reckon on the novice Brutha, though—nor on the Great God Om manifest as a small, one-eyed tortoise with memory issues. That’s too bad, because together the novice and the turtle will scuttle Vorbis’ plans because, well, the Turtle does Move. Thanks for popping in for some Pratchips! We love all you guys. Brutha is a large, illiterate novice who nevertheless has an eidetic memory (think photographic memory on steroids.) For this reason he is selected by the Deacon of the Omnian church, Vorbis, as part of a plan to conquer Ephebe. As we will see in Pratchips 74, this is because Vorbis is not a nice person. But, all the best plans, and that. Vorbis ends up comatose, with Brutha hauling him across the terrible Omnian desert. Brutha ends up as the Chosen One—to be the 8th Prophet of Omnianism, that it. And the Great God Om ends up making the trip to and from Ephebe with Brutha, and learning some compassion along the way. That has a lot to do with the fact that Om is currently manifest in the form of a small, one-eyed tortoise, and he can’t remember how to change back. He can’t remember much else about his past as a Great God, in fact, but he is desperate to ensure that he doesn’t become a Small God. Thanks for popping in for some Pratchips! We love all you guys. King Teppic, speaking through the high priest Dios, decrees that Teppic’s father shall be entombed in a pyramid twice the size of any other ever built. Thus the Great Pyramid is conceived.Built in just six weeks using paracosmic architecture, the pyramid is just too big. It wrenches the kingdom of Djelibeybi 90 degrees through space-time and cuts it off from the Disc. It’s up to the new king Teppic to use the skills he learned in the Assassins Guild in Ankh-Morkpork to set things right by… inhuming the Great Pyramid? Yikes. Djelibeybi—literally “child of the Djel”—is 7,000 years old. It is a 3 mile-wide, 150 mile-long kingdom that follows the course of the Djel river. It is a place of pyramids, alligators, and tradition. It is the setting for events which rend the fabric of space-time, motivate a young king to learn about philosophy, and result in the arrival of the kingdom’s numerous gods, in person, as it were. It should be noted that Djelibeybi is nothing like Egypt in any way whatsoever. Really. Thanks for popping in for some Pratchips! We love all you guys. The high priest Dios has a secret. He is also the one who makes sure that the kingdom of Djelibeybi functions as it should—with one day being pretty much like the last. Dios has a problem, though. The new king, Teppic, doesn’t think much of that idea. Then he has another problem: the pyramid built for Teppic’s father is so big that it wrenches the kingdom through 90 degrees of space-time, cutting it off from the rest of the Disc. Then he has a third problem: all the gods of Djelibeybi—and there are a lot of them—show up and start raising havoc. Dios is not good with change. In the end, though—well, you’ll have to read the book to find out how Dios ends up.Thanks for popping in for some Pratchips! We love all you guys. The ancient land of Djelibeybi—nothing like Roundworld Egypt in any way whatsoever, mind—has a new king. Teppic has been away training as an assassin in far Ankh-Morporkk when his father finally decides to act on his belief that he is a seagull. The high priest Dios takes Teppic’s education in hand, much to the latter’s displeasure. But, it is also decreed that Teppic’s father shall have a pyramid twice the size of any other, and this causes… problems. It’s up to Teppic, the handmaiden Ptraci, and a camel named You Bastard to try to sort things out—and restore Djelibeybi to its place on the Disc—literally! Otto Chriek’s fascination, if not obsession with light leads him to experiment with the dark light produced by the Uberwaldean land eels. That has some startling unintended consequences. Those include sending Mr. Pin round the bend, and causing a dog stampede (well, at least it started with dogs) in the streets of Ankh-Morpork. Thanks for popping in for some Pratchips! Mr. Pin and Mr. Tulip are a pair of hired killers. They will also commit associated crimes—for the right price. Mr. Pin, a very rat-like man, is the brains of the operation. Mr. Tulip… well, Mr. Tulip is a man of many parts. He will snort just about any powdery substance he can lay his hands on, but his lack of intelligence in the matter of procuring said substances leads to him frequently being cheated into buying, for example, powdered mothballs. The pair meet their match—and their fate—in Ankh-Morpork. The Big Wahoonie turns out to be too much for them. Despite their best efforts, they are unable either to complete the job they’ve been hired to do, or get out of town with the small fortune in jewels they extort from Mr. Slant. Instead they meet Death—and have two very different experiences in the afterlife. Thanks for popping in for some Pratchips! We love all you guys. The Black Ribboner Otto Chriek becomes the iconographer for the Times, despite the fact that the flash from the salamanders sometimes turns him to dust, and at the very least leaves him rolling and, yes, shrieking on the floor. Otto becomes a vital part of the staff of the Times. His experiments with dark light, however, will have some… unintended consequences. Thanks for popping in for some Pratchips! We love all you guys. Young William de Worde finds himself producing a paper of news after getting hit in the forehead by a piece of lead type that flies off a runaway cart, owned by the dwarfs, and including a printing press. William finds his hands more than full, with Vetinari having words with him, Sam Vimes wanting to throw him in jail, a pair of psychotic killers after his blood, and… oh yes, a man who grows “humorous vegetables” and would like pictures of them published in the Ankh-Morpork Times—all of this happening while he is trying to get the truth of an apparent plot to depose the Patrician. There’s a killer on the loose in Ankh-Morpork—a killer armed with a gonne. On top of that, the dwarfs and trolls are at each other’s throats, Captain Vimes is getting married, and Carrot conscripts dozens of people to be in the Watch—technically the Citizens Militia, because there has been “an irreparable breakdown in law and order.” And Carrot knows his law. Men at Arms, 15th Discworld book, is the subject of our Pratchips episodes this week (as well as of the above clever, pithy blurb). Our Podpage webpage is down for maintenance this week. Ned Simnel is Dick Simnel’s father. Before he gets himself turned into a cloud of pink steam, he invents a machine called the Combination Harvester, which is supposed to do just that. Bill Door is horrified by this machine which will harvest without caring or even knowing what it’s doing. He ultimately destroys the machine, which may well have been what turned Ned in the direction of exploring the possibilities of steam power.
