When Brooke McAlary's latest book, CARE: The Radical Art of Taking Time - landed at my local post office, I was honestly overjoyed.   But little did I know the impact this beautifully designed book would have on my social media addiction.   Running a start-up online business and webinars “requires” you to be online. Yet there's a fine line between focused social media scheduling, 'networking' and procrastiscrolling. The latter infiltrated my daily rhythm more than I cared to admit.   In recent weeks, my screen time was about 5 hours a day and I was horrified when I saw this data. That’s the equivalent of a part-time job.   This made me stop and think:   💭 Why am I using socials so much?  💭 What need is it serving?  💭 What could I be doing instead?"    And I've chosen to do a digital detox for Dry July.   In previous experiments, I’ve replaced the social media check with incessant email checking.   So this time I’m trying a two-stage process to encourage a steep reduction in screen time, which is discussed in more detail in this episode.   1)  A week before the detox, delete all apps from the phone and only use desktop to check once or twice a day   2) Set strict limits when checking the platforms   3) View the digital detox as an experiment and have self-compassion

The Impact of Stress

The Impact of Stress

2021-05-2717:03

In this episode we share few fundamentals we teach in the BREATHE Program: We are all bio-individual – one woman’s pleasure is another’s poison. The energy we give to nourishing things ‘off the plate’ override what we’re actually eating: Relationships Career Spirituality Physical Exercise We can’t avoid stress altogether. But we can incorporate daily practices into our lives that will not only help to cope with our current stress levels, but also prevent long-term effects on our health and wellbeing, such as: Eating clean wholefoods Getting adequate sleep Reducing the intake of ultra-processed foods and caffeine Leaning into the yin of self-care If you would like to unpack ways to support yourself through self-care activities, we’ve included in the show notes a tool we walk our clients through in the BREATHE Program.   It’s called “The Yin and Yang of Self-Compassion” and helps you map actions you can take to nurture masculine and feminine aspects of yourself in times of stress.   It's a free download, no need to add your email address, just hit the button and enjoy understanding this method of self-care at a deeper level.   DOWNLOAD THE YIN & YANG OF SELF-COMPASSION HERE   ************************************** ABOUT THE GUT-MIND COLLECTIVE   The Gut-Mind Collective helps busy women develop sustainable, nourishing health habits so you feel calmer and more energetic.    We share guided meditations, gut-mind health hacks & interviews to inspire you to put yourself first & lead a purposefully healthy life.   Connect with us online: https://thegutmindcollective.com    And join a Collective of like-minded women who value COURAGE, CONNECTION, NOURISHMENT & NATURE in our free Facebook community, Nourish & Connect: https://www.facebook.com/groups/nourishandconnect/

Today’s episode dives deep into the concept of being a multipotentialite, yes it’s a thing, and I’ll share a bit of my life and career journey over the last twenty years.   Have you ever tried to write your major definite purpose and every single iteration felt slightly foreign?   Maybe your resume shows polarities in sectors and job titles and you struggle to answer the age-old question “What do you do?”.   It may be possible that you’ve studied a degree and never immersed yourself in that path as your ‘career’.   If you showed a slight raised hand to any of these examples, I invite you to consider maybe you’re a multipotentialite!   A multipotentialite, or a multipod/scanner/polymath for short, is someone with many interests and creative pursuits.   In her 2015 TED Talk, Why Some of Us Don’t Have One True Calling[1], and on her blog[2] Emilie Wapnick shares the challenges and superpowers of a multipod.   “Multipotentialites often struggle with: Finding work that provides both enough variety and stability Productivity and focus issues, like balancing the need to explore with the need to make progress on multiple projects Challenges with mental health and confidence, such as imposter syndrome, answering the question So, what do you do? and dealing with family and friends who don’t understand.”   Conversely, these challenges may exist because of a misunderstanding of what makes a multipod tick, and their inherent gifts and talents…   Wapnick goes on to explain, “When multipotentialites are supported and encouraged to embrace their diverse skills and experiences, they’re able to tap into their super powers: Idea synthesis Rapid learning Adaptability Big picture thinking Relating to and translating between different types of people, “languages,” and modes of thought”   Many people spend days, weeks, months, years, and even decades in careers that are opposed to who they are destined to be as spiritual beings.   You CAN find alignment in your career, spirituality, health, and relationships. It’s all about finding work you love or learning to love the work you do.   We’re not asking you to leave your 9-to-5 job to pursue something else and have a fulfilling life – there are always ways to find joy in your career or work whether you’re working full-time or part-time, studying, or looking for a new path.   You can begin moving towards a more meaningful career by working through the process “Find Your Ikigai” and using the tips we feature over on our blog: https://thegutmindcollective.com/multipod   SOURCE: [1] Wapnick, E. “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humour, and some style.” - Maya Angelou   Inspired by this Maya Angelou quote in her mid-40s, it soon became Mish Green's mantra as she raised a teenage boy and supported her father through his battle with cancer. Having not long separated from her partner of nearly twenty years, Mish was navigating life on her own in what seemed like everything had collided.   Mish was feeling stuck and lost. Stress and anxiety were ruling her life and affecting her health. In survival mode, Mish wanted to thrive.   Mish started with a daily morning walk and a simple meditation practice. Her morning routine became an essential part of her day. She started to explore mindfulness and how she could incorporate in her day. Mish devoured articles and books, followed like-minded people on social media, listened to podcasts, and participated in challenges, courses and coaching programs.   Mish set herself a goal of walking the Camino. That opportunity came in 2018 to walk the Portuguese Coastal Camino from Porto to Santiago. The week prior Mish found herself at the lowest point ever. She was burnt out, experiencing high levels of stress and anxiety. She doubted she would be able to get on a plane and fly halfway round the world. Somehow Mish found the strength, got on the plane and walked 350km over 14 days extending Camino to Finisterre. It was the best thing she ever did, connecting with fellow pilgrims, experiencing the lows and highs whilst overcoming challenges and obstacles. Mish returned with the realisation that our life’s journey is our Camino.   “Don’t come to the Camino looking for answers. Instead, come with an open heart and you may be surprised by what you find.” Jane Blanchard   A Mindful Middle continues as a journey Mish wants to share, an appreciation for life and living in the moment in the middle years embracing mindfulness, mediation and walking. Mish's goal is to take groups of women to Spain and walk the Camino.   ************************************** CONNECT WITH MISH GREEN A Mindful Middle website: https://www.amindfulmiddle.com  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/amindfulmiddle/  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicholsmichelle/  Marquet Digital website: https://marquetdigital.com.au   ************************************** ABOUT THE GUT-MIND COLLECTIVE   The Gut-Mind Collective helps busy women develop sustainable, nourishing health habits so you feel calmer and more energetic.    We share guided meditations, gut-mind health hacks and interviews to inspire you to put yourself first and lead a purposefully healthy life.   Be sure to subscribe to our channel so you can catch our future episodes: https://thegutmindcollective.com/podcast/   Connect with us online: https://thegutmindcollective.com   And join a Collective of like-minded women who value COURAGE, CONNECTION, NOURISHMENT & NATURE in our free Facebook community, Nourish & Connect: https://www.facebook.com/groups/nourishandconnect/
E is for Exercise

E is for Exercise

2021-04-1507:34

This episode focuses on the role exercise plays in your overall health, especially walking in nature. The next time you’re under pressure and need a nature-fix, listen to your body. Take time to immerse yourself in nature and then come back to what you’re doing. During the walk, focus on the senses of smell, sight and sound. What does the air smell like? What do you see? What colours are predominant? What do you hear? Notice the sounds as they come and go. And of course focus on your breath flowing in and out. Allowing your belly to be soft and absorbing the magic of nature.
Christine Ford is a counsellor, hypnotherapist and creator of Sensual Seed Oracle Card Deck.   Christine created the Sensual Seed Oracle Card Deck to help her heal from a personal crisis that brought her to her knees. Looking back, this event took her life in a new direction and she began to connect with her authentic Feminine Power.   After studying a Diploma in Professional Counselling, Christine felt deeply motivated to find out how she could help her clients with a tool more powerful than traditional ‘talk therapy’.    That is when she started researching and experiencing hypnotherapy and became convinced that this powerful tool was the perfect accompaniment to her practice.   Christine has continued exploring the world of metaphysics and healing to find the answers that she was looking for but could not find in traditional wisdom.   In the process, she came across and used many oracle card decks.  She felt comforted by how powerful they were but was disappointed to not find any centred around self-care and sensuality.   That’s when Christine knew she had to create one!   In this conversation, Christine shares ways that women can connect with the Divine Feminine, schedule more white space, lean into the yin energy and embrace the juicy flow of life through dance.   ************************************** CONNECT WITH CHRISTINE & LEARN ABOUT SENSUAL SEED Website: https://www.sensualseed.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SeedOracleCards Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sensualseed  ************************************** DANCE CIRCLES Qoya: https://www.qoya.love/about-qoya-classes Breeza Love: https://breezalove.com 5Rhythms Eltham: https://www.5rhythms.com/classes/FreeFalling-285350 ************************************** ABOUT THE GUT-MIND COLLECTIVE   The Gut-Mind Collective helps busy women develop sustainable, nourishing health habits so you feel calmer and more energetic.    We share guided meditations, gut-mind health hacks and interviews to inspire you to put yourself first and lead a purposefully healthy life.   Be sure to subscribe to our channel so you can catch our future episodes: https://thegutmindcollective.com/podcast    Connect with us online: https://thegutmindcollective.com   And join a Collective of like-minded women who value COURAGE, CONNECTION, NOURISHMENT & NATURE in our free Facebook community, Nourish & Connect: https://www.facebook.com/groups/nourishandconnect
Today’s episode focuses on why you need to lean into sensations when big feelings arise and how this is the vessel for healing.   The more present you become, the calmer and more contented you will become. Your health will then improve, you’ll get a better quality of sleep and your patience will be increased. What more could you want?   If you want to dive deep into awareness of your feelings, I invite you to tune into the Wheel of Awareness Meditation, which you can find here. This will help you practice acceptance of thoughts/feelings/emotions/sensations each time you experience an obstacle in your path.   I also encourage you to journal any observations that arise when focusing on this meditation technique.   And feel free to head over to our Facebook community, Nourish and Connect, and share any aha moments that arise for you.   ************************************** ABOUT THE GUT-MIND COLLECTIVE   The Gut-Mind Collective helps busy women develop sustainable, nourishing health habits so you feel calmer and more energetic.
This exercise comes from the Buddhist practice of mudita, which means “appreciative joy.” It can be understood as simply “showing up” for happiness with a caring presence. As you train the mind to rejoice in happiness, you gain many benefits. You feel more fulfilled by joy, recognize happiness more easily in your life, and train the mind to treat happiness as an important experience. Enjoy this meditation.   With love xx ************************************** ABOUT THE GUT-MIND COLLECTIVE The Gut-Mind Collective helps busy women develop sustainable, nourishing health habits so you feel calmer and more energetic.  We share guided meditations, gut-mind health hacks and interviews to inspire you to put yourself first and lead a purposefully healthy life. In this episode we share a lesson on self-care. And why tuning to your body’s rhythm, and understanding what it needs in any given moment, is so important for whole-body wellness.   When you cram your life with things... inputs,  distractions,  tasks,  goals,  priorities,    ... there’s no room to take a metaphorical breath.   And if you’re under extended periods of pressure, the stress hormone cortisol peaks and can disrupt your immune system.    This may result in a minor ailment like a common cold or flu, muscular tension, headaches, emotional responses such as anxiety or overwhelm. Or your immune system could become compromised.   Understanding your body’s rhythm and going with the flow, the ‘yin’ energy, rather than pushing yourself when you feel tired, or being in ‘yang’ energy, is one way to tilt into a more natural pace of life.   Self-care is an activity that nurtures and refuels you at a deep level. So what refuels you?   At The Gut-Mind Collective, we group self-care into five categories which offer unique spaces for care and attention: Physical body Emotional and mental state Spiritual beliefs Relationship to self Relationship to others Work How can you tune into your body’s wisdom and offer yourself the gift of self-care?   Read the full blog post 'The Gift of Self-Care' here: https://thegutmindcollective.com/the-gift-of-self-care/    ************************************** ABOUT THE GUT-MIND COLLECTIVE   The Gut-Mind Collective helps busy women develop sustainable, nourishing health habits so you feel calmer and more energetic.    We share guided meditations, gut-mind health hacks and interviews to inspire you to put yourself first and lead a purposefully healthy life.   Be sure to subscribe so you can catch our future episodes: https://thegutmindcollective.com/podcast/   Connect with us online: https://thegutmindcollective.com   And join a Collective of like-minded women who value COURAGE, CONNECTION, NOURISHMENT & NATURE in our free Facebook community, Nourish & Connect: https://www.facebook.com/groups/nourishandconnect/
