In this episode of the John 3:15 Podcast--Part 6 of 6-ish--The dudes speculate about ancient notions of property rights, debate how to count years and TOTALLY FUMBLE not one but two numerologically awesome opportunities. Additionally, the end is in sight for the dudes’ series on Politics and Theology with this penultimate episode about Leviticus 25: the Jubilee. Oft misunderstood and misapplied, the Jubilee year marks a time of debts being canceled, slaves being freed, property being returned and socialist utopia being ushered in. Well, at least 3 of those things are correct. But seriously, the Jubilee is pretty radical, bro, and the guys dissect all 55 verses in this mega deep dive. If you liked our Jonah episode (shameless plug for episode 20: https://youtu.be/9mzcEOjMNic), then you are gonna absolutely love this episode too! In this episode of the John 3:15 Podcast--Part 5 of 6-ish--The dudes welcome a new contributor to the show, develop an alternative to the “ACTS” prayer model and (plot twist!) defend Franklin Graham from detractors! Also, they continue their series on Politics and Theology by diving into 1 Timothy 2:1-2. On first reading, the meaning is clear: pray for kings; but how exactly are we supposed to do that? Learn it all and more on this episode! In this episode of the John 3:15 Podcast--Part 4 of 6-ish--The dude upset “real” libertarians (including the agorists, not that they would know given that this show airs on YouTube), anticipate new babies and learn that taxation might not always be theft! That’s right, the dudes are finally taking on taxation in their series on Politics and Theology. Jesus seems to be pretty clear about taxes: render unto Caesar! In one sense, this famous passages from the Gospels really is cut-and-dry, but is there something more going on in this passage: perhaps a different point that Jesus is trying to make other than legitimizing the Roman state? The guys also tackle several other tax-related passages and try to do a bit of topical theology to stitch them all together. In this episode of the John 3:15 Podcast--Part 3 of 6-ish--The dude share their conflicted feelings, realize they don’t actually disagree and barely keep this episode shorter than part 1 (yikes these guys ramble!). Also they tackle the infamous ROMANS 13! Is this verse really the ultimate checkmate for State sympathizers against dissent, or could Paul (the sufferer of substantial persecution under Roman rule) be making a more nuanced point? You may think you know the answer already, but the guys have a plot-twist that you won't want to miss! In this episode of the John 3:15 Podcast--Part 2.5 of 6ish--it is just Jonathan! As a precursor to the next episode (part 3) on Romans 13, enjoy this sermon Jonathan gave several weeks back at his church talking about Romans 12. In this episode of the John 3:15 Podcast, the dudes reminisce about Christian liberal arts colleges, re-brand German Protestantism as “Luth-air-ianims” and dunk on some mega-church pastors. Also, they host a new guest: Donald Kimball, podcaster extraordinaire! Now, in addition to some cross-promo with Donald’s podcast “Cringe Post” (checkout Jeremy’s interview on their show: https://open.spotify.com/episode/4ThRUCbaQgmfSRB002jxse?si=c14756607cdc48a0), the guys also discuss a Habakkuk 1:5! On first reading, this verse seems to being some pretty great encouragement about God’s providence, but is that all that’s going on? Could the context of this verse, perhaps, provide some nuance? You may think you already know the answer, but Donald has an epic plot-twist planned for the guys: Jonathan didn’t see it coming! Buckle up for this roller-coaster of an episode! Links Cross-Promo! In this episode of the John 3:15 Podcast--part 2 of 6-ish on politics and theology--the dudes name a violent beast of burden, dunk on the American prison industrial complex and leave the era of radio behind! That’s right, in addition to listening to their dulcet voices, you can now gaze upon the beautiful visages of Jonathan and Jeremy on their new youtube channel (see the link below) where video versions of each episode will be released! Don’t fear, though, audio versions of all the podcasts episodes will continue to be uploaded here on this RSS feed for all you commuter, distance runners, combine operators and visually-impaired listeners. With that announcement out of the way, the dudes also continue their series on theology and politics; in this episode they tackle the Old Testament law! In particular they look into the famous law “eye for an eye” passage. Did you know that the context of that verse is super wack? Does and eye for an eye really make the whole world blind, or did God actually know what He was talking about when he spoke to Moses? The dudes explain all in this episode! In this episode of the John 3:15 Podcast--part 1 of 6-ish on politics and theology--the dudes “reveal” their political leanings, call out “evanjellyfish” leaders on their bad hot takes and finally break the 2 hour podcast length (holy moley!). They say that, in polite company, you should never discuss religion or politics; well, I guess this podcast isn’t “polite company” ‘cause the guys tackle both! This is the first episode in a new series on politics, government, and theology. The guys start by taking a look at a famous saying of Jesus about his upside-down kingdom: Matthew 20:27, then use that as a springboard to do a slightly more topical overview of how the Bible asks us to think about authority structures. They revamp the “5 application points” as a few points of political consideration for the listening audience. At over 2 hours long, this is a biggie; hope you’re ready for a wild ride! First Note from the Editor: we are starting to look at some more sustainable ways to produce the podcast, given the rapidly growing number of children that Jeremy and Jonathan have. To that end, you may notice a slightly lower audio quality and also slightly less “tightly cut” dialog. Both of these are to save Jonathan time in edit, and he apologizes for any distress this may cause his audiophiliac listeners. Second Note from the Editor: This episode was recorded before the release of John Piper’s recent article on christian freedom vis a vis vaccination. So, if you are wondering why the guys don’t discuss it when they bring Piper up near the end of the episode, that is why.
In this episode of the John 3:15 Podcast, the dudes discover an awesome Alternative Metal rock band name, guiltily salivate over scrumptious treats, and learn that our guest might be a closeted Lutheran. That’s right, the dudes are joined this week by special guest Gryphon Shafer of Bible-Quizzing, business-starting, airplane-piloting, movie-theater-owning and PhD-possessing fame! When he isn’t touring the country and starting youth discipleship ministries, Gryphon has been known to think about the Bible, and he is bringing his A-game to this episode, so buckle up! Hosea 3:1: you might know the first part of that verse to be a summary statement of the whole book, but Gryphon focuses in on the lesser known second half of the verse where we learn about the Israelites’ love (worship?) of (sacred?) raisin cakes (of the pagans?) -- honestly it is a little confusing depending on which translation you read. Fear not, Gryphon explains all in this earth-shattering exposé of the true meaning of Hosea 3:1. In this episode of the John 3:15 Podcast, Jon is out taking care of his newborn daughter and Jeremy attempts to present a "short" podcast on his own. (Spoiler alert: it didn't end up short.) Even without Jon to banter with, Jeremy manages to express his distaste for necromancy and debunk the near-death-experiences of comatose 6-year-olds. He also argues that the question of what constitutes a "parable" was maybe the wrong thing to be asking this whole time. Does a story have to be historically true to be a parable? And either way, what should we think about the Rich Man and Lazarus - is it historical, or did Jesus make up the story to illustrate a point? Listen and find out Jeremy's take on this classic debate. In this episode of The John 3:15 Podcast, the dudes learn some (read: a lot) of history, decry the destructive force of gophers and welcome another guest to the podcast! This week, the dudes talk to Josiah Leinbach: bible quizzer, theologian, historian and speed-quoter extraordinaire! He has a doozy of a hot take to hit the dudes with. You know the (so called) “Parable” of the Good Samaritan? Yeah, Josiah doesn’t think it’s a parable, he thinks it is a real story. And that’s not all, he even thinks he knows who the characters in the “parable” are! Needless to say, the dudes were skeptical. Want to see if Josiah makes his case and wins the dudes over? Find out in this episode! Music from the episode: Te Deum for the Victory – Handel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWGEMj70dF) I Bind Unto Myself Today – Patrick (https://youtu.be/gXj_epqheMw)
In this episode of The John 3:15 Podcast, the dudes discover the conditions under which they would battle a chimpanzee, reveal humbling moments from their past and release the reins of the podcast to a special guest! That’s right, this week the dudes welcome Tim Van Schenck (Jonathan’s dad) onto the podcast to discuss the “Pauline Paradox” of 2 Corinthians 12:10. How can we be strong and weak at the same time? Tim reveals all in this episode!
In this episode of The John 3:15 Podcast, the dudes attempt to dunk on each other (spoilers, Jeremy is WAY better at dunking), dunk on bad prophets in the bible but forbear to dunk on VeggieTales. Also, they discuss one of the most misunderstood prophets: Jonah. Well, sorta misunderstood; say what you will about Phil Vischer, but he totally nails the point of the Book of Jonah in the VeggieTales movie. BUT! While the VeggieTales' take on Jonah might be pretty great, you should still totally listen to this episode because the dudes get way more into-the-weeds than is appropriate for a children's cartoon. Also, there's a special treat at the end of the episode: the top 5 worst prophets in the bible (you'll never guess prophet number 2!). Music from the introduction: "Winged Hussars" by Sabaton (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcYhYO02f98) "String Quartet 7" by Ben Johnston (https://youtu.be/Wp7VjBtOJ74)
In this episode of The John 3:15 Podcast, the dudes discover that Jonathan doesn't actually know the c++ programming language, compare their favorite snobby biblical literature classification terminology and make Ken Ham proud by defending the bible's accuracy vis-à-vis the water cycle. Also, they discuss another "popular because of the King James' rendering" verse: Isaiah 55:11. What does it mean for "God's word" to not "return void"? Find out in this episode!
In this episode of The John 3:15 Podcast the dudes laugh at their own lack of OT knowledge, learn that Jeremy has a Biblical Spidey Sense and subtly (or not so subtly) dunk on institutions of "higher" education. Additionally, they also address a super popular verse, quoted by many to help in times of temptation: 1 Corinthians 10:13. True to form, the dudes dig DEEP into the background of this verse, and even do a NT word study on "temptation" to round the epsidode out.
In this episode of The John 3:15 Podcast the dudes return from hiatus, imagine new theology words and decide that if your partner loves Jesus and is hot it is definitely God’s will for you to marry them (for a certain definition of “will”). More broadly, they use 1 Thessalonians 4:3 as an excuse to do some topical theology on “God’s Will” -- what is it, how does it work and can we know it? They talk about the classical distinction between the Preceptive (sometimes called Revealed) Will of God and the Decretive (sometime called Secret) Will of God, and decide that we need a third categorization: the Collaborative Will of God. Looking for some high brow theology and philosophy mixed in with some low brow humor? This is the episode for you: strap in.
In this episode of The John 3:15 Podcast--part 5 of 5-ish in a series on evangelism--the dudes engage in theological civil engineering, assign the listeners homework and opine about the virtues of party life (good party life, not dissipative party life). Additionally, they briefly mention Romans 5:1 and 8:1 before jumping off into a topical discussion about the merits of the Romans Road as a whole. Rather than just tearing it down, they offer some constructive feedback, and some ideas for improvement (see, they don’t always just dunk on stuff). Additional announcement: Jonathan is desperately trying to finish his dissertation before his defense on March 16th, so the T315P will be taking a short hiatus so that he can buckle down and finish everything up. See y'all soon! Das Romans Autobaun, Ja! Romans 3:23 - Universal Sinfulness Romans 6:23 - Sin deserves death Romans 5:8 - Christ died to us Romans 10:9 - Submission to Christ’s lordship Romans 5:1 - Our condemnation is removed Romans 8:9 - Indwelling of the Spirit Romans 6:3-4 - Baptism Romans 8:1 - Union with Christ Romans 8:34 - Christ’s Exultation and Intercession Romans 12:2 - Sanctification Romans 12:10 - Participation of in the Church Romans 8:38-39 - Perseverance
In this episode of The John 3:15 Podcast--part 4 of 5-ish in a series on evangelism--the dudes trade off-the-cuff analogies (Jeremy's are better), geek out over how cool Paul is (because, seriously, he is pretty cool) and forgo their much-used application point about the importance of the OT (though in hindsight, this week would have been perfect for it). Also, they set their sights on the penultimate stop along the “Romans Road” with more good news: Romans 10:9. No dunking this week (sorry Magic Johnson fans), we just dig deep into the context of this verse to see just how boss it is. Hope you brought your Bibles, 'cause we are going deep this week.
In this episode of the Matthew 1:18 Podcast, the dudes break all their established podcasting conventions: neglecting cheesy sound effects, foregoing improbable monikers, and even including the Oxford Comma! Additionally, they put down a few "Sacred Camels" of the Christmas story, substituting their own theories for how the birth of Jesus REALLY came about. Finally, they continue their debate from last episode about the best Christmas hymns, see below for links to some of their favorites. We'll return to the Romans Road next time, but for now we want to wish you a merry Christmas! Jesus is almost here, folks -- let's be ready when he arrives. Songs referenced in this episode: "Little Drummer Boy" "This Little Babe" Written: Benjamin Britten (https://youtu.be/SVE0WJfwVhA) "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" "We Three Kings" "Of the Father's Love Begotten" Performed: New Scottish Hymns (https://youtu.be/0ODQbdufdBg) "O Holy Night" "Mary Did You Know?" In this episode of The John 3:15 Podcast--part 3 of 5-ish in a series on evangelism--the dudes pontificate on epistemology, debate about the best Christmas hymn and return to their usual modus operandi (dunking on stuff) by eviscerating evidential apologetics as an evangelistic methodology. Also, they continue their series on the “Romans Road” by finally getting to the good news: Romans 5:8. In a shocking turn of events, the dudes actually argue that the Romans Road interpretation of this verse is absolutely spot on. That being said, there is a ton of really neat stuff going in the background of this verse! So, if you want to get into the weeds, be sure to crack this sucker open and pour it down your ear holes.
