Carla is the true definition of a warrior. Our friendship dates back about 5 years ago, and the first song I ever wrote under my own name was with her. Unfortunately, that song never saw the light of day, due to my own development as an artist, but Carla turns any track she's on into gold.  About a year and a half ago, she got diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer at only 22 years old. This is a tragedy that both she and I wouldn't wish on any one; however, Carla's positive spirit and outlook is not only infectious, but nothing shy of amazing.  Carla's been dealt some undeniably terrible cards, but through it all has always persevered. If there's anybody in the world with the courage and strength to persevere through this, it's her. She talks about how doctors told her that she would never walk again, but today she's walking. She was told she'd never be able to live on her own, but she does. If there's anything to take from today's episode, it's that anything is possible and to not sweat the small stuff.   Connect with Carla: Instagram(s): https://www.instagram.com/beatsinbed/?hl=en Vlog: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCFDjYLEM4sYJr474bP6w_0A  Twitter: https://twitter.com/flwrsinmylungs   Connect with the host, Wes:  Spotify: www.bit.ly/wesyeespotify Email: wes@homestudiohits.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/wesyeemusic Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wes.yee/ Snapchat: @wesyeeee

I swear Freeloader MC is my brother who got separated at birth. Both of us are Asian American rapper and producers on opposite coasts of the country.  I first heard of Freeloader MC when he made his diss track at Lil Pump, which went completely viral. Lil Pump released a song recently called "Butterfly Doors," where he has a line that says "Call me Yao Ming cause my eye's real low (Ching Chong)." Freeloader's fans were sending him this video and it inspired him to make a diss track about it. Freeloader clocked just about 4.5 million views on his video, and I created one too.  Some of the people who heard mine told me I should reach out to Freeloader MC, and the rest is history. In today's episode we talk about the viral video he had and also some of the inspiration behind it. It's a common misconception that when someone makes a diss track, the person who made it is genuinely offended by the person they target, but this isn't always true. Freeloader saw an opportunity to support our people and culture, while getting his name out there at the same time and there is nothing wrong with that.   Sponsors/ Affiliates:  Music Entrepreneur Club & Beat Club - Having mentors have been key to my success as a music producer and audio engineer. Today I sat down with Ben Wilde, the CEO and owner of Sound Sauce studios. Ben and I met on an online Facebook group for audio engineers, and he's an award winning mastering engineer who's worked with one of the Spice Girls, The Arctic Monkeys & more. We talk about the controversial app Landr, that's known for its ability to master tracks instantly and whether or not Landr is something an artist should use to master their music. There's a lot of confusion around what mastering actually is and Ben was able to clear it up in today's episode!   Sponsors/ Affiliates:  Music Entrepreneur Club & Beat Club - Having mentors have been key to my success as a music producer and audio engineer. If you've been on the internet, you may have seen the video that's gone viral over ten different times called "Homeless Man Raps In Chicago Subway."  It's in total accumulated around 70 million views, and it's unfortunate that few people know that the guy rapping in it is named Solow Redline, and he's been putting out music for years now! In today's episode, we talk about how that video came to fruition, and how it blew up. There's a lot to the story that nobody knows, and one of the big things that surprised me was that the person who filmed it knew Solow Redline's name and information and didn't give him credit the first time it exploded. Another thing that shocked me about the video is that it was 100% freestyled and completely off the top of his head. Solow is a rare breed of artists who can create all of his songs on the spot. He credits his ability to the fact that he HAD to do it and make it work to feed his children and survive.  We talk about the R. Kelly situation, being homeless, and what his future plans are. You can hear all about it in the episode, and Solow Redline is 100% someone you're going to want to be following in 2019 and the years to come.   Sponsors/ Affiliates:  Music Entrepreneur Club & Beat Club - Having mentors have been key to my success as a music producer and audio engineer. Listen to episode 34, "Don't Get Scammed" first.  I tell the story of how Kyle Bent, P. Diddy's brother in law and I fell for the most elaborate internet scam in the world. This is a sequel to this episode where I not only explain where the situation currently sits, but I also replay what used to be episode 29 that featured Malik Brockett.  This time, it's important to relisten to it with a different mindset to gain the full education I intended for this episode.   Sponsors/ Affiliates:  Music Entrepreneur Club & Beat Club - Having mentors have been key to my success as a music producer and audio engineer. Today I sat down with recent Berklee College of Music graduate and roommate of mine, Bobby Butler to talk about the highs and lows of pursuing a higher education. Bobby is the keys player in one of the most active GB bands on the east coast, Groovin' You. He's also a composer, arranger and producer as well.  We've actually known each other since high school, and by pure chance ended up going to college together, a couple years apart. Bobby is killing it, and since he's been in school more recently than I have, I thought this would be a perfect topic to discuss. Having gone through the college experience myself, I have many mixed feelings and opinions about it. Bobby makes some excellent points about it that can only be heard in this episode.   Sponsors/ Affiliates:  Music Entrepreneur Club & Beat Club - Having mentors have been key to my success as a music producer and audio engineer. Zeke and I met about a year and a half ago when I did my first show as a solo artist. He was on tour with my friends band, Dead Poet Society, filming and documenting the whole journey.  That night we met was extremely memorable to say the least. I got to play my first show to a room full of people, have it filmed and recorded, and also connect with amazing people like Zeke. Zeke and I hit it off right off the bat - We both have a similar entrepreneurial mindset and spirit and nothing has come easy for either of us. Zeke has been a hustler for his entire life. He's a successful independent film maker and owner of the internet radio station, WTYT960 which gives bands the opportunity to showcase their music and rewards them for their social media activity. His most recent project is a film called Billboard, and you'll learn a ton from hearing his journey creating the film.    Sponsors/ Affiliates:  Music Entrepreneur Club & Beat Club - Having mentors have been key to my success as a music producer and audio engineer. Today's episode is inspired by a Wayne Gretzky quote - "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." The path to success in any industry is not linear. It's not a straight line by any means. It always comes with twists, turns, peaks and valleys and the only way to get to the finish line is to shoot your shot. You'll miss more than you make, and you have to be prepared for it but there is always a reason for the miss if you learn from it.   Sponsors/ Affiliates:  Music Entrepreneur Club & Beat Club - Having mentors have been key to my success as a music producer and audio engineer. In today's episode I talk about a Meek Mill interview I saw recently. Meek talks about his experiences with the police and how his upbringing played a role in his reaction to today's political climate. There's no question that there needs to be a change in the way we handle things and look at news in our society. I share a story about a cop incident that I had earlier this year as well. All in all, the takeaways from today's episode as the New Year approaches are to be grateful for what we have and to tackle your goals sooner than later. Instead of making your 2019 New Years Resolution, make it your goal for before 2019 starts.  If you finish it early, that's dope, and if not you've got a whole year to make it happen.   Sponsors/ Affiliates:  Music Entrepreneur Club & Beat Club - Having mentors have been key to my success as a music producer and audio engineer. Maggie and I have been friends for a little while now. We originally met at a housewarming party at my apartment about a year ago, and found quickly that we had good musical chemistry. You can see her on some of each other's Instagram videos and we collaborated on a song called "Numb," which is the first track of an old EP of mine called "NI.Ne" I didn't know what to expect the first time Maggie asked me to jam and told me that she could sing, but when I heard her I was blown away. Her voice sounds like Amy Winehouse reincarnated with her own unique hip hop flavor.  We talk about a lot of different things on today's episode, like how we constructed our song, Numb. We talk about the process of songwriting but also the phenomenon of tone deafness. Maggie mentions that her younger sister unfortunately can't sing the same way her and her parents can.  We talk about where tone deafness potentially comes from and if it can or can't be cured.   Sponsors/ Affiliates:  Music Entrepreneur Club & Beat Club - Having mentors have been key to my success as a music producer and audio engineer. If you follow the drama in music, specifically hip hop, at all, then you've probably heard the name Dame Ritter. He co founded the label Funk Volume with Hopsin, which was incredibly successful until the two of them had a fall out. Hopsin has a viral series on the internet, which he calls the Ill Mind Of Hopsin, and if you've heard Ill Mind Of Hopsin 8, then you know who Dame Ritter is. I'm honored to have Dame on the podcast and hear his side of the story. Because Hopsin has built such a name for himself and his brand, while Dame was mostly working behind the scenes of Funk Volume, most people only know Hopsin's side of the story.  From talking to Dame, I can tell he's a very intelligent and well-intentioned public figure. He currently runs the Music Entrepreneur Club, which he's partnered with Kato On The Track's Beat Club. He manages the artist Futuristic, and does tons of other amazing stuff.   Connect with Dame: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dame.mec/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/Dame_MEC?lang=en Music Entrepreneur Club: http://bit.ly/TMJmentor   Connect with the host, Wes:  Spotify: www.bit.ly/wesyeespotify Email: wes@homestudiohits.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/wesyeemusic Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wes.yee/ Snapchat: @wesyeeee

I've known Dylan for a long time, and I'm stoked to have him on the show. Dylan Stephenson and I first met at Berklee College of Music, where we both studied music production and audio engineering. There was a point in Dylan's life where he would drink every day, he felt depressed, had a poor diet, and didn't know where to go or what to do. He's since turned his situation around completely. Dylan is a full time piano teacher and music producer, and on top of that he's been vegan for over 2 years now. In today's episode, we cover a variety of topics from having perfect pitch to his depression phase to a new EP that he's releasing shortly. I hope you enjoy today's episode.   Sponsors/ Affiliates:  Music Entrepreneur Club & Beat Club - Having mentors have been key to my success as a music producer and audio engineer. If you listened to the last episode of The Music Journal, you know that Kyle Crosby-English, Kyle Bent and I all worked on a project called The Moment Is Forever. TMIF is Kyle Bent's newest album that he crafted in a way that anyone can listen to it. Beyond its new-age beats, with heavy bass and modern sound are deep lyrics about life's heavens, hell's and what it means to live in a 5D state of consciousness. There's a book to go along with the album that describes its concepts in more detail, for anyone interested and we talk about some of them on today's episode. This is Kyle's second time on The Music Journal podcast and I'm honored to not only have him back a second time, but to have been a part of his project too. Kyle Bent is only 21 years young and has already been on tour with Hopsin, Joyner Lucas, Token and performed with Wyclef Jean. From being an independent artist to signed and back to independent, he has tons of wisdom and value to share.   Sponsors/ Affiliates:  Music Entrepreneur Club & Beat Club - Having mentors have been key to my success as a music producer and audio engineer. The Music Journal Podcast is a show that documents trending musical events and topics as they happen. Our host, Wes Yee is a music producer and artist, himself. Because of this he’s been able to build an extremely broad network of amazing artists, musicians and people in the industry, and on this show he brings some of them on to chat about not only the trends, but also how you can apply them to your own career if you’re an aspiring music producer or artist. Kyle Crosby-English and I collab'd on my previous guest, Kyle Bent's new album without even knowing each other. There are a lot of people out there who look at art and music in a competitive way, but Kyle C.E. and I believe that it's through collaborating that great pieces are created.  I was super stoked to not only have him on the show, but also connect with him and have a genuine conversation. In addition to Kyle Bent, Kyle C.E. has also produced for Token and we chat about how he was able to make that happen. Behind every great artist is some great producer who started out working in their bedroom or mom's basement or wherever and are just waiting for their big break. Kyle C.E. and I both think that waiting can work, but we both also share a proactive drive that allows us to go out and connect with influencers bigger than us. We share the secret in this episode, and I'll give you a hint. It's not as hard as it sounds... He’s found himself in many different facets of the music industry – From writing and producing jingles, to licensing, to teaching to being an artist releasing his own music. Because of this he’s been able to build an extremely broad network of amazing artists, musicians and people in the industry, and on this show he brings some of them on to chat about not only the trends, but also how you can apply them to your own career if you’re an aspiring music producer or artist. Kendra Comstock is both an Early Music classical singer, and a music teacher as well. Despite getting her start in music later than many people, she has hit the ground running and never stopped. In today's episode we cover many topics, one being that she chose to pursue classical music as opposed to something more prevalent in pop culture. It's unfortunate that many people, myself included, often find ourselves conforming to trends and what other people think is "cool" rather than what we find enjoyment in. Kendra and I also talk about how there are only 12 notes in the chromatic scale, and only so many ways you can put them together. So does that mean that there are only so many possible ways to make music? Or will music always continue to evolve and grow as our society and culture does?   Sponsors/ Affiliates:  Music Entrepreneur Club & Beat Club - Having mentors have been key to my success as a music producer and audio engineer. This episode was largely inspired by Taylor Swift's recent political posts. After a long career of not speaking on the issue, she recently came forth and made her claims in favor of Democratic policies.  With how divided our nation is in its current political climate, I decided to do a solo episode and talk about my stance on everything. I think there are a number of issues that need to be discussed and there's a right and wrong way to go about them.   Connect with the host, Wes:  Spotify: www.bit.ly/wesyeespotify Email: wes@homestudiohits.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/wesyeemusic Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wes.yee/ Snapchat: @wesyeeee

You may remember Slyck Twoshadez from episode 001 of The Music Journal podcast. In that episode we talked about what births a hater and what to do when you inevitably find yourself with one. Flash forward a couple months, and he's back on the show with a new EP coming out.  Slyck is one of the partners of a company called Desi Hip Hop, which is the biggest South Asian hip hop blog. From doing everything from content curation to artist consults, Slyck knows a ton about the music industry and how to properly market and promote his own music too. A really controversial topic that we found ourselves talking about in today's episode is whether or not mumble rap is hip hop or not. It's clear that the sound of it is much different than what used to be perceived as "hip hop," but is that a bad thing? We also talk about what the new changes Spotify is making means for artists who go through distributors like CD Baby or TuneCore.    Sponsors/ Affiliates:  Music Entrepreneur Club & Beat Club - Having mentors have been key to my success as a music producer and audio engineer.
