*Heads Up- This is a re-release episode going way back to episode 19 of the podcast. Please note in this episode there is use of ableist language where I reference the term 'blind-spot.' I am sorry for perpetuating harm by using this term. Below in the show notes are resources to help educate on ableism and ableist language. Please take a few minutes to do research on ableism as this is one step we can all take in creating a just and inclusive culture* _______________________________ I'm sure you've heard the expression "train people how to treat you." On today's show we are talking about how to "train YOURSELF to treat yourself" That's done by demonstrating a high level of Self Integrity. It's knowing you always got your own back. It's knowing how to follow through on doing what's right for you. It's knowing you will be true to self. It's knowing you can make a mistake or miss the mark and still be in integrity. We live our lives one day at a time. And there is no greater peace of mind than knowing you have lived that day in integrity with self. That my friend is how we can make this our Super Power. Below are some key insights and learnings from today's episode: Learn more about the relationship between your values, your spending decisions, and self-integrity How honoring decisions you have made for yourself enhances your self trust Why practicing self-advocacy is essential to developing a trusting relationship with yourself. Why it's important to have an open mind and avoid falling into an 'echo chamber' Why it's important to take into account the season of life you are within as that can impact how you go about progressing towards your goals. This is an important topic we are covering on today's episode. Please listen, subscribe, and share the episode with folks who will benefit from this topic. Today on the podcast I am talking about how "financial freedom" is a farce and a terrible money goal to have for yourself. While there may be variations on how one defines "financial freedom" for themselves- it's still quite common for most folks to have "zero debt" as a pre-requisite of "financial freedom." Put another way, this means you can't be financially free if you are paying back debt. And this my friend, is the problem. In fact, it's not just one problem- there are TWO problems with this definition. This is such a problematic concept that I'm dedicating a full episode to this topic. Below are some key insights and learnings from today's episode: Why I coined the terms Mindset Masquerade and Debt Shaming Culture How to leverage an understanding of the Mindset Masquerade and Debt Shaming Culture when it comes to seeking "financial freedom." Why it's incorrect and incongruent to equivocate working hard with wealth The danger of making your "financial freedom" contingent on a future goal or version of yourself The importance of financial literacy including how to use debt as leverage. Today on the podcast we are talking about the power of progress. We live in a society and culture that is very much results oriented. I think there is such a hyper-focus on outcomes, results, and goals that we can miss a lot the goodness that comes along the way. In this episode I also shared about a major podcast goal that took almost 2 years to complete. If I'd only focused on the goal I would have missed out on countless wins, learnings, aha moments, and goodness along the way. And life is too short to miss out on goodness! I will be covering four mindset shifts you can take to reorient yourself to focus on progress instead of results and outcomes. I want you to pull out a pen and notebook for this episode, take notes and carve out some time for reflection. Below are some key insights and learnings from today's episode: Your power is in the present. Recognizing this is how we can have some impact and influence over our future circumstances and results. How to avoid falling into what I call the "Bang Fizzle Pitfall"- entering into a commitment with excitement for it only peter out and come to an end. How to recognize when personal development and improvement becomes unhealthy What it means to be in a state of expansion and how this can we can get a wider perspective on all options you have available as you progress towards a desired outcome. Why it's important to take into account the season of life you are within as that can impact how you go about progressing towards your goals. This is an important topic we are covering on today's episode. Please listen, subscribe, and share the episode with folks who will benefit from this topic. Today on the podcast we are talking about the power of practicing radical self-advocacy. I call this radical because for many folks who have marginalized and intersectional identities, the practice of standing up for yourself can be a radical act within a society and culture that does not recognize the humanity and rights of all individuals. Practicing self-advocacy is a form of self-love and of self-care. For women and folks impacted by misogyny and sexism, there is a risk in practicing self-advocacy because we are socialized as girls and women to be likeable, to be pleasant, to be nice, to put and to put other folks' comfort ahead of our own. This is a radical act when we are living within a society that has bias, prejudice, and discrimination built into the fabric of our culture. So the reality is one must be strategic in how you go about being a self-advocate, you need to understand the power dynamics at play within any situation, but what we are not going to do is allow worry about our likeability and perceived lack of humility to keep us from standing up for ourselves and our interests. Each time you stand up for yourself, make your interests known, communicate your non-negotiables, and are honest with yourself and others you are and living in alignment with your values. You practicing self-advocacy in your personal life is a power move. Below are some key insights from today's episode: The power of self-advocacy and how it's a crucial element to your self-care routine. Practicing self-advocacy won't guarantee a desired outcome but it will always be of benefit to you. Why self-advocacy is a power move especially for folks who have experienced bias, discrimination, and prejudice from the past and in the present. Why it's not always easy to be a self-advocate due to how girls and women have been socialized The powerful examples of how Simone Biles and Naomi Osaka- premier athletes and women of color who have unapologetically self-advocated for themselves by putting their mental and emotional health as a priority over profit. Learn three mindset shifts that can help you go from information about self-advocacy to implementation This is an important topic we are covering on today's episode. In some areas we are brimming with self-trust, and in other areas...not so much. And that's okay. The process of cultivating self-trust is a life-long practice. Because of this, it helps to be reminded that doubt is part of the human experience. This can include doubt and uncertainty when it comes to making decisions about money. When it comes to making money decisions, our thoughts and beliefs about money are guiding our actions. Money does not spend itself. Money does not save itself. Money does not invest itself. Money does not earn itself. We are the ones making the decisions. But we are making money decisions within a belief system. Our belief system is something to help us to make sense of the world. Our belief systems act as a filter through which we view the world and our place in it. And countless beliefs are interwoven within our belief systems. We have beliefs about ourselves. Beliefs about our self-worth and our capabilities. Beliefs about what we "should" do (or not do) with our money. We have beliefs about our partners, spouses, and folks with whom we share financial responsibilities. Often times our beliefs about money are instilled in us early on, as children. There are the beliefs we are told outright about money from our families, elders, friends, and communities. There are the beliefs placed upon us by society and the culture we live- in terms of who gets to have money and who does not. Who is good with money and who is not? Who is worthy of investment and who is not? Listen to today's episode where we cover the following key topics: The concept of belief and those beliefs we hold both at the conscious and subconscious levels. Because there is no talking about money without talking about beliefs and how it shows up in our day to day decisions which includes decisions around money. Some of the common money stories and beliefs that can get in the way of your goals. Learn an easy and simple method on how you can flip the script on some of the money beliefs that may be getting in your way. This is an important topic we are covering on today's episode. Early graffiti artists were commonly called "writers" or "taggers" (individuals who write simple "tags," or their stylized signatures, with the goal of tagging as many locations as possible.) The goals was to have one's work seen by as many people as possible, in as many places as possible. So taking a rivals tag name and replicating it upside down or backwards was a way to showcase one's own superior skills. It was a way to show a rival's "script" or "tag" was so simple you could replicate it any way. This is where "flip the script" originates and it's important for us to recognize it – Click Here to read more. "On The Other Side Of Rest Is Flow" which is a quote and teaching I've learned from one of my friends and mentors Ixchel Lunar. I'm very excited to be back and releasing new episodes of the OutSpoken Girlfriend podcast. I thought that I was going to take a shorter vacation and be back on the mic in June...but here we are over halfway through July and this was the time I needed. Today is a behind the scenes episode. Slowing down created space for me to really pay attention to what was going on within me and to just rest. Here's the thing, although I was taking time off for rest, the time away was not all rainbows, butterflies, and unicorns. There were some doubts and insecurities and questions that came up. But with time comes perspective so I'm in a position to share more on this. Listen in to hear me talk about self-doubt, visibility, who gets to rest (and who does not), and some of the mind-f*ckery that is so critical to deconstruct in our modern society. I had real worries I'd have no more podcast listeners since I was not putting out new content the last few months. This worry led me to get curious about just how deep within all of us is the culture of relentless productivity and the edict to "get sh*t done" at any cost. It's time to vanquish the hold of relentless productivity- and live in a state of flow. Today I'm taking you behind the scenes on the podcast today. Join me as I share some "in real-time" challenges in front of me- and what I'm doing to embrace rest and reject perfectionism. Here's a hint- awareness of the need for rest and relaxation does not immunity from the culture of relentless productivity. I encourage you to continue taking time for rest, for relaxation, for creativity, and to just BE. It can be difficult sometimes to take a break for yourself. When you care about others, when you are accustomed to being of service in some capacity to others- it may feel hard to carve out time for yourself but you can't pour from an empty cup. We live in a culture that rewards creativity and innovation for the purpose of consumption and profit. The economics of capitalism tells us we are creating value only when there is an economic gain tied to that creation. And in part, this what encourages folks to turn something they love doing, something they love CREATING into a side hustle or a business. This is when folks are told do something you love and you will never work a day in your life. Well this is the type of creativity we are NOT talking about on today's episode. We are not talking about monetizing your creations. We are not talking about creativity for the purpose of consumption. Today on the podcast I am talking about creativity that is just FOR YOU. Creation done simply for the joy of it. It may require going back to a time when you didn't have responsibilities, and seeing what you use to do that felt good. This is the time to get introspective. Join us on today's podcast to learn why it's so important we make this commitment to ourselves. Today on the podcast I'm talking about the various falsehoods being promoted and upheld within the personal finance and personal development space. These are the falsehoods that infiltrate our minds and our hearts when it comes to money, debt, worth, value, purpose, and passion. These are the falsehoods that can bring up feelings of shame and doubt around how we think about ourselves and our efforts. These are the falsehoods that also spread misinformation about whose work in the world is treated with dignity and respect-and whose work in the world is treated as menial and unworthy of respect. So how do we start to remedy some of these falsehoods? How do set the record straight and get on the path to making right what has been wrong? Today on the podcast we are talking about how we take care of ourselves- especially when things are feeling really heavy and hard. There is a lot of information and talk about self-care and all the different ways one can promote self-care in your life. From self-care practices that are indulgent and luxurious to self-care practices that helps us protect our energy and our boundaries. But what about community care? The type of care that comes from being in relationship with others? This is not a new idea or novel concept- since the beginning of time human beings have engaged in community care. So how do we bring this age old way of living into our lives today? This is what we are talking about on the podcast. Today on the podcast we are talking about the power of everyday people-specifically the power we have with our daily choices, with our actions, with our words, with what we speak about and what are silent about- ultimately the power we have to create a society and culture where we are all valued, where we are all safe, and where we all embrace our shared humanity. How do we use this power? By rooting out white supremacy culture (aka white supremacy delusion). Because white supremacy culture at its core- is violent. And the violence of white supremacy culture comes in all forms- there is direct violence, structural and systemic violence, interpersonal violence, and collective violence. There is violence to the mind, heart, and psyche. There is violence to the spirit and violence to the soul. There is violence that is passed down from generation to generation. And there is the violence of silence and complicity. The violence of white supremacy culture is all-encompassing. The good news is this- we can root out white supremacy culture. We can deprive it of oxygen and not allow it to spread. Tune into today's episode is to learn 5 actions you can take to root out white supremacy culture. This is how we f*ck up the oppression getting in our way- in our day-to-day lives, at the individual level and the collective level. Today on the podcast I am covering some topics that came up during the workshop I held a few weeks ago. The workshop was titled "Where The F*ck Is My Money" and I covered some key concepts around Disappearing Money Syndrome- and that is when you have money coming but you don't know where it's going. I talked about the common reasons your money might be disappearing and how to manage your money in way that goes way beyond budgets. But in addition to money tactics, with me you are always going to get the bigger picture as well. We talked about why it matters for justice informed people to have more money and more power. I covered what I call the money mindset villains- specifically Debt Shaming Culture and the Mindset Masquerade. I talked about how it's important to understand the language of finance and not internalize the oppression found in the language of money...and of course I talked about the importance of knowing your values when it comes to decision making around your money- because money does not spend itself. This was a free workshop and if you missed it, you can still get access to the recording by signing up for the guide to More Money, More Power- the link is below in the show notes. Today on the podcast I'm covering some of the questions and topics that came up during the workshop. I broke up the questions into major themes I want to cover. Theme #1 is about debt and investing Theme #2 is about money management systems including budgets and how to keep track of bills Theme #3 is about money and relationships This is an important topic we are discussing today. Oppression occurs at the collective level and at the individual level. On today's podcast, I'm going to talk about what the f*ck does it really meant to "dismantle systems of oppression" because sometimes it may sound more complex than it really is. Anybody can dismantle systems of oppression- especially the one that show up in our day to day lives. I'm sharing 4 steps that will help you to identify the oppressive system- and break it down into pieces! Listen to today's episode to get insights on the following: Why it's important to trust your instincts when identifying oppressive systems in your life How to anticipate tactics that may be used against you by those benefiting from oppression Some of the common ways oppression shows up in our everyday lives This is an important topic we are discussing today. Today on the podcast I'm talking about the importance and power of knowing your energetic numbers. Most folks know what it means to run your numbers in terms of how you manage your money. But, I find that knowing your energetic numbers is just as important as knowing your financial numbers. Knowing your energetic numbers allows you to have quantifiable measures in place to mitigate you burning out and becoming completely depleted of your energy. Knowing your energetic numbers will help you navigate stressful circumstances in such a way where you are keeping some healthy boundaries, prioritizing your wellness, and letting yourself off the hook for feeling stressed. Too many times women can start to beat ourselves up for even having feelings of stress and anxiety- and that's the last thing we should be doing to ourselves. Tune into today's episode for the following insights: Learn how to uncover your personal energetic numbers Why knowing your energetic numbers is just as important as knowing your financial numbers Learn three powerful tactics on how to make energetic numbers a reality in your own life. Remember, awareness is not immunity when it comes to stress and anxiety BUT there are strategies and tactics we can use to mitigate the effects. As justice informed people it's important that we stay resourced and protect ourselves from burning completely out. Because we are fully resourced is when we are best positioned to amplify our power. On today's episode I am talking about what I call the Core Values Exchange and why it's so important for justice-informed people to expand our thinking and belief system around how we think about value and most importantly how we exchange value with others. This is what I know to be true about getting really deep into understanding one's core values- the actual decisions, beliefs, and choices we make will always reveal our truth and sometimes the truth is far from the reality. I take the Core Values Exchange concept and break it down further using real life examples of buying a cup of coffee and saving for retirement. I'm also going to walk you through an example of how to get bone deep into uncovering how you are showing up in your life as it relates to your core values. And I am going so much deeper than a simple google search bar exercise where you find a list of values that resonate with you and put it on sticky note as a reminder- no my friends we are getting bone deep on today's episode. Today on the show we are talking about the importance of help. And asking for help might be tough, and even when we do ask for help- actually getting it can feel impossible. But just because we know in our heads and our minds we are deserving of help and support- it doesn't always mean we feel like we actually deserve it. We may embrace not needing anyone or anything. We may find a sense of purpose and value in being the one who handles all the things, at work, at home and everything in between. And in making ourselves available for everything and everybody- we can lose sight of what we want for ourselves. So how do we push back against the feeling that we are not deserving of help? How do we disrupt the conditioning that has been placed within us to do everything for everybody? And to do it with a smile? Even during a health pandemic. If asking for help, or even feeling worthy of help is something hard for you to do- I want you to practice reframing "getting help" to "getting resourced." Because when you are adequately resourced, you have what you need to thrive. And when it comes to resources I think the fundamentals are the resources of time, energy, and money. Because time, energy, and money are sources of power. Thus when we are fully resourced with our time, with our energy, with our money- that's when we are best positioned to amplify our power. This is what we are talking about on today's episode. Tune in.
