On episode 151 I am delighted to be joined by the head of wellbeing at South Sydney Rabbitohs. Ian previously worked with the Gaelic Players Association in Ireland as Lead player development & wellbeing coach, to support inter-county players to develop their career and well being off the pitch.  Ian details his career progression from an internship to leading a core pillar of the GPA to being offered a position through LinkedIn to move to Australia and work with a professional rugby team in the National Rugby League.  We discuss promoting a growth mindset - challenging players to go from good to great, amateur vs professional environments, career development as an athlete and so much more! Ian also give his take on what makes a goat (greatest of all time) - Grateful, Ownership, Attention, Time.  A big thank you to Ian who made time during his schedule while visiting family at home in December 2022. I took a lot away from our conversation and look forward to following his career and his work with teams in the future!  instagram  https://www.instagram.com/ianreeves1/   LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/ian-reeves-23a088138/  Follow The Sideline Live Social Media channels:   https://twitter.com/thesidelinelive  https://www.instagram.com/thesidelinelive/  Recorded using Samson Q2 microphone, Edited using GarageBand If you are looking to set up your own podcast get in touch with the Prymal Productions team  www.prymal.ie

On episode 149 I am delighted to be joined by Head Coach at Team USA boxing Billy Walsh. From humble beginnings in Wexford to becoming a world renowned coach and mentor, Walsh's journey is a testament to his passion for the sport and pursuit of excellence.  Billy provides insights into managing an athlete in the ring, building the Irish High Performance boxing unit from sleeping on the floor of the gym to olympic gold medals and altering his accent for his new athletes in Colarado. He also offers a fantastic insight in managing and communicating with his athletes in the ring. As an athlete he competed in the  1988 Summer Olympics and has multiple Irish titles to his name. He began as Head coach of the Irish High Performance Boxing programme in 2003 and in 2016 was awarded IBA Coach of the year (Amateur). He moved to the USA and is now tasked with building the USA into a new boxing powerhouse. Billy was a joy to learn from and I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation. On episode 148 I am delighted to be joined Matthew Bell. An accomplished international player Matthew won over 100 caps for Ireland but experienced heartbreak as he was not selected to travel to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. At 26 years of age while pursuing his 3rd season of professional hockey in Germany, Matthew was diagnosed with a brain tumour the size of three golf balls. He underwent immediate intervention which prevented Matthew from experiencing a fatal brain haemorrhage. He was later transferred by air ambulance back to Northern Ireland to complete chemotherapy, radiotherapy. Matthew has 5 surgeries in 6 weeks and was bed bound as he had to learn to walk, talk, and eat again. During his 6 months in hospital he dreamt of setting back out on the pitch with his local club, Bambridge. While many including his father wondered would he ever run again, Matthew’s determination prevailed and on April 20th 2021, Matthew walked back onto the hockey pitch for his first training session in 587 days. Matthew is back competing at local level with his club and has recently gotten engaged to his Fiancé Jane. During his recovery he came across Clodagh Dunlop, a police officer who suffered a brain stem stroke. Matthew reached out to Clodagh on Instagram and she sent him his book. This inspired Matthew to document his own journey and last year he released his memoir Second Chances, and has kindly donated all proceeds to @friends_of_the_cancer_centre    Matthew’s story was brought to my attention by a close friend in late 2020 and I was delighted to connect with him during the launch of his book last year. His story is inspiring and a testament to his resilience & attitude. Wishing Matthew continued success on and off the hockey field. On episode 136 I am delighted to be joined by Paralympian sprinter Orla Comerford. At 11 years of age Orla’s eyesight deteriorated due to a condition called Stargardt's disease.  She competes in the T13 category and competed in the 2016 and 2021 Paralympic Games. Off the track Orla is a visual Artist who recently graduated from NCAD. I originally heard Orla’s story at the Sport Ireland Women in Sport Coaching event in late 2022 and was inspired by the efforts of her coaches to keep her involved and included in all sports. Orla has experienced spiralling ankle injuries however is back to her peak as she finished 4th in the 2023 World Championships in Paris with a PB of 12.14. Her performance earned a spot in the 2024 Paralympics games. Orla is refreshingly honest as we discuss her journey to date, the incredible coaches she has had from a young age, identity as an athlete, balancing athletics & art and so much more. It was such a pleasure recording with Orla and I’m looking forward to keeping up with her journey!  Enjoy 😊 Episode notes/Takeaways:  The positive effect and influences that coaches can have on athletes. Orla’s swimming coach taught her class to count their strokes in the pool, rather than singling Orla out and asking her to do something different by herself. Her coach recognised Orla’s condition and involved the entire group allowing her to be included, without Orla knowing it was tailored for her.  Accessible facilities: Orla makes a fantastic point of how the olympic village is built every 4 years to host the olympic & Paralympic Games and is completely accessible. However when she comes home to Ireland we lack accessible facilities. How can this be changed?  Dream, Determination, Dedication, Damo - Raheny Shamrocks Underage Athletics coach  “Think about the things you’re good at because you’re actually really good at them”… Orla worked with Jessie Barr, sports psychologist, in preparation for the Paralympic Games in Tokyo and was unfortunately experiencing a run of injuries. Jessie and Orla worked on focusing on what she can control and acknowledge what you are good at when you’re spiralling in negative thoughts.
On episode 135 I am delighted to be joined by TP/WTA Coach and @SotoTennis  performance coach Mike Digby. This led him down the path of pursuing work as hitting partner for the best tennis players in the world while they competed at top events & tournaments. Mike now resides in Spain coaching at Soto Tennis academy while also coaching two elite players on the world stage. His passion for tennis and performance coaching is infectious as we discuss all things performance, talent, 'The Performer' approach and so much more! We also share our some of our favourite moments of the popular tv show Ted Lasso (Which is a must watch!).
