The Success NP: Clinical Pearls for Nurse Practitioners

Dr. Annie DePasquale graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia with her medical degree. She completed her Facility Medicine Residency program at Georgetown University in Washington DC. She founded Collaborating Docs in 2020 by Dr. Annie who is a Board-certified Family Medicine physician who first-hand saw an unmet need of her NP colleagues who needed a supervising physician to practice independently. When Dr. DePasquale realized how hard it is for NPs to find a collaborating physician, she knew she had to do something. The hoops the nurse practitioners and physician assistants had to jump through to start practicing were too exhausting for anyone to handle alone. Dr. DePasquale benefited greatly from the mentorship of NPs throughout her career, especially when she was a green new grad, so she is very committed to giving back to the community that helped her so much. Wilson is a physician assistant and assistant professor. He completed a dual Master's in Physician Assistant Studies and Public Health at Touro University California. After PA school, he completed a PA Educator Fellowship and Cancer Care Fellowship before working as an inpatient hematology/oncology APP. In addition to his clinical and teaching roles, he also worked as an oncology informatics specialist and educator in health tech and IT. He is currently working on various passion projects including financial coaching and running The Finance Hospital. Wilson focuses on financial education and 1:1 coaching. He enjoys teaching student loans, personal finance, and investing topics! Stephanie is a practicing nurse practitioner. She completed her Masters in Nursing and Family Nurse Practitioner program at Samuel Merritt University. While she was in school, she continued working full-time as a blood and marrow transplant and oncology nurse. After finishing her NP training, she began working as an inpatient oncology APP. She recently completed her Master's in Business Administration and is working as an outpatient oncology nurse practitioner. Stacey Stenenga was born and raised in a small town in Michigan. Stacey joined the Air Force to see the world. After 14 years of living overseas and in multiple different states, Stacey moved to Colorado to settle down closer to family. Despite being a critical care nurse for 11 years, her income was nearly cut in half from relocating. In 2018, she found the book “Set for Life” by Scott Trench and became a devout student, learning as much as she could about real estate investing. Christian Costazza, is a RN BSN who was born in Italy in 1984. He grew up with a pretty challenging childhood, losing his dad when he was 10. He was bullied in middle school, went straight to work after high school, and decided that he wanted to change his life by pursuing his BSN in Nursing. He graduated in 2012 with a BSN. He opened the first nurse-led business in his hometown and decided that he wanted more, so he moved to Ireland with basic English skills. After a few rejections, he chose to study and landed a job in NICU. After a while, he moved to England, where he became a cath lab nurse and went through all the roles, from RN to Director of two departments. He then started looking into the personal development space after having a period of burnout in the middle of the COVID pandemic. He decided to move to the US last year. April Waddell, RN, BSN who is a CVICU PEDS RN with nursing experience in adult, medical imaging, emergency, PICU and NICU is on the podcast this week. Shira Page is an NP and clinical lactation counselor working in clinician engagement and education at Bobbie, an infant formula startup. Her career has centered around improving the clinical care of people in their most challenging moments. She studied nutrition and dietetics, followed by a Master Degree in Nursing at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Her clinical expertise includes endocrinology, women’s health, and weight medicine. She worked as a nurse practitioner at Mount Auburn Hospital, focusing on endocrine concerns during pregnancy and postpartum. After becoming a parent, she saw firsthand infant feeding challenges and became a certified lactation counselor (CLC). Before joining Bobbie, Shira was a Medical Director at a continuing medical education (CME) company, designing clinician education to improve patient outcomes. Introduction to guest: Melanie Graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and has primarily worked with the Pediatric Population for 4 years. Graduated with my BSN in 2018 after not getting into the professional program for the first time. She took that semester and regrouped, but took an opportunity to study abroad with her Nursing College to Kenya, Africa. She was there for 2 weeks doing community outreach, education, and being one with the Kenyans. FUN fact - her professor who took her is from Kenya and took them to the ‘hut’ she grew up in. She even got to meet her parents and have a meal. She also didn’t pass my NCLEX the first time. Sat there for the full 6 hours and answered all 275 questions. She got my report back and was nearly passing in almost every single category. She took it again and passed in 78 questions! She got her first job as a pediatric nurse at the bedside on an Acute Care floor. They primarily specialized in GI/GU, Endo & Pulm, but saw almost anything under the sun. They had a lot of chronic patients, lots of tubes, and longer stays. Melanie did that for almost 4 years before pausing bedside to support her fRNd’s in creative ways with Mel's Crafty Corner.
