Every day, we make hundreds—sometimes thousands—of tiny choices, from what to wear, what to eat, which emails to answer first, and even which route to take to work. Each decision chips away at our mental energy, leaving us feeling drained, unfocused, and overwhelmed. But what if you could take back that energy and use it for what really matters? Joe dives into the science and psychology behind decision fatigue, explaining how the human brain, while powerful, has a limited capacity for high-quality decisions each day. The more trivial choices we face early on, the less clarity we have for the big ones later—like building your business, nurturing relationships, or staying on track with your personal goals. Listeners will learn practical, real-world strategies for decluttering their decision-making process. Joe breaks down the concept of a “decision detox”—a structured way to simplify your environment and habits so you can spend less time choosing and more time doing. From creating routines that eliminate small daily choices to automating recurring tasks, he explains how to design a life that conserves your mental energy for what truly moves you forward. He also shares relatable stories about how successful entrepreneurs, athletes, and creatives manage their mental bandwidth. You’ll hear about people like Steve Jobs, who wore the same outfit every day to avoid wasting decision power, and athletes who follow strict routines before big games so they can focus entirely on performance. Joe also opens up about his own experiences—moments when his day got hijacked by too many small choices, leaving him feeling mentally drained before noon. By setting up simple systems and focusing on consistency over complexity, he found a way to reclaim that lost energy and apply it to creative work and long-term growth. This episode isn’t about giving up your freedom of choice—it’s about strategic simplicity. Joe helps you reframe your mindset around decision-making, showing that less clutter in your mind equals more clarity in your life. You’ll learn how to: •          Create a morning routine that minimizes early decision stress. •          Simplify your wardrobe, workspace, and digital environment. •          Automate repetitive tasks and payments. •          Set clear priorities so your decisions align with your values and goals. •          Use the “two-option rule” to avoid analysis paralysis. By the end of this episode, you’ll understand how to detox from the daily chaos of decision overload and step into a life that feels more intentional, focused, and energized. If you’ve ever felt mentally exhausted before the day was halfway through—or if you’re striving to be more productive without burning out—this episode is your roadmap to clearer thinking and renewed motivation. Tune in and discover how simplifying your life can supercharge your energy, creativity, and profits. These are the lessons people share at the end of their lives — not out of sadness, but as wisdom. And the truth is, we don’t have to wait until our final days to start living without regret. So today, let’s walk through what those regrets are, why they happen, and how you can make changes today to live your best life now.  [SEGMENT 1: Setting the Scene This episode was inspired by a book written by palliative care nurse Bronnie Ware, who spent years caring for people in their final weeks. She noticed common patterns — things people wished they had done differently. What’s powerful about this is that every single regret was preventable. They weren’t about money or success. They were about living authentically, loving deeply, and having courage. So let’s go through them — the top ten regrets of the dying — and talk about how you can avoid each one.  [REGRET #1: “I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself.” This one tops almost every list. People regret living to meet others’ expectations — parents, bosses, friends — instead of following their own path. So many of us play it safe. We silence that inner voice that says, “I want to write. I want to travel. I want to start my own business.” We tell ourselves it’s too late, too risky, or too selfish. But let me tell you — nothing is more selfish than not sharing your true gifts with the world. Action step: Ask yourself, “If I had five years left, what would I stop doing today?” Then take one step — just one — toward the life that feels authentic to you. [REGRET #2: “I wish I hadn’t worked so hard.” Now, this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t work hard — I’m all for hustle. But most people regret what they worked for. They missed time with their kids, their partners, their passions — chasing promotions that didn’t bring fulfillment. We need to redefine success. Success isn’t how much you make — it’s how much time you own. Action step: Schedule your priorities before your tasks. If family dinner matters — put it on your calendar like a meeting with your CEO. Because guess what? You are the CEO of your life. [REGRET #3: “I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings.” This one’s tough. People hold in anger, love, gratitude — everything. They fear rejection or conflict, so they stay silent. But unspoken words weigh heavy on the heart. Whether it’s telling someone you love them, or forgiving someone who hurt you — it’s never too late to speak your truth. Action step: Text, call, or write to someone you’ve been meaning to reach out to. Tell them what’s real. Even if it’s messy, it’s honest — and that’s freedom.  [REGRET #4: “I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.” Life gets busy. We move, change jobs, raise families — and somehow the people who made us laugh the hardest start fading from our lives. At the end, people often realize that friendship is one of life’s greatest currencies. Action step: Make a “connection list.” Five people who bring joy or meaning to your life. Reach out to one person a week — not with a text, but a real call or coffee. Relationships are profit you can’t measure in dollars.  [REGRET #5: “I wish I had let myself be happier.” Happiness isn’t a reward — it’s a choice. Many people stay stuck in old habits, fear change, or wait for “someday” to be happy. But happiness happens when we let go — when we stop needing everything to be perfect and just be present. Action step: Each morning, list three things you’re grateful for — even small ones. Gratitude flips your focus from what’s missing to what’s meaningful.  [REGRET #6: “I wish I had taken more risks.” Comfort zones are cozy, but nothing grows there. People regret the chances they didn’t take far more than the ones they did. Fear will always be there — but courage isn’t about eliminating fear. It’s about acting despite it. Action step: Take one small risk this week — something that scares you a little. Maybe start a conversation, pitch your idea, or book that trip.  [REGRET #7: “I wish I had taken better care of my body and mind.” Our bodies are the vehicles for our dreams. But so many people only realize that after neglecting their health for decades. Action step: Move a little more. Eat with intention. Sleep well. Meditate. Pray. Breathe. Your mind and body are partners in your purpose.  [REGRET #8: “I wish I had pursued my passions.” Remember those dreams you had as a kid? The art, the music, the invention — all the things you put on the shelf for “someday”? Someday never comes unless you create it. Action step: Pick up that passion again. Paint. Sing. Write. Build. Create something just because. Passion fuel’s purpose.  [REGRET #9: “I wish I had made a difference.” The dying often reflects not on what they got, but what they gave. They wish they’d left a legacy, big or small — something that made life better for others. Action step: Ask yourself, “Whose life can I touch today?” Kindness, volunteering, mentoring — it all matters. The ripple you start today could outlive you.  [REGRET #10: “I wish I’d lived more in the moment.” We spend so much time replaying the past or pre-living the future, that we forget now is the only time that’s real. People at the end of life often say they wish they’d noticed more sunsets, more laughter, more quiet moments. Action step: Put your phone down. Look around. Take a breath. Life is happening right now. So there they are — the ten most common regrets of the dying. But here’s the good news: You’re alive. That means it’s not too late. You can rewrite your story — one decision at a time. Live boldly. Speak honestly. Love deeply. And remember — profit isn’t just money. It’s time, purpose, peace, and love. Today, we’re diving into something a little different—something we often overlook because we’re so busy, so plugged in, and so surrounded by noise. The topic is silence. Now, when I say silence, I don’t just mean the absence of sound. I mean the presence of quiet moments where we can hear ourselves think, moments where creativity can bloom, and moments where our intuition and resilience can actually strengthen. Think about it: Some of the greatest minds in history used silence as part of their creative process. Einstein took long walks alone. Beethoven was known for retreating into quiet to hear the music in his head. Even today, leaders, artists, and innovators deliberately carve out space for silence. In this episode, we’re going to explore three big ways silence shapes us: 1.         How it boosts creativity 2.         How it awakens intuition 3.         And how it builds emotional resilience And along the way, I’ll share some stories, science, and a few practical ways you can invite silence into your life. So, let’s step into the quiet together. ________________________________________ Part 1: Silence & Creativity Here’s the truth: our brains were not designed for constant stimulation. We live in a world where the moment we wake up, we grab our phone, scroll social media, and fill our head with noise. The problem is, creativity doesn’t thrive in chaos. It thrives in the gaps. Neuroscience shows that when we give ourselves silence, the brain slips into what’s called the default mode network. That’s a fancy term for the state where our mind wanders, connects ideas, and solves problems we couldn’t figure out when we were actively “thinking.” Think about when your best ideas come. Is it when you’re in front of a spreadsheet? Or when you’re driving in silence, taking a shower, or walking alone? That’s silence doing its work. Take writers, for example. Maya Angelou would rent a hotel room—no distractions—just her, a notebook, and silence. She said it allowed her to listen to the words forming inside. Or inventors like Nikola Tesla, who would sit in complete silence, visualizing his inventions in his mind before ever touching a piece of metal. Practical tip: Here’s something you can try today. Instead of filling every gap with music, podcasts, or TV—pick one small window of silence. Maybe it’s ten minutes in the morning. Maybe it’s your commute without the radio. See what ideas surface. I remember a time when I was completely stuck on a project. I kept pushing, forcing the ideas, and nothing was coming. So, I shut everything off and went for a walk. By the end of that walk, I had the breakthrough I needed—and it wasn’t because I was working harder. It was because I gave silence space to do its job. ________________________________________ Part 2: Silence & Intuition Now, let’s talk about intuition—that inner voice we often ignore. We all have it. But here’s the problem: we drown it out with constant input. News alerts, texts, conversations, music, podcasts—there’s no room for the inner voice to speak. Psychologists say intuition is really the brain processing patterns faster than our conscious mind can. It’s like a supercomputer running in the background. But to access it, we need quiet. Many traditions across cultures understood this. Native Americans practiced vision quests—going into silence in nature to receive guidance. Monks use silence in prayer and meditation to connect with deeper wisdom. Even athletes use visualization in silence to prepare mentally for big moments. Practical exercise: Try this—before making a big decision, sit in silence for five minutes. Ask yourself the question. Don’t overthink it. Just sit. Then, notice the first thought, feeling, or image that comes. That’s often your intuition. I can tell you from personal experience—there have been moments when I ignored my intuition because I was too distracted, and I regretted it. And there were other times, when I gave myself that quiet pause, that I felt guided in the right direction. Silence is the doorway to that inner knowing. ________________________________________ Part 3: Silence & Emotional Resilience The third benefit of silence is emotional resilience. Life is loud—not just physically, but emotionally. We carry stress, we get overwhelmed, and our emotions pile up. Without moments of silence, we don’t process them. Studies show that silence can lower cortisol levels—the stress hormone. It can slow down the heart rate, reduce blood pressure, and create space between stimulus and response. That means, when something stressful happens, you’re less reactive and more resilient. Think about arguments. If you can step into silence—even for a few minutes—you can respond instead of react. That’s resilience. Silence has also been used as a form of healing. Veterans struggling with PTSD, for example, often benefit from silent meditation or time in quiet nature. It doesn’t erase pain, but it gives the nervous system a chance to reset. Practical strategy: Try starting your day with five minutes of silence—no phone, no TV, no distractions. Just sit with your breath. Or, try ending your day with silence before bed. It’s like hitting a reset button for your mind and emotions. The more we practice silence, the more resilient we become. Instead of being thrown off by life’s noise, we find a still point inside ourselves that doesn’t shake as easily. ________________________________________ Wrap-Up & Call to Action So, let’s recap. Silence shapes us in three powerful ways: •          It fuels creativity by letting ideas connect in the quiet. •          It strengthens intuition by allowing us to hear our inner voice. •          And it builds emotional resilience by calming our nervous system and giving us space to reset. Here’s my challenge for you: Today, carve out five minutes of silence. No distractions, no devices. Just be. See what comes up. You might be surprised at what you discover. And if you try this, I’d love to hear about your experience. Reach out, share your story—because silence, while personal, is something we can all learn from together. Thank you for joining me today. If you found this episode helpful, share it with someone who might need a little quieter in their life. Until next time, take a breath… embrace the silence… and let it shape you.   The Year of Profit podcast, hosted by Joe Shortridge, is your go-to resource for transforming every aspect of your life. Set yourself up for success by putting away 15% of your income each year.     Many people plan on working through retirement, but only a small percentage actually do.     Medicare doesn't cover all health expenses—especially deductibles, copays or any long-term care.     It's never too late to start saving for retirement, and you should do it with the help of an investment pro to give you confidence that you’re heading in the right direction. Its ok to ask for help I have a fanatical advisor for my retirement. Find Your Pros Listen, we all want to build wealth and have the retirement of our dreams. But it’s not going to happen if we’re getting sidetracked by all the naysayers and the misinformation swirling around. Get expert money advice to reach your money goals faster! There are myths about retirement everywhere. Maybe your angry broke uncle thinks “the little man can’t get ahead” or your buddy shared some sketchy financial “advice” on social media (stick to funny dance videos, TikTok). No matter where they come from, those myths and lies could keep you from taking the steps you need to take to secure your retirement future.   So, get ready, because today we’re going to bust the top six retirement myths so you can start building the retirement of your dreams—right now. Myth #1: I’ll Live Off Social Security Income This is a common one . . . but relying on the government to take care of you in retirement is dumb with a capital D. Here’s the reality: Living off Social Security will only lead to social insecurity. The problem is, there’s a huge gap between what future retirees think they’re going to receive from Social Security and what they’re actually going to get. Right now, retirees receive an average monthly income of $1,918 from Social Security.1 That’s about $23,000 per year. That’s barely enough to keep the lights on and put food on the table, let alone actually enjoy a comfortable retirement! And yet, a recent poll found that nearly 1 out of 5 Americans (17%) don’t expect to have any source of retirement income beyond Social Security.2 Yikes. And the news gets worse for those who aren’t retiring for a while, because the latest projections show that Social Security benefits will be slashed by more than 20% in 2033 unless Congress takes action.3   Do you really want the quality of your life to be dependent on how the Senate votes? If you want to travel the world, start that business, or pursue your dreams in retirement, this is your wake-up call. Social Security just isn’t going to cut it. It’s time to take matters into your own hands and start taking steps to secure your retirement future—today. Your retirement is your job—not the government’s. Myth #2: If I Invest Up to My 401(k) Match, I’ll Have Enough to Retire First of all, if your company offers you a match on your 401(k), take that match! It’s a fantastic place to start investing. But stopping at the 401(k) match is like running a marathon and stopping a quarter of the way into the race. We hate to break it to you, but you don’t get a medal for stopping at mile seven! If you really want to build a solid nest egg, you need to invest 15% of your income into retirement. And that means you have to invest beyond the match. Sound scary? Not if you’ve built a solid foundation for your finances first! When it comes to wealth building, we believe in the Baby Steps. And investing for retirement doesn’t happen until Baby Step 4. So, what are the first three steps? Before you start investing, you need to pay off all your debts (except your mortgage) and save up an emergency fund of 3–6 months of expenses. That frees up your most important wealth-building tool—your income. With no debt and a full emergency fund, you’ll have room in your budget to invest 15% of your income for retirement!   Once you’re ready, here’s what we recommend:     If you have a traditional 401(k): Contribute up to your employer’s match in your 401(k), then work with a pro to invest the rest in a Roth IRA. If you max out your Roth IRA and still haven’t hit 15% of your income, go back to your 401(k).     If you have a Roth 401(k): You’re in luck! As long as you have good mutual fund investment options, you can invest your full 15% in your workplace account. There’s a whole group of folks out there called Baby Steps Millionaires who have worked and saved their way to millionaire status using this strategy. They consistently invested 15% of their income into their 401(k)s and IRAs month after month, year after year . . . until one day they looked up and realized they had a million-dollar net worth!  Myth #3: I’ll Work Through Retirement Whether it’s those crushing health care costs, higher-than-expected living expenses, or simply because they can’t afford to retire, 75% of workers say they plan to work during their retirement years. And yet, just 30% of retirees actually end up working.4 Do you want to bet your future on those odds? Probably not. If you do work in retirement, it should be because you want to—not because you have to. So between now and then, you have to do all you can to set yourself up for a comfortable retirement without needing a job to pay the bills. If you’re struggling to take those steps, maybe it’s time to figure out why. You can start by learning how to control the way you behave with money. Check out Rachel Cruze’s book Know Yourself, Know Your Money, so you can learn more about why you handle money the way you do and what you can do about it now. Myth #4: Medicare Will Cover My Medical Expenses There’s a lot of confusion about Medicare (the government-provided health insurance program for folks age 65 or older) and what it can and can’t do. So, let’s clear the air here.  Medicare can give you affordable health insurance coverage for doctor visits, medication and hospitalization once you blow the candles out on your 65th birthday cake. That’s the good news. However, Medicare doesn’t cover the cost of deductibles, copays or any long-term care, like the care you’d receive in a nursing home or assisted living facility that lasts more than 100 days. Those costs are on you. That’s the bad news. This is really important because the biggest health expense in retirement is long-term care. Here are some numbers to keep in mind:     The median annual cost for care at an assisted living facility is $64,200, and a private room at a nursing home costs about twice as much ($116,800).5     Someone turning 65 years old today has almost a 70% chance of needing long-term care of some kind.6     In extreme cases, some couples could need up to $413,000 for health care expenses in retirement—even if they have Medicare.7 Listen, just like good ol’ Social Security, the future of Medicare is also pretty murky if you’re not retiring in the next few years. That’s because Congress might have to raise the eligibility age, increase premiums, or reduce coverage in order to cut costs and keep Medicare benefits going for future retirees. That means that regardless of Medicare, you need a plan to cover all these health costs in your golden years! Here’s how to safeguard your retirement from medical expenses:     Step 1: Get long-term care insurance the day you turn 60. It’s not a fun birthday gift, but you’ll reap the rewards if you or your spouse ever need this service.     Step 2: Kick your retirement savings into high gear. The sooner you realize you can’t rely on Medicare, the more time you have to ramp up your savings.     Step 3: Do you have an insurance policy with a Health Savings Account (HSA)? If you do, your HSA (think of it as a “Health IRA”) could help you fill the gap and pay for medical expenses that Medicare can’t pay for. Not only does the money you invest in an HSA grow tax-free, but you can also take out money in retirement to pay for medical expenses without paying any taxes on it. That’s a win-win! Myth #5: It’s Too Late for Me to Save for Retirement If you feel scared about your retirement future, here’s the truth: No matter how close you are to retiring, there’s st

I’m your host, Joe Shortridge, and today we’re diving into a topic that every single one of us has struggled with at some point: **confidence and self-worth.** Now, if you’ve ever walked into a room and felt like you weren’t good enough, or you’ve held yourself back from opportunities because of self-doubt, then this episode is for you. We’re going to talk about **proven, real-world strategies to build confidence, boost your self-worth, and step into your power.** So grab your coffee, settle in, and let’s start rewriting the story you’ve been telling yourself.”  SEGMENT 1: Understanding Confidence & Self-Worth * Define **confidence**: trusting your ability to handle situations. * Define **self-worth**: the belief that you *deserve* love, respect, and success. * Psychology piece: how childhood, failures, and comparison can erode self-worth. Childhood experiences like abuse or neglect create negative self-perceptions, while repeated failures foster feelings of inadequacy. These internal issues are amplified by social comparisons, particularly in the age of social media, leading to persistent self-criticism and diminished self-worth. Over time, this cycle erodes confidence, creating deeply ingrained negative beliefs that can only be countered through self-compassion, challenging negative thoughts, and focusing on personal strengths and achievements. * Message: “Confidence is not the absence of fear—it’s the decision to move forward anyway.”    SEGMENT 2: Proven Ways to Build Confidence 1. **Master Small Wins**    * Do one thing daily outside your comfort zone.    * Build momentum by stacking little victories.    * Example: speaking up in a meeting, trying a new workout, introducing yourself to someone new. 2. **Body Language & Physiology**    * How posture, eye contact, and tone of voice change your self-perception.    * Practical: “Power poses” for 2 minutes before an interview or presentation. 3. **Skill Building = Confidence**    * Confidence grows when competence grows.    * Example: Learning public speaking, money management, or fitness habits. 4. **Speak Kindly to Yourself**    * Replacing self-criticism with affirmations.    * Give the audience a sample affirmation: “I am capable. I am learning. I am enough.”    SEGMENT 3: Building Self-Worth 1. **Stop the Comparison Trap**    * Social media vs. reality.    * Ask: “Am I comparing my behind-the-scenes to someone else’s highlight reel?” 2. **Set Boundaries**    * Self-worth grows when you stop saying yes to everything.    * Example: protecting your time, energy, and relationships. 3. **Practice Gratitude**    * Daily gratitude journaling rewires the brain to focus on strengths.    * Ask listeners to write 3 things tonight that they appreciate about themselves. 4. **Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection**    * Reframe failures as feedback.    * Story: A well-known figure who failed repeatedly before succeeding (e.g., J.K. Rowling, Thomas Edison). Walt Disney had his first animation company go bankrupt and was fired from a newspaper for lacking imagination before creating Disneyland and Mickey Mouse. Stephen King faced rejection from publishers before finding success, many times ---  SEGMENT 4: Exercises & Takeaways   * **The Mirror Exercise:** Every morning, say one thing you love about yourself in the mirror. * **Confidence Journal:** Write down one win every night. * **Accountability Partner:** Find someone who supports your growth. * Invite listeners: “Pick just one of these exercises and commit to doing it this week.”   --- SEGMENT 5: Long-Term Habits to Maintain Confidence * Keep learning and growing. * Surround yourself with positive, uplifting people. * Practice mindfulness and meditation to quiet self-doubt. * Volunteer or mentor—serving others boosts self-worth.   --- “Confidence and self-worth aren’t things you’re born with—they’re things you build. Every day, with small steps, you can rewrite the way you see yourself. Remember: **you are enough, and you deserve success, love, and happiness.**   Thank you for tuning into the *Year of Profit* podcast. I’m your host, Joe Shortridge, and today we’re diving into a question I guarantee you’ve asked yourself at least once this week—probably even this morning: *Why am I always tired?*   Now, I’m not talking about the occasional tiredness after staying up too late watching Netflix, or after pulling a long shift at work. I’m talking about that *constant tiredness*. The kind where no matter how much you sleep, you never feel fully rested. The kind where you wake up tired, go through the day tired, and crawl back into bed—guess what—still tired.   Today, we’re going to break this down. We’ll talk about the physical, mental, emotional, and lifestyle causes of fatigue, and more importantly—how you can take back your energy and live a life that feels lighter, brighter, and more powerful.   You know, I want to share something personal here. For the longest time, I was feeling tired all the time. And not just the kind of tired where you stay up too late once in a while—I mean the kind of tired that follows you day after day. I was still doing the things I loved, like walking and riding my bike, but instead of feeling energized afterward, I felt drained. It was frustrating, because I thought, “I’m staying active, so why am I still exhausted?”   Then I started looking at what I was putting into my body and what I was allowing into my mind. I realized my diet wasn’t really supporting me—I was eating too many convenience foods, grabbing whatever was quick, and not paying attention to what my body truly needed. On top of that, my mindset wasn’t helping. I was carrying stress, telling myself I was just getting older, and accepting fatigue as my “new normal.” That’s when I decided something had to change. I began eating differently—more whole foods, more vegetables, more balanced meals—and slowly I started noticing a difference. But the real shift happened when I paired that with a better mindset. Instead of expecting to feel tired, I began expecting to feel strong and capable. That combination—better fuel for my body and a healthier outlook for my mind—made all the difference. And that’s when things really started to turn around. Not overnight, but little by little, I noticed I wasn’t dragging myself through the day anymore. I felt lighter, clearer, and more alive.     Segment 1: The Physical Roots of Fatigue Let’s start with the obvious: the body. Your body is a machine, and like any machine, it runs on inputs. Poor inputs = poor performance. * **Sleep**: We’ve been told we need 7–9 hours, but here’s the kicker—it’s not just about hours, it’s about *quality*. Deep sleep and REM are critical. If you’re waking up multiple times a night, scrolling on your phone before bed, or sleeping in a noisy environment—you’re not really resting.   **Diet**: Sugar highs, processed foods, too much caffeine—they create a rollercoaster. Energy spikes, then crashes. On the flip side, deficiencies like iron, B12, vitamin D, magnesium—they’re silent energy killers.   * Example: many people think they’re depressed or lazy when they’re actually just low on vitamin D. * **Hydration**: Dehydration as little as 2% can make you feel foggy. And we often confuse thirst with hunger. * **Exercise**: Sedentary living makes your body sluggish. Paradoxically, moving gives you energy. That 20-minute walk you don’t “feel like” doing? That’s the very thing that would wake you up. *When was the last time you had a full week of truly restorative sleep, daily hydration, and consistent movement?*   --- Segment 2: Mental and Emotional Exhaustion Now let’s shift gears—because even if your body’s in good shape, you can still feel wiped out. Why? The mind. * **Stress**: Living in constant fight-or-flight. Your body keeps pumping stress hormones like cortisol, which leaves you drained. * **Decision fatigue**: You make hundreds of decisions daily. What to wear, what to eat, how to respond to texts. Each one chips away at your mental energy. * **Emotional baggage**: Carrying resentment, guilt, or anxiety? That weighs heavier than any dumbbell. * **Lack of purpose**: When you wake up with nothing to look forward to, even brushing your teeth feels exhausting. Energy flows where passion goes.   --- Segment 3: Lifestyle and Habit Traps Here’s where many of us trip up: the little daily habits that drain us.   * **Screen time**: Blue light before bed messes with melatonin. Late-night scrolling is stealing your sleep. * **Irregular routines**: Your body loves rhythm. Constantly changing bedtimes and wake-up times confuse your internal clock. * **Overcommitment**: Saying “yes” to everyone else leaves nothing for you. Burnout often disguises itself as tiredness. * **Stimulant dependency**: Coffee isn’t the enemy, but if you’re relying on 5 cups a day—you’re masking the problem, not solving it. *Relatable humor moment:* “How many of you have ever said, ‘I’m exhausted,’ while holding a double espresso in your hand?”   --- Segment 4: Practical Solutions and Energy Hacks Now let’s flip it—what can we *do*?   1. **Audit your sleep** – Same bedtime, dark cool room, no screens an hour before bed. 2. **Fuel your body** – Whole foods, hydration, and check nutrients with your doctor. 3. **Move** – Daily, even just light exercise. 4. **Declutter your mind** – Journaling, meditation, breathing exercises. 5. **Energy management** – Work on your most important tasks when you’re naturally most alert. 6. **Boundaries** – Learn the power of “no” to protect your energy. 7. **Purpose check** – Align daily actions with what truly matters to you.   --- Segment 5: Interactive Q\&A / Reflection Even if you don’t have live callers, you can do this by: * Reading out common questions people ask about fatigue. * Example: “Do power naps really help?” → Yes, if under 30 minutes. * “What about energy drinks?” → Short boost, long crash. * “Can mindset really change energy?” → Absolutely—positive expectation increases dopamine, which fuels motivation. * What drains me most right now? * What gives me energy? * What one small change could I start today?   --- Segment 6: Closing Motivation   Here’s the truth: being tired all the time isn’t normal, and it isn’t how life is meant to be lived. Constant fatigue is your body and mind’s way of raising a red flag. And you have the power to respond.   Imagine how different your life could feel if you woke up energized, moved through your day with clarity, and went to bed satisfied. That’s possible. It doesn’t happen overnight, but small consistent changes stack up.   Energy is the foundation for everything. It’s the currency that lets you pursue your goals, nurture your relationships, and show up as your best self. So don’t just accept being tired as your “normal.” Fight for your energy. Protect it. Rebuild it.   Thank you for spending this time with me on the *Year of Profit*. The days are shorter, the skies are gray, and suddenly your energy just isn’t what it used to be. You feel less motivated, maybe a little sad, and even the simplest tasks feel heavier. It’s not just in your head—this is real, and it’s something millions of people experience every year. For some, it can be full-blown Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD. But for most of us, it’s just that low-energy slump that comes from less sunlight, colder weather, and being indoors more often. Think about it—we’re basically solar-powered. When the sun disappears earlier in the day, our internal clock gets thrown off, and our body produces more melatonin, the hormone that makes us sleepy. That’s why you might feel tired even when you’ve slept enough.   Segment 2: How the Winter Blues Affect Your Life The thing about the winter blues is that it doesn’t just affect your mood—it affects your profit. Your mental and emotional state has a direct connection to your success. If you’re less motivated, you might procrastinate more. If you’re down, you might miss opportunities. You know, as humans, we’ve always been controlled by light. Long before electricity, our ancestors rose with the sun and rested when it set. Our bodies are wired to follow what’s called a circadian rhythm—that natural 24-hour cycle based on light and darkness.   Here’s the problem: in the winter, the days are shorter, and we get far less sunlight. That lack of light confuses our internal clock. Our bodies start producing more melatonin, the hormone that makes us sleepy, and less serotonin, the chemical that helps keep our mood balanced.   So it’s no wonder we feel off—more tired, less motivated, even sad. Our biology is literally responding to the environment. That’s why the winter blues hit so many of us. It’s not weakness. It’s science. But here’s the good news: the winter blues are not permanent. You can take action to shift your energy and mindset. Light hitting your eyes is an ingrained part of our life from the   Segment 3: Strategies to Beat the Winter Blues Let’s talk about a few ways to beat it: Get More Light Natural light is the best medicine. Even 15 minutes outside can reset your system. Open the curtains, take a walk, or invest in a light therapy lamp. Move Your Body Exercise releases endorphins—your natural mood boosters. It doesn’t have to be intense. A 10-minute walk, some stretching, or even dancing in your kitchen works wonders. Eat Foods That Fuel You Comfort food is tempting, but heavy carbs and sugar make you crash. Add more fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins to keep your energy steady. Stay Connected Winter can make us withdraw. But human connection is one of the best cures. Call a friend, join a group, or spend quality time with family. Focus on Growth Use the slower months as a chance to invest in yourself. Read, learn, journal, or plan your goals. That way, when spring comes, you’re already ahead.   Segment 4: Mindset Shift The winter blues are temporary, but the way you respond can change everything. Instead of seeing winter as a season of loss—less light, less energy—see it as a season of preparation. Just like the trees are storing energy for spring, so can you. Remember: your success and happiness don’t have to hibernate. You can keep building, keep growing, and keep thriving, no matter what the season looks like outside. SAD is diagnosed based on symptoms that occur consistently during certain seasons for at least two years. A healthcare professional will also rule out other potential causes of depression, such as medical conditions or substance abuse. Treatment: Treatment for SAD typically involves a combination of:     Light therapy: Exposure to bright light, either from sunlight or a special light box, can help increase serotonin levels. Psychotherapy: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can help individuals identify and change negative thoughts and behaviors that contribute to SAD. Antidepressant medications: In some cases, antidepressants may be prescribed to improve mood and reduce symptoms. Prevention:     Get regular sunlight exposure, especially in the morning hours.     Use a light box during the winter months.     Engage in activities that boost mood, such as exercise, social interactions, and hobbies.     Maintain a healthy diet and get enough sleep.     Seek professional help if you experience symptoms of SAD.   Additional Information:     SAD is more common in women than men.     People with a family history of depression or other mood disorders are at increased risk for SAD.     SAD can sometimes resolve on its own as the seasons change

But just because debt is “normal” doesn’t mean it’s good for you. The truth is, we hate debt around here because of all the problems it causes. Debt robs your present and steals from your future. Debt keeps you stuck in a cycle that makes it impossible to build wealth. And debt can weigh you down so much you can’t see a way out. But even though debt comes with all that baggage, people still make all sorts of excuses for staying in debt instead of taking steps to become debt-free. And spoiler alert, all of them are bogus. Don’t fall for any of these 12 lies that keep people in debt: 1. Lie: Debt is normal (or even helpful). Like we said, it’s totally normal to have debt hanging around your neck. Don’t believe us? A shocking 77% of Americans have some type of debt—that’s nearly 8 out of every 10 people!1 And how many times have you heard one of these money myths: Avoid the traps and manage your money the right way with Financial Peace University. You need to have a good credit score! (No, you don’t.) There are good debts—and tax benefits! (No, there really aren’t.) It’s okay to have a car payment and student loans! (No, it’s not.) Those are straight-up lies about money that the toxic culture is shoving down our throats. What’s so great about owing money to somebody? Nothing! And if you think it’s easy to stay on top of your debt, our research shows that 1 in 5 Americans have fallen deeper into debt since June of 2022. That’s not staying on top. That’s being buried alive. Living in debt kills the American Dream. Don’t you want to start living your dreams sooner? Hey—here’s some honest-to-goodness good news: You can! Seriously. Just be ready to be different. If being in debt is normal, choose to be weird. 2. Lie: I have plenty of time to plan for my financial future. It’s easy to tell yourself you have lots of time before you need to plan for your later years. But you shouldn’t put off being responsible with money or building a secure future. And when you’re in debt, you’re doing both of those things. As you continue to pay for your past, you can’t firm up your future—or even your present!  Stop saying “one day” and start moving forward—today! That means following the 7 Baby Steps. Get yourself $1,000 in the bank as a starter emergency fund. Then use the debt snowball method to pay off your debt once and for all! You’ll finally have your entire income back in your hands, to build security and wealth by saving up a full emergency fund, investing and paying off your mortgage. Don't fall for the "I have plenty of time" lie. Start planning your financial future now so by Baby Step 7, you're living the life you've always wanted! 3. Lie: You don’t make enough money to live debt-free. Whether it takes you six months or six years, paying off your debt is possible no matter what your income looks like. Of course, making more money will help you get out of debt faster. The great news is, you can increase your income right now, These days, the options are pretty endless for bringing in extra cash. You could get a side hustle by driving for Uber or Lyft. Or deliver food through Grubhub or DoorDash. Don’t have extra time? Go online and sell that extra television on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist. Or dig through closets and sell unworn clothes on Poshmark or thredUP. You'll be clearing clutter and making money at the same time. A win-win! Or maybe it’s time to get bold enough to ask for a raise or spruce up your resumé and start looking for a higher-paying job. Don’t let a few dollar signs come between you and being debt-free. 4. Lie: The sacrifices aren’t worth it. Sometimes it’s not about making more—it’s about spending less. We know, it’s hard to say no to eating at restaurants and going on vacation. But remember, it’s just a short-term sacrifice for long-term financial peace. And a lifetime of freedom from debt is worth it! So, ask yourself: What am I willing to give up now so I can get out of debt forever?     Try a no-spend month where you don't buy any nonessential items.     Give up that daily Starbucks fix and brew your coffee at home—while you pack up your brown bag lunch.     Skip your expensive vacation at the beach and do a budget-friendly staycation. Or even better—skip vacationing altogether until you’re debt-free.     Sell your super nice car that comes with a monthly payment and pay cash for one you can afford. Right now. Is this challenging? Yes! Is it temporary? Also, yes! Once you’re debt-free, you can go back to hitting up the drive-thru for your half-caf, honey lavender latte with extra foam. Or not. Maybe you’ll prefer your home-brewed drip coffee by then. Either way, you’ll be calling the shots with your income without any debt holding you down. 5. Lie: Having a budget limit your freedom. Some people in debt don’t even know how much debt they have (or how much it’s costing them), because they’re not keeping track of where their money goes each month. Why? Well, a lot of people believe this lie that a budget squashes your freedom. But the truth is, a budget gives you freedom. A budget is a plan for your money. And when you have a plan for every dollar you make, you’ll finally be in control of your money instead of wondering why you’re so broke. People say budgeting makes them feel like they got a raise, because they “find” money they were wasting—because they didn’t have a plan for it. 6. Lie: You need to keep up appearances. The neighbors down the street just redid their kitchen, so now you think yours needs an upgrade too. Your old friend from high school just posted a picture of her new BMW on Facebook, so now you feel like you need a flashy new car. We hate to break it to you, but it’s a big old nope on both of those things. This comparison game is known as the dreaded “keeping up with the Joneses” mindset. Everything on the outside might look shiny, but little do you know, the Joneses have a BMW with a monthly payment higher than their mortgage, and they took out a huge loan to renovate that kitchen. If you want to stop being in debt, then don’t let people who are in debt be your role models. 7. Lie: “I want it, and I want it now!” A lot of people in debt love material things (like those Joneses we talked about). The more you have, the more powerful and confident you feel—and you can never have it soon enough. But it’s all fake. Here’s the deal: If you can’t pay cash for it, you can’t afford it. Buying stuff with debt will only weigh you down.   Between credit cards and buy now, pay later plans, our culture has twisted what it means to actually be able to afford something. Society screams, “Have it now, pay for it later!” But that’s just another crooked lie about money that’ll send you straight into piles of debt and years of regret. The reality is, you’ll end up spending more on monthly payments—plus interest—than you would have spent if you had just bought the thing outright. Oh, the irony. Instead, don’t buy things you can’t pay for right now—ever. 8. Lie: Not using debt is a scary lifestyle change. If you’ve always used a credit card and you’ve always had a car payment, it might be hard to imagine how you’ll get by without them. And let’s face it—being in debt can be comfortable. At first. But it’s kind of like slowly cooking in a pot of boiling water. It’s warm and cozy at first, but before you know it, you’ve been boiled alive. Yikes! The reality is, it’s just as easy to buy things without debt. A debit card works the same way a credit card does (yes, even for hotels and rental cars). And guess what? People still accept cash. Some even prefer it so they don’t have to deal with paying those transaction fees. (Because someone has to pay for your credit card rewards.) 9. Lie: Debt isn’t a big deal. As long as I make the minimum payments every month, it’s not that big of a deal. Uh . . . yes, it’s still a big deal—and an expensive one! Your credit card has sneaky hidden fees and interest. Your student loans are growing bigger by the day. Your leased car is losing value as you read this sentence. And if all that wasted money isn’t bad enough, think about all the potential money you’re wasting. For instan

But sometimes, the biggest breakthroughs come not from what we add, but from what we subtract. That’s right. Today’s episode is all about the 10 things you need to stop doing for a better life. As I go through this list, I want you to think about which ones hit home for you. You don’t need to change everything overnight—just pick one or two, and start there. Small shifts lead to big results.     1. Stop Comparing Yourself to Others Comparison is a trap. We scroll through social media, see someone with a bigger house, a nicer car, or a more “exciting” life, and we instantly feel behind. But remember—social media is just a highlight reel. You don’t see the arguments behind the vacation photos, or the credit card debt behind the new car. When you compare yourself to others, you’re not being fair to yourself—you’re comparing your real life to someone else’s staged version. Instead, compare yourself to who you were yesterday. Are you growing? Are you moving forward? That’s the only race worth running. To stop comparing yourself to others, recognize that you are only seeing their "outsides" and not their full reality, identify your personal triggers like social media, practice gratitude and self-compassion, focus on your own progress rather than others' achievements, and limit exposure to situations that fuel comparison, such as taking a break from social media.     2. Stop Saying “Yes” to Everything We live in a culture that glorifies being busy. But saying yes to everything means you’re saying no to your own priorities. Think about it—how many times have you agreed to something, then regretted it because it drained your energy? Maybe you said yes to another work project when you were already stretched thin. Or maybe you agreed to a social event when what you really needed was rest. Saying no doesn’t make you rude—it makes you wise. Protect your energy like it’s your most valuable asset—because it is.     1. Understand Your "Why"     Identify your priorities:     Determine what truly matters to you and if saying "yes" to requests aligns with those goals. Address people-pleasing: Recognize if a fear of rejection or a need for approval is driving your habit of saying "yes". 2. Set Boundaries     Define your limits:     Establish what you are and are not willing to commit your time and energy to.     Know your capacity:     Be aware of your current workload and time commitments so you don't overextend yourself. 3. Practice Saying "No"     Embrace the pause:     Instead of an immediate "yes," take a moment to check your schedule or consult with others before giving a definitive answer. Use prepared phrases: Have polite "no" phrases ready, such as "Thanks for thinking of me, but I'm unable to commit to that right now" or "Let me get back to you on that". Offer alternatives: If possible, suggest a different solution, like doing the task later or finding someone else to help. 4. Shift Your Mindset     Embrace "JOMO":     Replace the fear of missing out (FOMO) with the joy of missing out (JOMO), understanding that protecting your time is a positive choice. Prioritize yourself: Realize that you are not responsible for everyone's problems and that saying "no" is a form of self-care. Accept consequences: Understand that some people may be disappointed, but true friends will respect your boundaries. 5. Practice and Reinforce     Start small:     Begin by saying "no" to less significant requests to build your confidence. Be kind to yourself: If you slip up and say "yes" when you meant "no," don't overthink it. Focus on how you'll approach the next situation.   3. Stop Living in the Past To stop living in the past, acknowledge and process past events, practice mindfulness and gratitude to stay present, engage in new activities and hobbies, set achievable goals, and build a supportive social network. Shifting your focus to what you can control, cultivating self-compassion, and accepting past experiences as lessons rather than something to dwell on are also key steps in moving forward. Strategies to Shift Your Focus       Practice Mindfulness: Actively focus on the present moment, whether by observing your breath, savoring a cup of tea, or engaging fully in a conversation. This trains your mind to remain in the "here and now" rather than drifting to the past. Cultivate Gratitude: Acknowledge and appreciate the good things you have in your life right now. This shifts your attention away from what is lacking and reinforces a sense of contentment in the present. Challenge Negative Thoughts: When you notice yourself dwelling on past negative experiences, gently challenge those thoughts. Recognize that your brain might be trying to protect you, but this can hinder your present and future progress. Engage in New Experiences: Make the present engaging and satisfying by trying new things, learning new skills, or revisiting old hobbies. This provides new, positive experiences to focus on. Set and Achieve Small Goals: Break down larger goals into smaller, achievable steps. Accomplishing these goals creates momentum and a sense of progress in the present.       Acknowledge and Accept:     Don't deny the pain of past events. Instead, acknowledge your feelings and view past experiences as a source of lessons that have shaped you, rather than something to be consumed by. Practice Forgiveness: Forgive yourself and others for past mistakes. Holding onto past grievances can keep you stuck and prevent you from moving forward. Embrace Self-Compassion: Treat yourself with kindness and understanding, just as you would a friend. Understand that mistakes are a part of human growth and that you are not defined by past failures. Create Empowering Rituals: Develop small rituals that help you release the past, such as writing down regrets and symbolically discarding them, or creating a personal letting-go ceremony.     Actions to Take     Socialize:     Nurture existing relationships and seek out positive, supportive people to surround yourself with. Act on Lessons Learned: Use past experiences to inform your future decisions and actions. Bring Order to Your Life: Establish routines and structure to create a more present and engaged daily experience. Consider Professional Support: If you find it difficult to move on, consider speaking with a therapist or counselor who can provide additional tools and support 4. Stop Waiting for the “Perfect Time” The message "stop waiting for the perfect moment" encourages taking action now rather than delaying until conditions are ideal, which is often a procrastination tactic. It emphasizes that the perfect moment rarely exists and that starting with imperfect action is better than remaining stagnant. Here's why this message is important and how to apply it: Why wait for the perfect moment is a problem:       Procrastination: The idea of a perfect moment often leads to putting things off indefinitely.   Missed opportunities: Waiting can mean missing out on chances to learn, grow, and achieve goals. Lack of progress: Perfectionism can be paralyzing, preventing any action from being taken. Stagnation: Without action, you remain in the same place, potentially feeling unfulfilled.   Why starting imperfectly is beneficial:     Doing something, even if it's not perfect, provides valuable insights and helps refine the approach.   Progress over perfection: Celebrate small steps and acknowledge that every effort contributes to overall progress. Learning from mistakes: Imperfect action allows for learning and adaptation, leading to better outcomes in the long run. Momentum and confidence: Taking action, even small steps, can build momentum and boost confidence for further steps. Embracing the present: The present moment is the only one you can control, so focus on making the most of it.   5. Stop Blaming Others This one is tough, because blaming feels good in the moment. If your boss is unfair, your partner is difficult, or the economy is rough—it’s easy to say, “Well, it’s their fault I’m stuck.” But here’s the problem: the moment you blame, you give away your power to change. You can’t control other people or circumstances, but you can always control your response. When you take responsibility, you take back your power.     Change your view of mistakes: See mistakes as valuable chances to learn and grow, rather than as painful shortcomings that protect your ego. Replace defensiveness with understanding: Instead of reacting defensively or judgmentally, try to understand the situation and other people's roles in it. Embrace personal responsibility: Recognize that taking responsibility for your actions is empowering and allows you to move forward, rather than giving your power away to external circumstances. Practice Empathy and Responsibility     Take the other person's perspective: Try to understand another person's thoughts, feelings, and experiences by putting yourself in their shoes. Focus on solutions, not blame: When issues arise, focus on finding mutually beneficial solutions rather than assigning fault. Be specific in apologies: When you do apologize, make your apology specific to your part in the situation   6. Stop Overcommitting Our culture rewards the hustle. But constantly being “busy” doesn’t mean you’re productive. It just means you’re exhausted. Instead of doing ten things halfway, pick two or three things and give them your full energy. Quality beats quantity every time. Remember—the people who make the biggest impact in life aren’t the ones who do ever

But the truth is, some of the most harmful clutter is the kind you don’t immediately see: expired food pushed to the back of the refrigerator, canned goods in the pantry that are years past their date, old cosmetics in the bathroom cabinet, or clothes in your closet that haven’t been worn in a decade. These items may be hidden from sight, but they are not hidden from your subconscious.   Our minds are wired to notice disorder, even when it’s behind a closed drawer or cabinet. That unopened closet door or stuffed junk drawer sends a subtle but persistent signal that something is unfinished. Over time, this builds into mental stress, anxiety, and a sense of being overwhelmed. The unseen clutter represents unmade decisions: Do I keep this? Should I throw it away? Could I use it someday? Each small question drains a bit of your mental energy. Multiply that by every hidden corner of your home, and you begin to see how much unseen clutter weighs on your daily life.   This hidden mess also impacts productivity and focus. A cluttered environment—whether visible or not—creates a background noise in the brain. It’s like trying to work in a room where a radio is quietly buzzing static in the corner. You may not consciously notice it, but it affects your ability to concentrate, create, and move forward with clarity. By clearing out what you no longer need, you free up not just physical space but also valuable mental bandwidth.   There’s also a financial angle to unseen clutter. How many times have you bought a new jar of spice because you couldn’t find the one buried in the back of the cupboard? Or spent money on clothes only to realize you already owned something similar hidden away? Clutter costs money in replacement purchases, storage space, and missed opportunities. When you declutter, you gain awareness of what you truly have, which leads to smarter spending habits.   But the benefits go beyond dollars. Decluttering is an act of self-care. It creates an environment that supports calmness, productivity, and growth. Walking into a kitchen with only fresh food in the fridge or opening a closet where every item fits and feels good to wear creates a sense of ease and empowerment. It reinforces the idea that you are in control of your space—and your life.   In this episode, we’ll talk about simple, step-by-step ways to tackle unseen clutter. From quick five-minute cleanouts to larger weekend projects, you’ll discover how to make the process manageable, rewarding, and even fun. We’ll also explore the science behind why letting go of old items lightens your mental load and how a decluttered space can become the foundation for achieving your personal and financial goals.   It’s time to stop letting hidden messes hold you back. Join me as we uncover the unseen clutter in your home and learn how clearing it can unlock more peace, focus, and profit in your life.   The Year of Profit podcast, hosted by Joe Shortridge, is your go-to resource for transforming every aspect of your life. Whether they’re in your personal life, workplace, or even your entrepreneurial circles, narcissists can have a profound impact on your ability to grow, focus, and thrive.   We’ll start by breaking down what narcissism truly is — beyond the pop culture stereotypes. Narcissists aren’t just “self-centered” people; they often display a consistent pattern of manipulation, gaslighting, and exploitation to maintain control and boost their own ego. They crave admiration, avoid accountability, and are often experts at making you feel like you’re the problem.   We’ll explore the different types of narcissists you might encounter:     The Grandiose Narcissist – The “look at me” personality who thrives on attention, status, and power.     The Covert Narcissist – More subtle, often playing the victim to manipulate emotions.     The Malignant Narcissist – The most destructive type, blending narcissism with aggression and cruelty.   Understanding these categories is crucial, because each type requires a different approach when it comes to protecting yourself and your boundaries.   Next, we’ll discuss the red flags you should never ignore. From constant one-upmanship and backhanded compliments to never taking responsibility for mistakes, these signs often reveal themselves early — if you know what to look for. Spotting these patterns can save you from years of frustration and emotional damage.   But recognizing narcissists is only half the battle. The real challenge is learning how to manage your interactions with them without losing your sense of self. We’ll walk you through strategies that help you stand firm, including:       Setting clear boundaries and sticking to them.     Refusing to engage in emotional games.     Learning to detach from their approval.     Protecting your mental health with strong support systems. We’ll also tackle a controversial but necessary question: Should you cut narcissists out of your life entirely? While it’s not always possible — especially in business or family situations — we’ll share tools to minimize their influence, keep your focus on your goals, and avoid being pulled into their toxic patterns.   This episode is not about demonizing people with narcissistic tendencies, but about empowering you to take control of your environment. The truth is, a narcissist’s behavior often has nothing to do with you — it’s about their own unresolved insecurities and needs. Understanding that can help you keep perspective and protect your energy.   By the end of this conversation, you’ll be able to spot narcissistic traits faster, keep your confidence intact, and make decisions that protect both your personal peace and your path to success.   If you’ve ever wondered why certain people always seem to drain you, derail your projects, or make you doubt yourself, this episode could be the turning point. Here are some things you can say.     "I'm not comfortable with that."         Establishes your personal boundaries without being confrontational.     "I need some time to think about this."         Gives you space to process and avoid making hasty decisions under pressure.     "Let's agree to disagree."         Avoids unnecessary conflict and ends circular arguments.     "This conversation isn't productive right now."         Stops unproductive arguments and sets a boundary for constructive dialogue.     "I will not tolerate being spoken to this way."         Firmly addresses disrespectful behavior.     "I'm entitled to my feelings and opinions."         Asserts your right to your own emotions and viewpoints.     "I won't engage in this conversation if it continues like this."         Sets a clear boundary for healthy communication.     "Please respect my need for space."         Requests personal space and sets a physical boundary.     "That's your perspective, not mine."         Differentiate your views from the narcissist's, maintaining your stance.     "I have the right to say no."         Affirms your autonomy and the ability to refuse. Phrases to Deflect Manipulation Phrases to Deflect Manipulation     "I'm not going to argue about this."         Ends pointless arguments and manipulation attempts.     "I understand you feel that way."         Acknowledges their feelings without agreeing or escalating the situation.     "Let's focus on the facts."         Redirects the conversation to objective information.     "That's an interesting perspective."         Neutral response that doesn't validate their manipulation   Tune in — and let’s talk about taking your power back. Whether you’re a believer in manifesting your dreams or simply curious about how mindset shapes results, this episode breaks down practical ways to make the Law of Attraction work for you. The Law of Attraction is more than just thinking happy thoughts and hoping for the best. It’s about aligning your thoughts, emotions, and actions with the life you want to create. Too often, people focus on wishing for change without putting in the consistent mental and physical work to support it. Here, we talk about how to bridge the gap between desire and reality. We’ll start by discussing clarity — knowing exactly what you want. Vague goals bring vague results, so we share strategies for clearly defining your vision in a way that attracts opportunities and resources. Then we dive into visualization and belief — creating a mental picture of your success and truly believing it’s possible, even before it happens. You’ll learn why gratitude is a game changer in attracting more of what you want, and how shifting from a scarcity mindset to an abundance mindset can open unexpected doors. We’ll also talk about how your emotions act as a signal to the universe, and why maintaining a positive emotional state increases your chances of success. But this isn’t just about positive thinking — it’s about positive doing. The Law of Attraction requires inspired action. We’ll explore how to listen for opportunities, take bold steps toward your goals, and stay persistent even when challenges arise. We’ll also discuss the power of affirmations and how to use them effectively without falling into the trap of empty repetition. You’ll discover how to create affirmations that feel real and believable, reinforcing your goals instead of feeling like forced positivity. By the end of this episode, you’ll have a clear, step-by-step approach to using the Law of Attraction in a practical, results-driven way. Whether you’re aiming for financial freedom, better health, stronger relationships, or personal growth, these tools can help you align your inner world with your outer reality.   To effectively utilize the Law of Attraction, focus on aligning your thoughts, feelings, and actions with your desired outcomes. This involves practices like visualizing your goals, practicing gratitude, and replacing negative thoughts with positive affirmations. Cultivating a positive mindset, taking inspired action, and trusting the process are also crucial for manifesting your desires. Here are 10 ways to make the Law of Attraction work for you:           1. Identify Your Desires:     Be specific about what you want to attract into your life, whether it's a specific job, relationship, or material possession. Write down the details and visualize it as if it were already yours. 2. Visualize Your Goals: Imagine yourself having already achieved your desired outcome. Engage all your senses to make the visualization vivid and real. This helps reprogram your subconscious mind to believe in your desired reality. 3. Practice Gratitude: Regularly express gratitude for what you already have, both big and small. This shifts your focus to abundance and attracts more positive experiences into your life. 10 ways you can show gratitude.  1.  Write Thank-You Notes: Take the time to write personal, handwritten notes or messages to express appreciation for someone's kindness or support.    2.  Verbal Acknowledgment: Simply say “thank you” or offer compliments when someone does something kind for you, whether big or small.    3.  Acts of Kindness: Show gratitude through thoughtful actions, such as helping others or offering to return the favor when someone helps you.    4.  Practice Active Listening: Show appreciation by truly listening when someone speaks, demonstrating respect for their time and thoughts.    5.  Give Meaningful Gifts: A small, thoughtful gift can express your gratitude, especially when it aligns with the recipient’s interests or needs.     6. Celebrate Others' Achievements: Acknowledge and celebrate the successes and milestones of others, offering congratulations and recognition     7. Offer Encouragement: Show gratitude by providing support and encouragement to those around you, especially during challenging times.    8.  Show Up for People: Be present and offer your time to someone in need, whether it’s offering help, emotional support, or simply spending quality time together.       9. Share Positive Feedback: Compliment someone’s work, effort, or qualities and let them know how much you value their contributions.   10.   Practice Self-Gratitude: Reflect on and acknowledge the things you appreciate about yourself, such as your strengths, efforts, and growth. 4. Use Affirmations: Create positive statements about yourself and your desires, and repeat them regularly. Focus on positive and present tense wording to reinforce your belief in your desired outcome. 5. Replace Negative Thoughts: Identify and challenge negative thoughts and beliefs that may be hindering your progress. Replace them with positive and empowering thoughts. 6. Take Inspired Action: The Law of Attraction is not just about thinking positively, it also involves taking action. Follow your intuition and take steps that align with your desires. 7. Trust the Universe: Have faith that the universe is working in your favor and that your desires will manifest at the right time. Let go of the need to control the process and trust the journey. 8. Be Present: Stay grounded in the present moment, as dwelling on the past or worrying about the future can hinder your ability to manifest. 9. Surround Yourself with Positivity: Spend time with positive people who support your goals and maintain a positive outlook on life. 10. Let Go: Release any resistance or attachment to the outcome. Trust that the universe will deliver what you desire at the perfect time.   The Year of Profit podcast, hosted by Joe Shortridge, is your go-to resource for transforming every aspect of your life. In today’s episode, we’re digging into a double-pronged approach to saving money: rethinking daily spending habits and preparing your home for the cold months ahead. Let’s start with something you can do right now—changing your spending habits. Often, people focus only on earning more, but that’s only half the equation. The money you save is just as important. We talk about recognizing impulse buys and cutting them down. Before you click “buy” online or swipe your card at the store, take a moment. Ask yourself if you really need it. A 24-hour rule—waiting a day before making non-essential purchases—can slash unnecessary expenses dramatically. We also dive into the latte factor—those small, daily treats that add up over time. It’s not about never enjoying life but about being aware. If you’re buying coffee out daily, consider cutting back to a few days a week or brewing at home. This alone can save hundreds a year. The same goes for lunches, takeout, or convenience store stops. We also cover making better use of budgets. A lot of people think budgets are restrictive, but in fact, they give you freedom and control. When you know where your money goes, you can choose to redirect it to your priorities—whether that’s paying off debt, investing, or taking a vacation guilt-free. We talk about subscriptions and recurring charges—these are the silent killers of your budget. Streaming services, apps, memberships you forgot about. Go through your bank statements line by line and cancel what you’re not truly using. In the second half of the episode, we shift from your wallet to your home—specifically, preparing for winter. Why? Because heating costs can eat a huge chunk of your budget if your home isn’t sealed properly. The good news is that investing a little time and money upfront can lead to significant savings all winter long.   We talk about doing a home energy audit—even a DIY version. Check for drafts around doors and windows. Use weatherstripping and caulk to seal gaps. These are inexpensive fixes that stop cold air from leaking in and your heated air from leaking out. We also discuss adding or improving insulation in attics and basements. Heat rises—if your attic isn’t insulated well, you’re literally letting money float away. Even insulating outlets and light switches on exterior walls can help reduce drafts. Another topic we tackle is window treatments. Heavy curtains or thermal blinds can make a big difference at night, when temperatures drop. During sunny days, open them to let in warmth. It’s a simple, cost-effective strategy. We also touch on maintenance for your furnace. A well-maintained heating system runs more efficiently, saving you money on energy bills. Change filters regularly and consider a professional inspection before peak season. The upfront cost is often offset by savings over the winter. Finally, we look at smart thermostat use. Lowering your thermostat even a few degrees at night or when you're out can reduce costs significantly. Programmable and smart thermostats make this easy and automatic. In this episode, we emphasize that saving money isn’t about sacrifice—it’s about strategy. By being mindful of spending habits and preparing your home for winter, you’re setting yourself up for more financial breathing room. Every dollar you don’t waste is a dollar you can use to build a better future. Thank you for listening to The Year of Profit. In essence, if someone expects a person to succeed, that person is more likely to achieve success, and conversely, negative expectations can lead to poorer performance.  The original Rosenthal effect experiment, also known as the Pygmalion effect, was conducted by Robert Rosenthal and Lenore Jacobson in an elementary school setting. They manipulated teachers' expectations about their students' potential, leading to a self-fulfilling prophecy where students labeled as "intellectual bloomers" showed significant performance improvements compared to their peers.    So what exactly is the Pygmalion Effect? At its core, it’s the idea that what you expect—either of yourself or others—can dramatically shape performance and results. When we believe in someone’s potential, they often rise to meet those expectations. And when we expect little or hold limiting beliefs, performance often falls short. It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy. This concept comes from a famous psychological experiment. Back in the 1960s, psychologist Robert Rosenthal conducted a study in an elementary school. Teachers were told that certain randomly selected students were “intellectual bloomers” and would likely make great strides during the school year. These students weren’t special—just chosen at random. But by the end of the year, those students did perform significantly better. Why? Because their teachers believed they would. That belief changed how the teachers treated them—more encouragement, more attention, more patience. And the students responded to that. They internalized those expectations and performed accordingly.   Now let’s take this into your world. Let’s say you’re an entrepreneur, a content creator, or someone working toward a financial or personal goal. When you believe in your success—when you expect growth—you begin to make decisions aligned with that belief. You show up differently. You speak differently. You become more resilient. And that starts to create momentum. But here’s the catch: the opposite is also true. This is where the Golem Effect comes in—the darker side of the Pygmalion Effect. When you expect little of yourself, or others expect little of you, performance drops. You internalize those low expectations, and you start holding yourself back. You settle. You hesitate. You play small. All because you don’t expect more. This is why your mindset matters. It’s not just a feel-good idea—it’s a driver of results. Here’s the good news: You can change it. You can consciously raise your expectations. Think about how you talk to yourself. What’s your inner dialogue? Is it full of doubt? Fear? Hesitation? Or are you telling yourself: I can do this. I am built for success. I find solutions. I grow from challenges. How you see your future. Are you visualizing struggle and failure, or are you expecting things to get better, to grow, to thrive? When you start expecting more, you’ll start doing more. Because your subconscious will begin aligning your actions, habits, and focus with that higher vision. This also applies to leadership—whether you’re managing a team, raising kids, or coaching others. If you want to bring out the best in people, you have to believe in their potential. Speak it. Show it. Hold that higher vision for them until they can hold it for themselves. The best leaders, the best mentors, the best teachers—they set high expectations, and they make others feel like they can rise to meet them. Now, let’s talk profit—because this is the Year of Profit, after all. If you’re looking to grow financially, you need to expect profit. You need to believe that growth is coming. That abundance is within reach. That you’re capable of generating value, income, and opportunities. Your financial breakthrough starts with your mindset. I’m not just talking about blind optimism here. I’m talking about training your mind to focus on progress, to seek out solutions, to act with confidence—even before the results show up. Because when you expect progress, you find ways to make it happen. You take more chances. You recover faster. You invest smarter. And slowly but surely, your reality begins to match your expectation. How it works: The effect is a self-fulfilling prophecy where expectations, whether positive or negative, can become reality. A manager who believes their team is capable, for example, might offer more support, encouragement, and opportunities, ultimately leading to better performance. Conversely, a teacher who expects little from a student might unintentionally provide less attention or challenge, potentially hindering the student's progress.  Key aspects of the Pygmalion effect: The core of the effect is that expectations, whether conscious or unconscious, influence the way we interact with and treat others. The effect is considered a type of self-fulfilling prophecy because the initial expectations can create a cycle where the expected outcome is more likely to occur.  The Pygmalion effect can have both positive and negative consequences, depending on the nature of the expectations.  The effect can be observed in various settings, including classrooms, workplaces, and even personal relationships.  Examples: In a classic 1960s experiment by Robert Rosenthal and Lenore Jacobson at an elementary school, teachers were given false information about students' potential. Randomly selected students were labeled as "intellectual bloomers," and the teachers' subsequent interactions with these students, influenced by these expectations, led to significant academic gains for those students compared to their peers  A teacher who believes a student is gifted might provide extra attention and challenging assignments, leading to improved academic performance.    A manager who has high expectations for their team might foster a positive and supportive work environment, resulting in increased productivity.   Conversely, a student who is constantly told they are not good at a subject might internalize that belief and perform poorly, even if they have the potential to succeed.    Raise your standards. Raise your vision. Raise your voice. You don’t become what you wish for—you become what you expect. The Pygmalion Effect is real. It’s powerful. And if you use it—if you expect more from yourself, your business, your relationships—you’ll start to see everything rise to meet that belief.     3. How It Applies to Personal Growth & Business     When you expect yourself to grow, you naturally take actions aligned with that. Expect more out of yourself. Hold yourself to a better standard and tell yourself you can do what you’re working on. Show others that you hold yourself to a Highter standard.     When leaders or mentors believe in your potential, it boosts your performance. The more you tell yourself that you are better then what your thinking now the more your subconscious will notice.     Your subconscious takes cues from your conscious beliefs. By engaging in certain practices, like meditation, you can consciously influence this shift and create a more coherent brain state. the morning is a crucial time to intentionally guide your thoughts, feelings, and actions, as your brain is in a state where it is most open to new possibilities and reprogramming. It is very Important to have  a morning routine that includes practices like meditation and "mental rehearsal" to prime your brain and body for a new day and a new reality.   Segment 1: Napoleon Hill’s Philosophy on the Start of the Day.     Quote: “Your subconscious mind works while you sleep. When you wake up, your first thoughts dictate your day.”     Hill believed the morning is when your mind is most receptive to suggestion. It’s the prime time to program your thoughts.       This is the essence of the Definiteness of Purpose principle — use your mornings to reconnect with your burning desire and clear goal. Napolean Hill,  one of the greatest minds in personal development—Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich. Now Hill believed—and I agree—that the way you start your day sets the tone for everything else. It’s not just about routines or productivity hacks. It’s about power. It’s about purpose. Here’s something Hill said that always stuck with me:     “The dominating thoughts which we hold in our minds and feel with emotion will eventually reproduce themselves in outward, physical action.” Think about that. The moment you wake up, your mind is wide open—fresh from sleep, free from distractions. That’s the best time to plant powerful, intentional thoughts into your subconscious. Hill called this the power of auto-suggestion. When you begin your day repeating your goals, visualizing success, and speaking positive affirmations, you're literally shaping your future with your own words. You're setting your mental GPS. But here’s the problem: most people waste their mornings. They hit snooze. They scroll through social media. They check email. Right away, they’re reacting to life instead of creating it. Napoleon Hill warned against this. He said drifting through your day without purpose is one of the greatest dangers to success. So let me ask you: Are you drifting through your mornings? Or are you directing them? Hill teaches us about something called a “Definite Major Purpose.” That’s your big reason for doing what you do. And each morning, you should reconnect with that purpose. Your morning is your personal board meeting with your future. It’s your time to step into the mindset of the person you’re becoming—not the person you were yesterday. Let me walk you through what I call the Hill-Style Morning Routine—inspired by his teachings:     Wake up early—before the noise of the world kicks in. Give yourself at least 30 minutes of uninterrupted time.     Review your definite major purpose. Read it aloud. Own it. Feel it.     Affirm your beliefs. Say things like: “I am focused. I am disciplined. I am attracting the people and opportunities I need.”     Visualize your goals. See your dream as if it’s already real. Feel the emotions.     Plan your day. Write down the three most important things you must do today to move closer to your goal. When you do this, you’re not just having a better morning. You’re building momentum for your entire day—and for your future. Hill believed that success is not accidental. It’s the result of daily, intentional thoughts followed by consistent action. And it all starts when? In the morning. So let’s flip the switch. Instead of letting your mornings control you, take control of them. Begin tomorrow with purpose. Speak life into your goals. Set the emotional tone for your day. Because when you win your morning, you win your day. And when you win enough days in a row—your life changes. I'll leave you with one more quote from Napoleon Hill:     “What the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve. So get up. Conceive it. Believe it. And go achieve it—starting with how you start your day. Thanks for joining me on The Year of Profit. If this episode helped you, do me a favor—share it with someone who needs that morning motivation. And let me know how your mornings evolve after applying these principles.   Morning Rituals that Build Wealth & Confidence     Auto-suggestion: Recite affirmations and your major definite purpose. Hill recommended doing this first thing in the morning.     Visualization: See your success clearly. Imagine living the life you want as if it's already yours.     Gratitude: Hill promoted positive emotion as fuel for the subconscious. Morning gratitude sets a wealth-based mindset.     Planning: Successful people don’t drift. Hill taught that daily organized effort is key — and your morning is the moment to plan your “next best move.”   Why Most People Waste Their Mornings     Jumping into social media or email puts you in reactive mode.     Hill warned against starting your day with negativity, worry, or distraction — it muddies your mental clarity.     “Your dominating thoughts attract like-minded circumstances” — starting your day in chaos attracts more of it.   The Year of Profit podcast, hosted by Joe Shortridge, is your go-to resource for transforming every aspect of your life. It might sound silly at first, but the act of jumping engages your entire physiology — and that’s exactly the point. Emotional states aren’t just mental; they’re physical. When you’re stressed, overwhelmed, or stuck in negative thinking, your body reflects it. Your shoulders slump. Your breathing becomes shallow. Your energy drops. But the moment you jump, everything changes. Jumping forces your body to shift gears. It increases your heart rate, floods your system with oxygen, and activates endorphins. It jolts you out of mental fog and sends a powerful message to your brain: “We’re doing something different now.” This action breaks the loop of negative emotions and rewires your focus in real-time. That’s why motivational speakers, athletes, and high performers often jump, clap, or shout before a big moment — they’re using physiology to drive emotion. More than just physical movement, jumping is symbolic. It represents forward momentum, elevation, and the willingness to rise above the current situation. It tells your subconscious mind that you're ready to take action and shift into a more powerful, productive state. You don't need a gym or a fancy ritual. You just need to stand up and jump. Try it the next time you're feeling low. Jump. Yell something empowering. Move your body with intensity. You’ll be amazed at how quickly your mindset follows. Because the truth is: you don’t have to wait to feel better — you can generate the energy you need. And sometimes, all it takes is one jump to lift yourself into the version of you that’s ready to win the day. Tony Robbins teaches that your emotional state can be changed instantly by shifting your physiology, focus, and language. He emphasizes that emotion is created by motion — meaning, the way you move your body directly influences how you feel. Robbins often demonstrates how something as simple as standing tall, breathing deeply, or making a power move — like jumping or clapping — can immediately break a negative state and create a feeling of confidence or energy. He also stresses the power of focus: what you choose to focus on in any moment will determine how you feel. If you focus on what's wrong, you feel bad. Focus on what you can control and what's possible, and your state improves. For Robbins, mastering your state is a foundational key to personal power, success, and fulfillment.   5 ways to change 1. Change Your Inner Question Your brain is always answering questions, so take control of them. Instead of asking, “Why does this always happen to me?” try asking, “What can I learn from this?” or “How can I use this to grow stronger right now?” The question shifts your focus — and where focus goes, energy flows. 2. Gratitude Flash In under 60 seconds, list three things you’re grateful for, big or small. Feel each one deeply. Gratitude blocks negative emotions like fear and anger. It’s almost impossible to feel fear while truly feeling grateful. 3. Mental Rehearsal / Visualization Close your eyes and vividly imagine yourself succeeding — crushing a goal, owning a room, or having a powerful conversation. See it. Feel it. Hear it. Your brain doesn’t distinguish vividly imagined experiences from real ones, so this can instantly boost confidence and motivation. 4. “Pattern Break” Technique Catch yourself in a negative loop, then do something totally unexpected. Snap your fingers, make a funny face, say something silly out loud, or even laugh on purpose. This breaks the mental script and creates space for a better emotional choice. 5. State Anchoring Recall a moment when you felt unstoppable — totally alive, confident, joyful. Now, squeeze your fist or tap your chest while reliving it. Do this enough and you can anchor that feeling to the gesture. Later, when you need a boost, do the same motion and the emotion will come rushing back.       1. The "Smile Reset" This might sound too simple to work — but that’s exactly why it’s powerful. When you smile, even if you're faking it, your brain starts to release dopamine, serotonin, and endorphins — the same chemicals it releases when you’re genuinely happy. These chemicals help reduce stress, lower your heart rate, and improve your overall mood. Smiling also activates facial muscles that send signals to your brain that things are “safe” or “okay.” So, next time you’re feeling angry or down, look in the mirror and smile for 30 seconds. It may feel awkward at first, but stay with it. You'll feel your state begin to shift. 2. Breathe Like You’re Already Calm (4-7-8 Method) When you’re mad or anxious, your breathing becomes short and shallow, which tells your brain that you’re under threat. This keeps you locked in “fight-or-flight” mode. The 4-7-8 breathing technique interrupts that response by slowing down your nervous system and oxygenating your body. Here’s how: Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds Hold that breath for 7 seconds Slowly exhale through your mouth for 8 seconds Do this for just four rounds, and you’ll notice a sense of calm and control returning. It helps regulate your emotions and creates the space to respond, not react. 3. Put on "Your Power Song" Music bypasses logic and speaks straight to your emotional core. Think about it — one song can make you cry, dance, or feel like a champion. That’s why having a “power playlist” is so important. Choose songs that lift your spirit, energize you, or remind you of better times. When you feel down or mad, put on that one song that always lights a fire in you. Play it loud. Let it wash over you. If you’re feeling really brave, move your body to it — dance, jump, sway, nod — whatever helps you connect. The emotional shift can be dramatic. 4. Change Your Scenery Your physical environment affects your mental environment. If you’ve ever felt stuck or overwhelmed and suddenly felt relief after stepping outside, that’s no coincidence. Changing your surroundings, even slightly, can help disrupt your current emotional pattern. Go for a walk. Step outside and look at the sky or trees. Go into a different room with better lighting or more space. Movement plus a shift in visual input helps your brain reset. Nature works especially well — studies show that even looking at greenery can reduce stress and increase happiness. 5. Talk to a “State-Shifter” Friend We all have people in our lives who naturally lift our spirits — they listen without judgment, they say the right things, or they just make us laugh. These are your “state-shifter” friends. Don’t suffer in silence. When you're angry or emotionally low, reach out to them. Share what you’re going through. Sometimes, just talking it out is enough to break the pattern. Even better, ask them to remind you who you really are — not the version of you caught in the emotion. Connection heals, and the right people can shift your energy faster than anything.     6. Use the "5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique" This is a simple, science-backed way to pull yourself out of a downward spiral or emotional storm and get grounded in the present moment. Here’s how it works:       5: Name five things you can see.       4: Name four things you can touch.       3: Name three things you can hear.       2: Name two things you can smell.       1: Name one thing you can taste.     This technique forces your brain to shift focus away from emotion and back to the senses, creating calm and clarity. It’s especially helpful if you’re feeling anxious or overwhelmed and need to reconnect with the now.   7. Change Your Posture — Instantly Your body language isn’t just a reflection of your mood — it actively creates it. When you’re angry or down, you naturally slouch, fold your arms, or look down. But what happens when you stand tall, pull your shoulders back, open your chest, and lift your head? You feel more powerful and emotionally open. This instant posture change sends signals to your brain that you’re safe, confident, and in control. Bonus: take a deep breath while you do it. In just 10 seconds, you can literally stand your way into a better mood. 8. Do a 2-Minute "Win Review" When you’re frustrated or discouraged, your brain forgets your past wins and focuses only on what's wrong. Flip the script by taking two minutes to recall three times you succeeded, overcame something difficult, or felt proud of yourself. Write them down or speak them aloud. Reconnect with the feeling of confidence and momentum you had in those moments. This reminds your mind: You’ve done hard things before — and you can do it again.   The Year of Profit podcast, hosted by Joe Shortridge, is your go-to resource for transforming every aspect of your life. Joe discusses the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of wellness and how each plays a critical role in your post-retirement lifestyle. He shares practical strategies to stay active, eat smarter, manage stress, and maintain purpose—because living longer doesn’t mean much unless you’re also living well.   This episode covers:     The importance of establishing healthy habits before you retire     Simple fitness routines for any age and mobility level     Nutrition tips to fuel your body without restrictive dieting     Mental health practices to stay sharp and emotionally balanced     Why having a sense of purpose after retirement is key to longevity     How to create a sustainable wellness plan that evolves with you   Joe also shares personal insights and stories that remind us: wealth means nothing without health. And no matter your age, it’s never too late to take that first step toward better well-being.   Tune in and discover how small daily choices can lead to a healthier, happier, and more independent retirement life. So what can you start doing today? Here’s a few easy ideas:     Walking: 20–30 minutes a day. Pair it with a podcast — maybe this one 😉     Stretching: Especially in the morning. Loosen those joints and start your day with intention.     Light weights or resistance bands: Build muscle and protect your bones.     Water aerobics or swimming: Low impact, high reward.     Yoga or tai chi: Balance, flexibility, and mental clarity.   And most importantly — find something you enjoy. You’re more likely to stick with it if you love it. Prioritize daily exercise If you want to be healthy during retirement, one of the most important things you can do is to stay moving. Regular exercise not only enhances your mobility and overall well-being but also contributes to a longer, healthier life. Research indicates that retirees who are physically active can lower their risk of heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes, depression, various cancers, anxiety disorders, cognitive decline, and hip fractures. Whether you start your day with a brisk walk or join a senior fitness class, the CDC recommends that adults aged 65 and older get at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise each week. It’s also important to make time for strength training two times a week, as you can lose between 3% and 5% of your muscle mass per decade after the age of 30. If you want a versatile at-home workout option, a Michael Phelps Signature Swim Spa by Master Spas offers a perfect solution for low-impact, full-body workouts. The adjustable current allows for a variety of exercises, including gentle swimming, water walking, and resistance training. Swimming and water exercises are gentle on your joints while providing excellent cardiovascular benefits and muscle toning. In addition, the buoyancy of water reduces the stress on your joints while improving your mobility. Establish a routine For decades, your days followed a familiar pattern: wake up, grab a cup of coffee, get ready for work, head to the office, and return home. Retirement brings a newfound sense of freedom without a rigid daily schedule. However, many retirees find that keeping a flexible routine adds structure and purpose to their days. What does a retirement routine look like? It starts with trying to maintain a consistent sleep schedule, which can improve the quality of your sleep. You can also give your day a rough outline, which can help you stay productive and avoid feeling aimless. Scheduling regular times to use your Michael Phelps Swim Spa can not only help you create a daily routine that helps you stay happy and healthy in retirement. You can start your day with an exercise session or opt to spend your nights in the warm water. With built-in massage jets, you can use your swim spa to ease joint pain, muscle soreness, and any tension that you might be feeling. Hydrotherapy can be particularly beneficial for managing chronic conditions such as arthritis, fibromyalgia, and back pain. The soothing effects of warm water can improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and promote healing. Nurture your mental health Retirement marks a significant life transition. While it brings feelings of excitement and happiness, it can also trigger an emotional shock. Changes in social roles and networks can lead to what is often called the “retirement blues.” More than 25% of retirees say they feel depressed – a rate higher than that of the adult population overall. Sixteen percent of older adults sought treatment for depression, according to the National Council on Aging. While new retirees might experience feelings of isolation, sadness, and fatigue, it’s treatable. In addition to seeking help from medical professionals, retirees can nurture their mental health by making lifestyle changes and finding healthy ways to manage stress. Combat this by engaging in activities that stimulate your mind and boost your mood. The Michael Phelps Swim Spa isn’t just for physical exercise – it’s also a perfect spot for relaxation and meditation. The soothing sound of moving water and the warmth of hydrotherapy jets can help reduce stress and promote mental clarity. Stay socially connected Loneliness has been declared an epidemic and, by some accounts, it can affect about half of American adults. The CDC defines loneliness as “the feeling of being alone, regardless of the amount of social contact. Social isolation is a lack of social connections.” When you retire, it can be harder to maintain those social connections that were once built through daily interactions at work. This can lead to feelings of loneliness and isolation. However, there are ways to combat this. One way is to engage in community activities, such as joining clubs, attending social events, or participating in volunteer work. Staying connected with family and friends through regular meet-ups or virtual calls can also help maintain a sense of belonging. Additionally, finding new hobbies or interests can provide opportunities to meet new people and build new social networks. Stop comparing yourself to others. Whether checking out the "perfect" bodies on Instagram or comparing salaries with friends, we all compare ourselves to others at one time or another. But measuring yourself against other people erodes self-confidence fast. Research shows that the more envy people experience when they make comparisons, the worse they feel about themselves. Pay attention to when you start thinking other people are either above you or below you in some way. Instead of viewing them as your competitors, consider them opinion-holders. Someone who looks like they are doing well might have information, skills, or resources you could learn from. Make it your goal to become better than you were yesterday, not better than someone else.  Comparison is the Thief of Joy Start with this famous quote from Theodore Roosevelt. Comparing yourself to others often leads to unnecessary self-doubt. Instead of celebrating your progress, you diminish it by measuring it against someone else’s highlight reel.  Everyone's Journey is Unique No two people have the same background, talents, challenges, or timing. Remind your listeners that their timeline is not supposed to look like anyone else’s. Success is not linear, and growth happens at different paces.  Social Media Isn’t Real Life People usually post their best moments online. What you’re comparing your life to is a curated, filtered version of someone else’s. Behind every smiling selfie could be struggles you’ll never see. Encourage listeners to limit screen time if they notice it's harming their self-esteem.  Turn Comparison into Inspiration Rather than envying someone, ask: What can I learn from them? Use their success as a source of motivation, not discouragement. Shift the focus from envy to education.  Focus on Your Progress Have listeners look at where they were 6 months ago, 1 year ago, 5 years ago. Are they moving forward? If yes, celebrate that. Confidence grows when you acknowledge your own progress, no matter how small.  Gratitude Kills Comparison Encourage gratitude journaling. When people take time daily to list what they’re thankful for, they naturally begin to shift focus inward, recognizing the value in their own life rather than someone else’s.  You Don’t Know the Full Story You might be comparing your struggle to someone’s moment of success — not realizing they went through years of failure first. Or that they’re struggling in other ways. Appearances are deceiving. The Scarcity Mindset vs. Abundance Mindset Comparison often comes from thinking there’s not enough success, love, money, or happiness to go around. But confidence grows when you believe that there’s more than enough for everyone — that someone else’s success doesn’t take away from yours. Celebrate Others Without Diminishing Yourself lifting others up and recognizing their achievements can be empowering — not threatening. True confidence doesn’t fear someone else’s light; it shines alongside it.  Daily Affirmation Close this segment with an affirmation your audience can use: “I am on my own path. My worth is not defined by others. I trust my journey.” 2. Create boundaries. It’s impossible to be confident when you feel like you have no control over how others treat you. When you establish healthy boundaries, however, you’ll see that you’re in charge of determining what behaviors you’ll tolerate and which you won’t. Creating boundaries for ourselves can aid in feeling more in control and thus improve psychological safety. It's really part of feeling confident, knowing that you're in charge of your life. Say no to things you don’t want to do. Speak up when someone crosses the line. And make your expectations clear. Take care of your body. Feeling good about yourself is hard when you're not treating your body properly. When you prioritize self-care, you do something great for your body, mind, and spirit. Eating healthy, exercising, meditating, and getting plenty of sleep are all keys to helping you feel your best. Just adding in a few extra walks every week and making some healthier food choices could bolster your confidence. Eat foods that are closest to how they are naturally. Get away from processed foods. I mentioned fatty liver disease. Fatty liver disease, also known as hepatic steatosis, is a condition where excess fat accumulates in the liver. It can be caused by various factors, including alcohol consumption, obesity, and certain medical conditions. While often asymptomatic in its early stages, fatty liver disease can progress to more serious conditions like liver inflammation (steatohepatitis) and even liver failure if left untreated.  Types of Fatty Liver Disease:  Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD): This is the most common type, occurring in people who drink little to no alcohol. It's often linked to obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome.         Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (AFLD): This type is directly related to heavy alcohol consumption.   Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD): This is the new, more comprehensive term for NAFLD, emphasizing its link to metabolic dysfunction and related conditions.     Spend time with positive people. The people around you greatly impact how you feel about yourself. If judgmental or critical people surround you, it’ll take a toll on your mental strength. If, however, you’re interacting with people who can cheer others on and support one another, you’ll feel much better. Unfortunately, researchers have found that people with low self-esteem tend to befriend people who put them down. If you feel bad about yourself, you might spend time with others who put you down because you’re used to hearing bad things about yourself. If you feel awful about yourself, hearing others say nice things about you can be uncomfortable. So you might go with what feels familiar–put-downs and negativity. So pay close attention to the people you choose to surround yourself with and don’t be afraid to reduce or eliminate your contact with some people. Focus on creating healthier relationships with the positive people in your life. Although it may feel uncomfortable at first, it gets easier over time, and hearing good things about yourself might shift how you talk to yourself too. "You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with." This idea is widely attributed to motivational speaker and entrepreneur Jim Rohn, and it's rooted in both psychology and sociology. Here’s a breakdown of the core idea: 🧠 Psychological Influence: Social Contagion Theory: Emotions, habits, and behaviors are contagious. If your close circle is driven, kind, and positive, you're likely to adopt those traits. Mirror Neurons: Your brain mirrors the behaviors and attitudes of those around you, often subconsciously. 🌐 Social and Environmental Influence: Norms and Expectations: If your peer group values fitness, reading, or financial discipline, those behaviors become normalized and expected. Accountability & Support: Being around goal-oriented people raises your own standards and builds a support network. 📊 Research Examples: A famous Framingham Heart Study (over 30 years) showed things like obesity and smoking were highly influenced by social circles. Nicholas Christakis and James Fowler demonstrated in research that even a friend's friend (3 degrees out) can influence your habits. 🔄 Real-Life Applications: Entrepreneurs join mastermind groups or incubators to stay sharp. Addiction recovery relies heavily on community (like AA or support groups). Personal growth seekers often seek mentors, coaches, or supportive communities. Questions you might explore in a podcast or blog: Are your five closest people helping or hurting your goals? Can changing your environment actually change your identity? How do you consciously upgrade your circle? 1. Can changing your environment actually change your identity? Yes — your environment can absolutely shape and even transform your identity. Who and what you surround yourself with directly influences how you think, act, and see yourself. Your identity is not fixed; it's constantly shaped by: The conversations you have The standards you're held to The behaviors you normalize The goals that seem possible around you If you move into a space where success, growth, and discipline are the norm, you start to adapt. You begin to take on that mindset — not just to fit in, but because you're being shown a new version of what's possible for you. It's like planting a seed in fertile soil vs. dry sand. The right environment allows your potential to grow. 🔑 Change your environment, and you give your identity permission to evolve. 2. How do you consciously upgrade your circle? Upgrading your circle doesn’t mean ditching your old friends — it means intentionally surrounding yourself with people who inspire and challenge you. Here’s how to do it: ✅ Steps to Upgrade Your Circle: Audit your current circle. Ask: Do they support my growth or hold me back? Do they complain or take action? Get clear on your goals. Know what kind of energy, mindset, and habits you want to be around. Seek aligned communities. Join groups, masterminds, clubs, or events that attract driven people. Online forums, coaching groups, and industry meetups are gold. Be the person you want to attract. Growth-minded people are drawn to others on the same path. Build intentional connections. Reach out, network, offer value — and be patient. Strong circles grow over time. 5. Reframe your negative self-talk. When you talk down to yourself, you hold yourself back and decrease your confidence. Your subconscious buys into the idea that certain things a
