Tammy Plunkett’s first love is writing – she lives and breathes the words on the page. When she left her career as a registered nurse to stay home and raise her four children, she realized that there was only so much Sesame Street she could handle, so she decided to follow her passion and began writing. When her eleven year old child told her he identified as transgender, Tammy pivoted and started focusing on helping parents of transgender kids through mentoring, blogging, and writing articles such as her well-read one for Today’s Parent.Tammy’s story provides an incredible amount of insight with respect to understanding gender in general, as well as what it means to be transgender. She takes you through the real and raw emotion she felt when her son first revealed he was trans, the stages of grief she went through, and the reactions of family, the school system and her community through the whole process. In 1977, John Reilly became the youngest person ever appointed as an Alberta Provincial Court Judge. After twenty years on the bench, he began to notice a disproportionate number of indigenous accused appearing in his court and resolved to learn the reasons for this overrepresentation. Through his research he discovered information about residential schools, treaties, poverty and dispossession, and the intergenerational impact this had on indigenous peoples.Equipped with this knowledge and a corresponding shift in perspective, John began to apply a more progressive lens to his role in order to address the issues of bias and systemic racism so rampant within the justice system. He quickly realized that he was working within a broken system, and that the establishment was resistant to change. After thirty-three years on the bench, he became so disillusioned with the Canadian criminal justice system, he resigned his position more than ten years before retirement would have been mandatory.John is now a public speaker, writer, and advocate for transforming the justice system and creating better understanding between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples. In this episode:1. Growing up in small-town Saskatchewan in the 80s, Kiersten Mohr searched for ways to fit into the box society had ticked for her. After a life-time of accommodating stereotypes, internalizing societal beliefs, and indulging self defeating inner dialogue, she came to a tipping point and knew things could not go on the way they were. What Kiersten uncovered through her gender transition journey was that the decades of personal struggle were never about being transgender, but were about being human. With the state of the world as it is, we hear the word “resiliency” a lot lately. Having lost her husband, her business, her home, and her life savings, resiliency only scratches the surface of what has defined Ariana’s journey to reinvent herself. With the majority of the things she had considered important lost to her, she decided to go on an adventure. First to Ireland, then to walk the Camino de Santiago in Spain, and then to experience Bali. During her “Drink, Pray, Love” pilgrimage, she realized it was more than merely a physical journey she was walking. She was being called to shift her focus from a more conventional journey to one of leading pilgrimages, providing transformational coaching, and speaking to audiences eager to hear her message. When Tara finished her schooling in Sudbury, Ontario, she set her sights on working in corporate health and wellness, but quickly found that wellness in the corporate world was often an afterthought, and didn’t fit into the standard 9 to 5 routine. She decided to change direction and started to work at a local gym in her home town doing personal training, and sales and marketing. A short time later, the opportunity to move to the Northwest Territories arose. The moment she stepped into her new community she felt energized by the possibilities. Her soul was calling to her and she decided to listen. Colliding music, emotions, dance, and fitness she took a leap of faith, and decided to offer a new kind of class. Her jaw dropped to the floor as she noticed she had 50 people lined up down the hallway ready to get their groove on. Tara quickly realized using music to help people move their bodies, spark joy, release emotions, and start them on the road to healing was her calling. Her class is not just an exercise class, it’s an experience that involves the shedding of self and rebuilding layer by layer. Her story is one of finding your purpose and using the gifts that you have been given to start a movement. In this episode: 1. The origins of The b. Class (1:02). 2. Using music and movement to raise your vibration (6:12). 3. Letting your tears wash away what no longer serves you (9:58). 4. The gifts, the talents, the calling (12:49). 5. The business model – bigger than just me (14:33). 6. Moving online… would a global pandemic stop the movement? (16:57). 7. It’s not about the exercise (22:01). 8. Collaboration and bringing The b. Class to the world (25:24). 9. Letting life show you the way (29:09). 10. Coaching, branding, and building confidence (32:05). Early in adulthood, Nikki Tate witnessed her mother struggle with losing her sense of self and her identity, due to early onset dementia. At the time, assisted dying was not available as an option, but her mother’s experience piqued Nikki’s interest in the subject. Nikki’s greatest achievement has been living life on her own terms, so it is fitting that her book, Choosing to Live, Choosing to Die, gives insight into dying on those same terms. In this episode: The writing of Choosing to Live, Choosing to Die (Intro). There is no single answer for everyone (5:43). Having the hard conversations (12:50). When Robin was told she was lucky her lupus had been diagnosed so early, she felt blessed, but the news was also delivered with an unexpected twist. Her prognosis included a drastically reduced life-expectancy. She was in for the fight of her life. Her body was waging war against itself. But that internal warfare gave her an unexpected gift. A hyper-awareness of, and ability to advocate for, her own health. After years of learning to manage her disease, and beating the odds, she noticed something felt off with her body. When the medical system gave her a standard wait time for testing, she trusted her gut, and asked for the wheels to turn faster. What seemed like a mere complication due to lupus, ended up being an unrelated but serious condition, and early diagnosis likely saved her life. Although Robin doesn’t know what the future brings, one thing she knows for sure is, she will never be labelled with an expiry date.
