Christophe Briens, a veterinarian at CCPA, discusses coccidiosis and the way to better master the challenge using conventional or alternative solutions. Coccidiosis is a parasitic disease affecting all poultry species, causing significant economic loss. Prevention methods include good management practices, vaccines, feed additives, and monitoring programs. In Europe, rotation programs with coccidiostats feed additives are commonly used to prevent parasite resistance.

Georgie Croxford is Head of the technical team for feed ingredients at KW Feeds and Trident a division of AB Agri, UK. She is a strong advocate for the use of co-products in ruminant diets.Geogie explains why co-products  participate in a circular economy and indirectly to a more sustainable agri-economy. She talks how Covid-19 combined with Brexit hit all the industries in the UK especially on the co-products sector that is very dependant on raw materials availability and logistics. You also learn in this episode why Georgie  advocates for making agriculture more attractive for young people with an emphasis for women in agriculture.
The use of dietary fibers in pig nutrition is linked from the outset to the need to modify expensive cereal-soybean diets by valorizing by-products including fibrous raw materials. For this, it was necessary to better characterize the nature and composition of the fibers: from the measurement of crude cellulose to soluble and insoluble NSP (Non-Starch Polysaccharides). Many studies have been undertaken to determine their optimal conditions of use in pig formulas, as fibers are the primary factor in reducing the digestibility of net energy and can prove to be, when in excess, a diluent of nutrient intake and an antinutritional factor. But it is also and above all the essential nutrient improving the digestive process, the balance of the microbiota and the health of the piglet at weaning. The quality of fibers in many regions of the globe limits their use due to the risks of mold and contamination with mycotoxins. The use of toxin sensors and/or healthy sources of fiber is then strongly recommended.
The NEP score or Natur-add Environmental Performance Score enables any producer of specialty feed ingredients to measure for free the impact of its products on the environment. Just go to the public website of Natur-add , click on the “NEP score menu” and check the button to simulate the score. Then, just answer the proposed questions. The score is based on 20 questions shared in 2 parts:Half of the questions evaluate the impact at the production siteThe other half evaluate the impact of the specialty feed ingredient when used by animals on his environment. At the end of the questionnaire just enter your email and get a message in your mailbox that will enable you to discover your final score which is presented with a letter from A to E, A being the best result. This podcast explain how this score has been built and why it is a first tool any producer of Specialty feed ingredient will have to use to be aware of the minimum criteria to handle.
