02. Jimmy Toumpas: a journey to and from the AFL
Description
Today's episode welcomes the second guest to our alternative series of interview based episodes. That guest is none other than ex-AFL #4 National Draft pick, Woodville West Torrens premiership hero, and most importantly, great mate, Jimmy Toumpas. We were very honoured to have Jimmy not only give us his time, but to also be so candid and willing to explore some of his most vulnerable and challenging moments he experienced as a professional athlete. Jimmy breaks down his journey via his meteoric rise to national recognition, navigating the pressures of being a high draft pick, wrestling with the "athletic identity," and finding his own markers of success against a backdrop of constant expectation and scrutiny. Jimmy also talks us through his current role within the AFLPA and how he contributes to the well-being of current and ex AFL-listed players. We also ask Jimmy to settle the age-old debate between Carm and Al on the pod: Adelaide or Melbourne? Jimmy is as resilient and impressive as they come and we are so grateful for his openness and insight into the often neglected realm of mental health lived by professional athletes. Cheers Jim, we love you mate!
