Take control of the engagement.

No on-site work; it's bad for your credibility.
Have a good contract.
Sets boundaries
Sets expectations
Communicate your expectations.
Know your red flag issues.
Don't be too available.
Say no to bad projects to make room for the good projects.
Build up some financial cushion FIRST, then say "no" more freely.
