I think coordinated attacks happen when you run for office, at least as far as the media is concerned. Just because Trump wasn't a politician, doesn't mean he gets spared that treatment. However, the folks who tried to kill Trump were just deranged lunatics. Republicans call democrats Marxist pedophiles, and Democrats call Republicans Fascist bigots. The polarization has gotten worse, but I really don't think politics have changed that much, except the internet has made some aspects worse.
